Of course, I guess it makes sense to me cause I know Spike isn't there and that Angel is an ass. ; ) But my favorite thing about this chapter would have to be that Spike is not there yet. But by the end of this chapter I was ready to join Buffy in ripping all of their heads off. Still am. Giles and Angel acting the way they did, disappointed, bossy, and like they had any say whatsoever, while they are very actively betraying her majorly pisses me off. I kept waiting for Spike to somehow know that she needed him to come help her. Maybe patrol with her instead of Angel. No matter what their flaws or problems or stresses with each other, basically they are good noble people trying to do their best in a hard situation and foremost, they care about each other. But yeah, she's not too good at figuring out feelings so your characterization is spot on. OTOH, because you've been so explicit about Buffy's patrol patterns in chapter 28, you exposed their fundamental flaw. Buffy is entirely reactive. The scoobies do nothing to prevent fledglings from rising in the cemetaries. Like, for example, subverting all of the morticians and having them place slivers of wood in the hearts of any deceased. Unfortunately, the scoobies' unthinking passivity wrt evil is canon. It's just not very logical or realistic. That's a non-obvious lesson to learn; you can lose realism in a fanfic by following canon too closely. Though don't let any of that stop you. In most claiming stories, Spike (or even worse, Buffy) is suddenly a font of information about the whole thing. That's always frustrated me. Characters spontaneously having information, with little or no explanation given for why they have it. There would have to be a mystical or magical reason, and at least one of them should be trying to find out what's the cause, you know? They don't have to jump to "claim" right away, but something...that's where I've been at. Willow could even suggest it to Buffy, since Willow's natural jump would be to "spell!" The feelings are well done in both of them, though. No problem there. And all the craziness surrounding them...the friend reactions...all good. The thing is, Buffy and Spike live in a world where there can be a thousand and one answers for one problem. I have taken into consideration that Spike would have tried it on Dru, though he would have been too devastated if, oh say, Dru's visions forewarned her and knocked him down a few notches. Furthermore, Spike has absolutely no idea that he bit Buffy - as far as he knows, he's seen every inch of her, and honestly believes that her unwillingness to let him go down on her has everything to do with their first traumatic night together and nothing to do with a bite mark. Spike is coming around to believing it's a spell, as the pain grows worse. I think it's easier for us to see it because we know what happened, and it's obvious to us what's going on. Neither Buffy nor Spike think it's natural, but neither want to admit the possibility that the other stuff they're feeling isn't real - even Spike, who wants it to be real, yet curses himself for wanting it to be real. I'm so glad that you've put that much thought into this, though. In pretty much every claiming story I've read, someone makes with the exposition pretty much right away. Often, they seem to spontaneously know everything about claims. Now, when it's Spike with the knowledge, it makes some sense, but it's just as easy to believe he would be pretty much in the dark on the subject, and to my thinking, much more fun. This way you can explore the claim, rather than just reveal it. That's far more interesting to me. This chapter was great too. First, you showed that Spike isn't badly intentioned. Second, that Buffy doesn't know her own mind enough to make any kind of decisions for herself. That would be Buffy's fixation on her trainwreck of a relationship with Angelus. I only just had this insight; that Buffy couldn't kill Angelus because on some level she was trying to continue her relationship with him.
