Well, I'm very disappointed in Joyce's and Dawn's abilities. Either of them could have easily trumped Wolfie's manipulation and made themselves invulnerable to further attack.
Joyce could have pointed out that she has lots of faith in Spike since she believes the ritual is risky instead of suicidal. And of course Wulfie isn't alarmed since he doesn't care about Spike personally. He's not a lover like Buffy, nor a sibling like Dawn nor a friend like Joyce. He's not the one that would suffer if Spike dusts. There is no possible response to this because it cuts Wulfie out of the discussion.
Dawn could have started out the same but continued differently. She could have told Spike that if he was willing to leave her then she didn't want him in her life. And then left for home, telling Spike that if he made the right choice (to NOT risk his life) then he knew where to find her. Implicitly: fine do the damn ritual just don't call me if you do it. Again, there is no possible response, not even by Spike!
Belief in something is a continuous variable from 0 to 1 inclusive not a discrete variable either 0 or 1.
And then Buffy could have threatened with death anyone who helps Spike do the ritual regardless of outcome, counting it as attempted murder on her fiance. And I doubt Buffy would be happy with Giles' nervous response if she casually informed him that she would have killed him if Spike dusts so he must have a great deal of faith in Spike to put his own life in Spike's hands. |
Wolfie's manipulation worked because all three ladies DO have faith in Spike. If you have faith you don't require proof, if you need proof you don't have faith.
Winning a battle is not as important as understanding what you have lost. Ultimatium are only used by weak fools who can not find an intelligent way to gain their desires or they are intelligent enough to realise that what they gain by winning may not be as important to them as what they have lost. Thank god these ladies are smarter than that! |

| I love how protective the Summers' girls of Spike. Then not wanting him to do the ritual out of the slightest possibility that he might not survive it. The ritual was very beautiful. And of course you left us with the requisite evil cliff-hanger. Thanks for the great update. |

WHAT!!!!! did he lose his bleach job what happened? cannot end it there, want to know what's so bleedin' funny...and was it a good idea to do a cleansing ritual when he still has the old Spike inside him that might not completely have gone turncoat? Because even if olderfuture Spike might be worthy, surely the younger and still head over heals with Drusilla would still be a grey area?
Sly Slayer, using the power of three, mother, lover and daughter/sister to sway his decision but even more sly Wolfie (why the hell does that name sound familiar? is it the name of another auther or reviewer or something?) using reverse phychology on them. Catch 22, if you say no you are screwed and if you say yes you have to let him go through with it...very clever.
Poor Spikey, going au natural gel free and in White, bet he looking like a light bulb..hehee
