Chapter 10: Under Attack

It was after sunset when Faith and Buffy reached Spike’s crypt. Their walk had been relatively silent, with Faith trying to make small talk and Buffy not having much to say to her one-time enemy.

Buffy threw open the door with a bang, looking around for the vampire. Faith was asking her all sorts of questions about how vampires lived, but Buffy barely heard her as she looked around the crypt for Spike.

"Not much of a talker, is she?" Spike asked, materializing from a hole in the ground.

"Actually, no," Faith replied with a giggle.

Buffy sent Spike a glare. "More important things to do than talk," she told him, to which he raised his eyebrow pointedly. She couldn’t help but blush a little. "Demon on the loose." She explained what they had heard on the news, leaving him to ponder what sort of demon they were after.

Spike grabbed his duster, following the two slayers out the door. "So, why didn’t you get your soldier-boy to help on this little mission?" Spike teased, although he secretly wanted to know.

Buffy only glared at him, not bothering to respond.

"Where the hell are all the vamps tonight?" Faith complained. "I’m really starting to crave fighting now."

Spike smirked at her. "Gets you hot, does it?"

Buffy’s face flamed red while Faith didn’t even bother to look embarrassed. "Wouldn’t you like to know?"

"I do know, pet," he reminded them with a leer. "Vampire, here. Great sense of smell comes with the package."

Buffy cringed. "Ew, you’re a pig, Spike."

Spike rolled his eyes. "Oh, I forgot. I’m talking to the Virgin Mary herself."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Buffy snapped as she halted, bringing her hands to rest on her hips angrily.

"You. Acting all high and mighty. Don’t think anyone forgot that vampires get you hot."

The trio was now standing in the middle of Restfield Cemetery, Buffy and Spike arguing while Faith stood off to the side, watching them. Her head went back and forth from one blonde to the other as angry words were traded. The air was full of sexual tension between the two.

"One vampire got me hot," Buffy defended herself. "And he had a soul."

"Yeah, until you shagged it out of him!"

"We really don’t have time for this." Buffy started walking forward, away from the irritating vampire. "Either come, help, and be quiet or go back to your crypt."

Spike and Faith exchanged a glance, Faith looked amused at the display. Spike shrugged his shoulders and followed his Slayer with Faith right behind him.

"Are we ever going to talk about this?" Spike asked.

"Sh!" Buffy hissed back, looking over her shoulder at Faith. The three had decided to split up but stay close enough in case either of them needed help. "You’re supposed to be looking for a demon," she reminded him in a hushed tone. "And there’s nothing to talk about!"

Spike followed her example and lowered his voice to a whisper. "You kissed me, Buffy. I’d say we have quite a lot to talk about."

"I am trying really hard to erase that disgusting memory from my brain. You might try doing the same since it’ll never happen again." She didn’t even look at him while she said this, instead keeping her eyes peeled for demons.

A pained look crossed his face before he quickly disguised it with an irritated one. "Not like I want it to happen again, either!" he told her. "Just making sure you don’t try and jump my bones when we’re out patrolling together."

Buffy rolled her eyes. "That really won’t be an issue," she promised, not giving away the fact that she wished she could do that very thing without feeling guilt or shame. "Just be quiet and go look in your part of the cemetery."

Spike started to walk away before turning on his heel sharply, walking back to her. "If you’re so disgusted with yourself, why’d you do it in the first place?" he asked angrily.

Buffy sighed and looked down at her feet. This was the one question she didn’t have an answer for. Or maybe she did and was afraid to admit it to herself and anyone else for that matter. "I don’t know," she replied quietly, losing the sarcasm she’d been using earlier.

Spike could feel her attitude change and took a step closer to her.

"I’m confused," she admitted, still not making eye contact. "One minute I’m strapped to a hospital bed and Forrest is trying to kill me, and the next your saving my life."

"And now?" he asked, bravely reaching out to touch her arm.

She looked up at him, finally making eye contact before she spoke. "And now-"

The moment was broken when they heard tires screech. They both looked up quickly and found that a small truck had stopped short on the other side of the cemetery. Three men jumped out, all clad in black, and started for Faith, who had been in that area.

"Faith!" Buffy yelled, breaking into a run to help the other Slayer.

Spike was right behind her, and they got to the brunette just as the shortest man was injecting her with a needle. She’d been fighting off the other two and apparently hadn’t seen the other until it was too late. Feeling the effects of the large dosage immediately, she began to wobble on her feet.

The three men tried to carry her towards the truck, but Buffy and Spike attacked them first, sending Faith rolling onto the lawn. As soon as Spike struck out and hit one of them, an intense searing pain shot through his brain. "They’re human!" he yelled at Buffy, disappointed that he’d be no help to her in the fight.

Buffy quickly took on all three of the men, noticing quickly that their fighting skills were highly inadequate. Just as she was getting the better of all three, they retreated back to the truck they’d emerged from. Buffy ran after them, but just as she got within touching distance, the vehicle sped off, leaving her in its wake.

Disappointed that she’d let them get away so easily, she headed back to check on Faith. Spike already had the wounded Slayer in his arms, ready to take her to Giles. Buffy couldn’t help the jealous feelings that emerged from inside her at the sight. She squashed them for the moment, deciding it was more important to get Faith help than to take something Faith had no control of out on her.
