The series redemption curve for Spike

by Tammy

Spike's words from Afterlife:

I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course. But after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again, do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways ... Every night I save you.

Every night he saves her.

He's no longer the naive dreamer whose unabashed actions led so easily to utter embarrassment and devastation.
He's no longer the caveman who knocked a girl out and dragged her away to keep her from the competition.
He's no longer the drunken, suicidal prat who wallows because he's been left or lost hope.
He's no longer the cad who treated a girl with utterly vile, self-motivated disregard and contempt which nearly led to murder.
He's no longer the slightly creepy, stalking obsessive who objectified a girl.

Rather, in each one of the 147+ days she's been back, he's saved this girl just a little bit.

With the unassuming companionship she's desperately needed.
With the perseverance that tells her she's important enough.
With the truth-riddled words she needs to hear when she most doesn't want to hear them.
With the actions he is forced to enact when she's cut off all other causeways.
With the freely provided emotions bent on awakening her own.

He's become the guy who loves the girl enough to let her go, yet stays despite the pain, to make sure she's okay.

Not the path to a dead end. Think positive!
