James Pickens Jr., è conosciuto nel mondo dello spettacolo per alcuni ruoli ricorrenti in numerose serie tv tra cui The X-Files, NYPD Blue, Philly, The Practice e Six Feet Under.

Nato a Cleveland, Ohio, Pickens ha iniziato la sua carriera nei teatri di New York. Nel 1990 Pickens si è trasferito nella West Coast e il primo ruolo importante in tv è stata un'apparizione in Roseanne, in cui è apparso diverse volte. Successivamente ha avuto un ruolo ricorrente anche in Beverly Hills, 90210. Sono seguite dozzine di altre apparizioni in tv e una delle più importanti è stata quella nel film A Slight Case of Murder.
Sul grande schermo, Pickens è stato diretto da Steven Soderbergh in Traffic, da Oliver Stone in Nixon e Warren Beatty in Bulworth.
Nel tempo libero Pickens ama andare a cavallo. Pickens è sposato con Gina, vive a San Fernando Valley ed ha un figlio e una figlia.
