Prologue
Hemery High School
L.A. 1996
She was absolutely perfect. To the man in the car, Buffy Summers was the closest to Heaven that he would ever witness, for he was surely going to Hell. Demons didn't go to Heaven, no matter how much good they do, or in his case, how much they wanted to do.
His name was Angel. He was destined to help Buffy Summers. She was the Slayer. One of the very few on this Earth that even had a hope in defeating him...well, when he was in shape. But Angel was in terrible shape. For decades, he had been living off of scraps, not very smart, but he didn't want to revert to his old ways. That meant killing people and Angel didn't do that anymore. He had been cursed with a soul around the turn of the century and that meant that he wasn't a bad guy anymore.
Whistler wanted him to help that young, innocent girl sitting on the steps at the front of the school, wanted him to help her survive. She would one day be the world's greatest Slayer if she survived long enough to get to Sunnydale...
One minute she was sitting on the steps sucking on a lollipop, the next, she was the Slayer. He vowed then and there that for as long as he was on this earth, he would protect her.

Part One
That Night, the Graveyard
Once again he watched her. He chuckled softly at the look on Merrick's face when she asked if he had any gum. She was different, this girl. She would survive longer than the others, even if it was only to prove a point...
He would give it a couple of days, then he would go to her, use the kind of persona that Whistler had told him to use. He'd get her to trust him and then explain himself. It wouldn't be easy, but he would do it, he had to. He didn't want her to end up dead like all of the others before her, not because she was responsible for saving the world, not because she could be his redemption, but because he loved her. He wonder if Buffy Summers could ever love him, wondered if the Slayer would ever love...a vampire.

Two Days Later
Hemery High
Angel stood outside of the girl's locker room and listened. She was in there with Merrick. God, he hoped that she'd understand how important it was for her to train. Lothos was coming and he would kill her if she wasn't ready...
He nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw what Merrick did! He threw a dagger at her head! Angel was relieved when she caught it, but he was still shaking. How could Merrick have done that? He knew how important Buffy was to life itself, Angel shuddered when he thought of what would have happened if she hadn't caught that dagger...
He turned and walked away as he thought of what was to come...

Part Two
A Couple Of Nights Later
Angel admired her form. She had learnt so much in only a few days. Buffy had changed since that first night, now she actively took part in the fight and didn't just try to avoid it.
Lothos was there. He could tell by the change in the air. He looked toward where Buffy had stopped fighting, where she was standing, watching as Lothos' right-hand-vamp taunted her. Then He appeared. Lothos.
He was scared for her. Angel didn't want her die! He watched as Merrick approached from the side and stopped Lothos. He watched as Lothos staked Merrick because he knew that he would never get there in time to stop it.
Lothos left, taking the other vampires with him. Angel almost cried when he witnessed Buffy's despair at Merrick's death. He only hoped that Merrick had had enough time to tell her that she would have help...in the form of, him.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
He followed her home. He hurried so that he could speak with her before she made a mistake, because without Merrick there to guide her and with Merrick's death, she would be a mess. He caught up with her just before she reached her home.
Then she doubled over with pain...
She turned around and realized what had caused it. There was a vampire standing right behind her. She pulled out the stake she had hidden underneath her jacket and thrust it into the heart of the trusting vampire with a vengeance. They may have killed her Watcher, but they wouldn't get her!
And with that, the one being that would love her the most, love her unconditionally, above all else, burst into ashes.
The only thing that ran through Angel's mind when he realized what had happened, was...
*Stay safe, Buffy, survive...*
...and somehow, she heard him...
