Disclaimers: None of these characters are mine, la de dah, don't sue... And anything else I should mention up here, pretend I mentioned it. `Cause I really don't know what I'm supposed to say. So there.
Spoilers: Up to Something Blue and IWRY, and my stories, "Christmas Day" and "Together Again" and "Helplessly Yours." You don't have to have read "Helplessly" but I like it, so you should.
Summary: I'm back to my normal make their lives miserable thing. Angel knows everything that happened, Buffy knows everything that happened. But that doesn't mean all the problems have gone away yet… Oh yeah, and Oz is back. I don't know if I made that part clear in "Helplessly".
Distribution: If you have any of my stories in this series, take it. If not, ask me. I'll probably say yes. And I like keeping a list of where my stories are so I can send more later.
Feedback: Always! How else am I supposed to know if I should keep writing or not? goredwings@usa.net
Rating: Did I mention I hate figuring this out? Especially since I think I rate them stronger than I should. But I never know. So, this one's… a strong PG-14? With lots of bad language.

Angel silently rubbed her back, offering silent comfort. Her shoulders shook for a moment. He handed her a washcloth. She took it, then grabbed the glass of water on the bathroom counter and rinsed her mouth out.

"Back to bed," he ordered quietly as she looked at him, exhausted. She just nodded a little, and he helped her back to the bed. She'd been sick all night, and Angel was a little worried about her. He'd made her call the doctor's office, and Willow was picking her up in a few minutes to take her. It was seven o'clock now.

"I hate being sick," she muttered, her eyes closed and her hand over her eyes.

Angel carefully sat next to her on the bed, trying not to shake the mattress too much. He gently set his hand on her forehead, checking for a fever. He didn't find one, and he frowned.

"Aren't you gonna be late?" she questioned groggily.

Angel frowned. He had to be in LA by nine. "You're more important than that." He informed her.

She frowned at him. "Angel, Willow's gonna be here in just a bit. You get going before Cordelia gets cranky. I'm sure it's nothing, and the doctor will tell me to stay in bed and drink lots of fluids. And you have to meet this client or whatever."

"If you're sick though-"

"I've been sick before," she interrupted. "Go. I'll call you on your cell phone as soon as I find out what's up."

Angel sighed. "As soon as you're done at the doctor's then." She nodded a little. He gently kissed her cheek.

"I love you, be good."

"You too," she said softly.

He hesitated in the doorway, looking back at her. He had the oddest feeling that something was going to happen…

*

As the doctor returned to the room Buffy was in, the Slayer shifted to look at her. She was starting to feel better all ready.

Unfortunately, Willow was making her stay until the doctor was completely finished. "What's the sitch?" she questioned immediately. Doctor's offices were too much like hospitals. And hospitals were just plain scary.

The doctor glanced at the chart in her hands. "We're running a few tests right now, but we won't know the results until tomorrow. I would suggest you go home, take it easy, drink plenty of fluids, and then we'll call you in the morning."

Buffy rolled her eyes. She'd told Angel that's what the doctor would say, hadn't she?

*

Angel hung up the phone, then looked to Cordelia. She was a little pissed. He'd just interrupted their meeting so he could talk to Buffy for a half an hour.

"Okay. You were saying something about the demons in the park?" Cordelia sighed. "And I would have had it finished an hour ago if you didn't have to talk to your precious Buffy every fifteen seconds."

Angel just looked at her.

Doyle rolled his eyes.

Cordy sighed. "Why do I bother? Anyway, they attacked some lady…"

*

Buffy yawned as she fumbled for the phone. It took a moment, but then she remembered she was at the mansion, and the phone was on the other side of the bed. She finally found it and turned it on, not bothering to open her eyes. "Hello?" she mumbled sleepily.

"Hello, this is Dr. Makin's office calling. May I please speak to Buffy Summers?"

"Speaking." Buffy told the woman, yawning again.

"Hi, this is Patty Makin. I have the results from your tests."

"Oh, hi. What's up with me then?"

"Well, I know you said it wasn't likely, but I went ahead and got a pregnancy test done. It turned out positive."

Buffy bolted upright in the bed. "What?"

"You're expecting a child. According to the tests, I can tell you when it was conceived, if you'd like,"

"Yes. Please." Buffy clutched the blankets around her.

"You conceived around Christmas day. It's too early for me to be more exact."

Buffy nodded a little, numb. "Yeah. Bye."

"Congratulations," Patty said.

Buffy hung up.

Pregnant?

*

"Pregnant?"

"Yeah."

"Wow."

Buffy glanced at Willow, then lowered her head again, resting it against the comforter. "I'm nineteen, Will," she said softly. "I'm not ready for this."

Willow moved over to the side of the bed, and sat next to

Buffy. "Have you told Angel?"

Buffy sighed. "He's still in LA. And this isn't the kind of thing you say over the phone." Especially when it isn't- can't be-his.

*

A week passed by before Angel was able to return to Sunnydale. Buffy knew he was coming home, and was over at the mansion waiting for him. Unfortunately, the gang decided to come visit her.

The second Buffy heard Angel's car pull up, she was out the door and headed over to greet him. He smiled when he saw her, and set his bag on the trunk of his car. She flew into his arms, and closed her eyes, afraid to not savor the moment with him. Considering she probably wouldn't have him for much longer.

Angel closed his eyes for a moment as he let himself hold her. God he'd missed her. He gently kissed her forehead, and his arms pulled her to him. It was then that he noticed.

Two heartbeats. He froze for a long moment, and listened again. Sure enough, there it was again.

"The gang's all here," Buffy told him, pulling away from him. She didn't notice his odd expression. She was too busy trying not to give away her little secret yet. "I wanted to be here to surprise you, and they followed me over."

Angel managed to nod a little, and they made their way back in, not holding hands or anything like normal. Buffy was too afraid to, and Angel was still recovering from his shock.

*

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on who was talking, the gang left quickly, after finding out that Cordelia and Doyle would be there in the morning.

And Buffy and Angel were alone once more.

Buffy didn't hesitate. She didn't look at him either. She sat on the couch, staring straight ahead. He stood behind her, looking at her but not knowing what to say. She took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant."

"I know." He said quietly. "I can feel the heartbeat."

She looked at him, paler than he was. "I'm sorry." She said dully. She made a small sound, and he couldn't tell if it was a sob or a laugh. "I always say that to you I guess, but…" She shrugged and faced the fireplace again.

He was by her in an instant, and sat down on the couch next to her. Tears were already forming in her eyes. "I went to the doctors, and she said it was conceived around Christmas." She looked at him, true tears falling now. "And I know it can't be yours…" she added in a whisper. "I'm so sorry, Angel," she said, near hysterically.

He stayed silent, but slid closer to her, pulling her to him so she could cry against him. "Shh," he murmured. "I know." He closed his eyes even as he tried to comfort her. He wanted to be sick, but he couldn't even do that. "Buffy," he said soothingly as she cried, her shoulders shaking even as she buried her head against his chest.

"I'm so sorry, Angel," she whispered. "I keep screwing everything up with us, and now…"

"Shh… It'll be okay," he whispered soothingly. "Shh…"

They stayed like that, Buffy crying in his arms, for a long time. When Buffy finally fell asleep, Angel carried her out into the bedroom, then returned to the other room.

To brood. For the rest of his eternity, if it was possible.

*

Angel had just finished his breakfast when the gang showed up on the front porch, half an hour after he'd called them. Spike was asleep on the couch, having arrived moments before sunrise, drunk. Angel stepped past him, and avoiding the shadows, he managed to let them in. He didn't waste time. As soon as they were all seated, he told them. "Buffy's pregnant."

Silence greeted that. Amazement and wonder was on everyone's faces. Xander finally got his mouth to work again. "Wow. I mean, congratulations. Or not." He said slowly after Angel flinched.

"It's not mine." Angel said quietly.

Willow frowned. Angel knew she'd already known about the situation, so he looked to her. "I thought you guys were… um, sleeping together before Christmas. And that… you know, it could be… yours I mean." Flushed bright red, Willow let Oz grab her hand and kiss her cheek.

Angel shook his head a little, looking over to the fireplace. "I can't have children. No vampire can."

"Oh," Willow said, very softly.

Giles closed his eyes for a moment. "Riley then?"

"Yes."

Xander stood up, going over to the wall and leaning on it. He couldn't sit still now. "What is she… Um, is she keeping the baby?"

"I don't know." Angel answered quietly. "It's her choice, and she hasn't said one way or the other."

They fell silent once more. No one had the courage to ask what they really wanted to know though.

What was Angel going to do?

*

Peggy Makin was working late at her offices, at least for a Saturday. Normally, she left at two, but today she had too much to do for her to leave any time soon. She sighed as she flipped through Buffy Summers's folder. The girl hadn't sounded too excited on the phone. Peggy knew that meant that she'd probably had problems with her boyfriend, and this was completely unplanned.

The phone rang. Peggy sighed and stood up, going over to the phone behind her.

It was a wrong number, and soon Peggy turned back to work on Buffy's file.

But it was gone.

She frowned and shuffled the papers around. "What the hell…?"

She searched the room for another half an hour.

She never found it.

*

It was three o'clock when the phone rang, waking Angel. The vampire sighed and silently cursed whoever it was (unless it was Buffy) that dared disturb him while he slept. But he answered it. "Hello?" he said, sitting up in bed. He grabbed the pad of paper off of his dresser. He wasn't too good at remembering messages right away when he woke up.

"Angel?" a male voice said.

Angel frowned a little. He recognized the voice but couldn't place it…"Yeah. Who is it?"

"Tell your lover that she'd better watch her back. We know."And then they hung up. Angel scowled. He hung up the phone, then picked it up and dialed that *69 number he'd seen advertised all over the place.

"We're sorry. The number is not listed." Angel didn't bother to listen to the rest. He hung up the phone again.

We know. Angel frowned. Who the hell is we? And what do they know about?

The second question he could guess at. Buffy's pregnancy. He closed his eyes. He didn't even want to think about it. She'd gone to the dorm with Willow at lunchtime, and he was going to see her at sunset.

But how would they know?

And who the hell was they?

*

That night, Angel went over to the dorm room, where Willow and Buffy were. The Slayer was laying on the bed, staring at the wall. Willow, after making sure they didn't need anything, left to go find Oz.

Buffy rolled on her back, not meeting his gaze. "I can't get an abortion." She said quietly.

He looked at her. That hadn't been anything near what he'd been expecting. Not that he'd thought she would get one, but normally, even with her, there were pleasantries first.

She waited for him to comment, but he didn't. "I thought about this all day. I could never get one I don't think. I'm around too much death as it is."

He nodded a little. "It's your choice to make. Are you telling him?"

She flinched. She still didn't look at him. "I don't know." She began twisting one of her rings around her finger. "I haven't really thought about it."

Angel looked up at the wall. "It's his child. He should probably know." He wanted to be the one to be told that. It was a startling thing to realize. But it couldn't happen. "Except for the fact that he tried to kill you."

Buffy sat up, leaning against the pillows behind her. She studied her hands. She didn't want to tell Riley. She didn't love Riley; she didn't even really care about him anymore. She didn't want to hurt Angel, and she didn't want to have to hear him say those words that he'd just said. She didn't want to think about how much he was hurting… because of her.

A one-night stand produced something that true love never could.

There was irony, in some twisted way.

"What are you going to do?" she asked in a whisper. She didn't want to hear his answer. She knew that he could never want to stay with her. Not after this.

He was quiet for a long time after. With each passing second, Buffy felt any chance of him staying going away. And she knew that even if he did chose to stay, it would be because of her. He finally spoke, having a hard time saying the words. "The baby. No matter who the father is. It's coming from you." He finally looked at her, and found her watching him. "I'm staying. I couldn't leave you, Buffy. No matter what happens." He squeezed her hand, and laid next to her on the bed. She slid over a little bit to make room. "It hurts," he admitted. "Before I was able to think that maybe it was just something you made up or exaggerated, or whatever. And now I know it has to be true, and…"

She laughed harshly. "And now you know it's true. And you're just going to stay because you feel bad for me."

He scowled at her. "Buffy, believe me. Even my kindness towards you has it's limits. If I didn't love you so damn much…" He looked away from her. "God, I don't think I could stand this." He looked at her again, gently forcing her to look at him. "And baby, please, don't think that I'm staying because I feel sorry for you. I love you, Buffy. That's why I'm staying." He looked away once more. He didn't say what he felt. He couldn't say it. He felt such rage towards Finn that it was almost unbearable. He felt such anger at himself for their separation that had caused that night to take place. And he just felt so horrible… He could never tell her that he felt angry with her still… god she was so depressed as it was. He could never tell her that he felt angry that she'd reacted the way she had, that he blamed her a little for this.

She blamed herself enough already, he thought bitterly as she curled up next to him.

He closed his eyes. He didn't know how he was supposed to handle this.

He just didn't know what to do.

*

The next day was much of the same. Buffy and Angel's relationship was tense once more. So tense that it was almost unbearable for each of them.

Angel spent the day at the mansion, and Buffy at her dorm and going over to her mother's to tell her the news. She didn't handle it well.

But at sunset, Buffy and Willow began the long walk towards the mansion. Oz was meeting Willow there at six, a little after they'd get there, and after they dropped Spike off –he'd decided to stay at the mansion with his sire- they were going on a date.

The two walked in silence, all of the problems weighing down on them. Buffy had gone to see the doctor again, just to double check. Her normal doctor hadn't been in, something about filing a police report, and Buffy had seen some other guy. It hadn't thrilled her in the least when he'd confirmed her pregnancy.

The Slayer sighed as she and Willow walked past the cemetery that was closest to Angel's. "He hates me." Buffy said softly. Willow looked at her, prepared to argue, but Buffy cut her off. "He'd never say it, but he does. He blames me for this, and I'm afraid it's hurting him more than anything else I've ever done to him." She chuckled humorlessly, and Willow looked down. "And I've done a lot."

"Buffy," Willow said quietly, a little tired. She'd been sitting up with Oz all night, then with Buffy all day. It was wearing her out. "I think you need to talk to him."

"I know." Buffy said softly. "But I haven't' been exactly comfortable talking with him, or even seeing him, since I found out. I mean, I know he isn't thrilled either. Would you? Would Oz be able to look at you if you were pregnant with someone else's baby?"

"Especially when it's Riley's." Willow added softly.

"Especially when it's Riley's," Buffy agreed, sighing.

"So, what are you going to do with the baby?"

"I don't know. I mean, I've thought about it and all, but…"

*

Riley had been following them for a while. He nearly crapped his commando pants when he heard Buffy saying that she was pregnant … with his child. Confirming the information he'd found in the file he'd taken from her doctor's. Forrest and Graham, who were next to him, were equally shocked. They exchanged looks. Riley swallowed angrily. "We get her, take her back to base." Riley ordered. Actually, they already knew this. Walsh had ordered them already.

But this news just gave them further motivation.

"One."

"Two."

"Three."

And they jumped out and attacked the two from behind.

Buffy grunted as she was tackled, and immediately began struggling. She had already recognized that they were commandoes, and she assumed that one of them was Riley. But she didn't really have the time to figure out which one it was. She was too busy trying to get free of their hold on her.

One of them, she was ashamed to admit, had managed to pin her down, and she couldn't get free. Another one had Willow pinned down, and the other was joining the one that had Buffy. Forrest, Buffy realized with a grimace. "Let go of me. Now!" she ordered, bucking against him. She managed to throw him off of her, and finally figured out that he was Riley. She kicked Graham off of Willow, and the red head got up. "Go get help!" Buffy ordered immediately, kicking Graham back so he couldn't go after her friend.

Riley recovered from when she'd thrown him off her and dove at her again. He was enraged, and tackled her down again. "You stupid bitch! My child and you're fucking a vampire! I'm gonna fucking kill him in front of you!"

Buffy struggled with him, but was amazed and horrified to find that he had gotten much stronger since last time. She rolled over, forcing him on the bottom. His two friends grabbed her arms and yanked her off him. Riley jumped up and punched her. Buffy hissed with pain, but managed to break free of Graham's hold on her, and she threw the commando back against a tree. He didn't get up. Riley pulled the knife out of his belt. "You stupid bitch!" he screamed.

Buffy shoved Forrest back just as Riley dove at her again. She managed to punch him in the face and he grabbed her arm. She grabbed his arm, the one with the knife in it.

Forrest stumbled to his feet and helped Riley free his arm. He didn't see his friend's knife.

Riley punched Buffy with his free hand, then jammed the knife into her stomach.

Her eyes went wide, and for the longest moment, they just stared at each other, Buffy still underneath him. Slowly, almost anticlimactically, her eyes rolled back and she relaxed completely, unconscious.

Riley stared at her for a long moment. Slowly, he got off of her, backing away slowly. He dropped the knife and stared at his blood- covered hand. Forrest stared at Buffy for a moment, then at Riley. Then he ripped off his mask and went over to the Slayer, pulling a small first aid kit out of a compartment in his belt. He checked for Buffy's pulse, then when he found one, checked for her to be breathing.

Riley could only stare as Forrest applied pressure to the wound. Sounds of a car coming to a stop in the distance were heard, and it jolted Riley into action. A cold expression crossed his face, and he fumbled for his radio. "Send backup to Jameson Cemetery. Be prepared to take one injured soldier, two vampires, one Slayer, and possibly more."

Forrest stared at him, shocked. Riley had just stabbed this girl, possibly killed her and his own baby, and now he wanted to capture the girl's boyfriend and friends? "Are you crazy?" he whispered.

Footsteps were heard running towards the area. Riley glared at Forrest, ordering him to silence, then stepped back into the wooded area that surrounded the cemetery.

Angel showed up first. He snarled at Forrest, who jumped back, and then the vampire went to Buffy's side, cradling her in his arms as best as he could. He checked the wound and found it to be still bleeding.

Spike joined him and snarled at Forrest as well. He looked to Buffy, frowning, and knelt by her side.

Willow and Oz arrived almost immediately after. "Oh god, is she-" Willow couldn't bring herself to say the word.

"No." Angel answered, glaring at Forrest. "Where is he?" he hissed.

Forrest shook his head, raising his hands in innocence. "He took off."

Graham groaned a little. Forrest glanced at him, then back to the vampire who was so concerned about Buffy. Willow had joined him, and Oz had already returned to the van to pull it up there, so they could drive Buffy to the hospital faster.

Silently, Angel began to lift Buffy up. "Come on." He said tersely, looking to Willow and Spike. "Get her to the hospital. I'll be there soon."

"I'll stay." Spike said, seeing Willow about to protest. Oz's van pulled up quickly. Angel waited for Willow to open the side door, then gently lowered his beloved onto the pile of blankets that Willow had quickly gathered. Willow sat in back with her friend. "Be careful," she whispered as Angel closed the door. She knew what the two vampires were going to do to Riley if they found him. It worried her. Not because she cared about Riley. She just knew he had a lot of friends.

*

The second the van was out of sight, Riley stepped into the clearing. Angel vamped out immediately.

"I hope your life insurance policy's paid up," Spike said, smirking. He looked at the other two, Graham who'd just been informed of what had happened.

"I don't think it'll matter," Riley said, even as he and Angel glared at each other.

The sound of cars pulling up could be heard. Riley smirked. "I've got lots of friends."

Angel snarled at him. "You won't always be around them." He warned. Angel looked to Spike, considering his options. He reluctantly realized he didn't have any choice. For the moment, Riley had a huge advantage.

He growled once at Riley, then he and Spike hurried off to get away before backup arrived.

*

Willow sat at the hospital, lost in worry for Buffy and Angel. She wished Buffy would come out of the ER all better now, and Angel would show up to take her home and the baby would be Angel's, and it would all be over with…

Then Angel walked in, and Willow closed her eyes for a moment, relieved. Willow stood up, going over to the vampire who's face showed his concern. "The doctor's haven't come out yet."

"Did you call her mother?" Angel questioned quietly. "And everyone else?"

Willow nodded. "Oz went to pick up Xander and Anya. His car's in the shop."

Angel nodded a little. Before he could say anything else, a doctor came out of the ER. He looked around for a moment, then saw Willow. "You the young woman who brought in Buffy Summers?"

Willow nodded. "Can we see her? Is she okay?"

"You have to be a family member-"

"He's her fiancé," Willow interrupted, gesturing towards Angel. "You can tell him, right?"

The doctor glanced at Angel, then nodded. "I suspected there was someone like that. In that case, I have good news for you. Ms. Summers will be fine, she's awake now-"

"Is the baby okay?" Angel questioned quietly.

Willow looked away from him. His heart was already broken by all of this, but he still cared enough to ask about the child that could possibly tear him and Buffy apart. It almost broke Willow's heart.

"The baby's fine too," the doctor said, smiling. "Congratulations by the way. The wound missed the baby, barely, but enough."

"Can we see her?" Angel asked quietly. He gave no sign of the way it hurt to be considered the baby's father…

"One at a time, for a short period of time." The doctor answered. He looked at Angel again. "She was asking about an Angel?"

Willow nudged the vampire. "You go in first, and come out and tell us how she's really doing."

Angel nodded. "Which room?"

"I'll take you there."

*

Buffy looked up as he came in, and a soft smile settled on her features. "Hi." She said, her voice unusually raspy.

He went over to the side of the bed and placed a kiss on her forehead. "What happened? Willow didn't get a chance to tell me." He sat down on the edge of the bed, touching her face. A bruise marred her perfect cheek, and he felt pure rage raising inside of him.

Buffy looked down at her hands. "Riley overheard Willow and me talking. He got pissed about it, and him and two of his buddies attacked me." She shrugged, then winced. "Ow," she muttered. "Did you ask the doctor when I can get out of here?"

He smiled a little, and raised her hand, kissing the top of it. "You'll stay in here as long as you need to," he ordered. She opened her mouth to protest, but he cut her off. "You can't afford to be out only half healed or anything."

She looked up at him. "Yeah. Got that whole baby thing to worry about." They could use me as a poster for safe sex adds, Buffy thought bitterly.

Angel sighed. "Seriously Buffy, be careful."

She smiled halfheartedly. "I guess." She sobered. "You went after him?"

Angel's jaw clenched. "Tried. He called for backup, and the only one with me was Spike."

Buffy sighed. "That's okay. He's done something. I don't know how or anything, but he's stronger than I am." Their gazes met. "He caught me off guard, and then stabbed me." She let her hand rest on his thigh. "As soon as I'm out, we'll both go after him. But I get to kick his ass."

He set his hand on top of hers. "I don't know about that. I'm the one who had to see you on the ground with blood all over."

"I'm the one who got stabbed."

"I'm the one who couldn't even start beating him because his friends showed up."

"I'm the one who got knocked unconscious, and come to think of it, knocked up by him."

Angel was quiet for a moment. Then he sighed. "We'll argue over it when you're back to normal."

"Oh look. It's amazing. I feel much better." Buffy started to sit up, then her eyes widened with pain. Angel quickly helped her lay back down. She clutched her stomach, and her eyes squeezed closed.

"Or not," he said, smirking slightly.

She opened her eyes and glared at him. "I'm gonna wipe that smirk off your face. As soon as I can move without wanting to die."

He did smirk fully now, and looked down at her face. "I look forward to it."

She struggled so she wouldn't smile, but it didn't work.

"Oh my god, Buffy," Joyce said from the doorway. She rushed in the room. "Oh, baby, are you okay?"

Buffy smiled pleasantly. Angel stepped back. "I'm fine mom, really,"

"What happened?" Joyce demanded. She looked at Angel. "Were you with her?"

"Mom, don't worry about it, I'm fine, and no, he showed up after. Oh my god. Willow, is she okay?" Buffy looked at Angel.

"She's fine." Angel assured her. "She got me, remember?"

Buffy relaxed. "Oh yeah."

"Are you sure you're okay?" Joyce questioned. "And the baby's okay?"

Buffy smiled, a little unhappily. "We're both fine, mom,"

Joyce sighed. "All right. Should I call your father?" she questioned.

"And tell him that I got in a fight, got hurt, almost got a baby killed, but now I'm okay?"

Joyce sighed. "I see your point."

She looked at Angel. "Nice to see you Angel," she said, a little stiffly.

"You too, Mrs. Summers." Angel said quietly.

"See you later, honey," Joyce said, standing. "I left some things undone at the office, so I have to get back pretty quick."

"Bye mom."

Buffy sighed as her mom left the room, then looked at Angel again. "I'm so tired," she said, sighing.

He sat down on the edge of the bed once more. "I'm going to go tell the others to make their visits quick, then I want you to get some sleep. Okay?"

She nodded a little. "Tell the doctor I want to go home."

He smiled a little, and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. "I love you," he told her quietly, then left.

Buffy closed her eyes. When she opened them, the room was empty. She sighed. She had a lot to think about.
