Joyce Summers had died of a "freak accident" before her daughters could fully understand what their powers were and what they meant. They weren’t even supposed to be endowed with them until their eighteenth birthdays. But, a sick twist of Fate locked their destinies together forever, a destiny that they were unable to escape. It was Rupert Giles who initially became the guardian of the Charmed Ones after their mother had died, having been her brother and the only trusted person to hold such a responsibility. He knew everything and more, considering he was a Warlock with limited powers and a respected member of the official Watchers Council in England. It never bothered him much that the most potent power of the family was divested in the females, but it did bother his brother, Ethan Rayne, who had not taken well to that bit of information and had turned himself over to the dark side, abandoning his family name to cover his history. But, as the Fates would have it, he was in no such luck as his quest for more power ended his life. It was apparent to the family the trouble he could be and regretfully ratted him out and a couple of demons had snatched his life from him. His death wasn’t grieved, considering he didn’t think of the Giles’ family as his own. Joyce Summers was the strongest out of the three, having the ability to freeze time and see the future from visions that foretold of people in danger. Rupert had the ability to move things with his mind, although greatly limited, while Ethan only had the ability to cast simple spells, making him one of the lesser warlocks in the family history. And it was the Fates that drove this family apart and eventually led to the death of Joyce at the hands of her lover, a Whitelighter who had been seduced into the dark side. Although rare, Joyce got dealt the unlucky hand by the Fates and was later blamed by the Elders. It was never really clear why Rupert joined the Watchers Council. He himself was unable to comprehend his decision because there hadn’t been one person in the family line to even think of becoming a Watcher and maybe someday being by a Slayer’s side. He just went along with what his destiny was pointing him towards. It was Joyce’s first affair that brought her her first daughter, Willow Giles. Although the man later abandoned her after a chance encounter with a demon, Joyce had cherished her first born with all her heart, knowing that the future of the world laid within the infant’s small hands. As much as the thought had terrified her, Joyce had pushed forward, raised to believe in the world they fought for. A long-winded relationship brought Joyce her second born, Cordelia Giles. The father of her second child died in a car crash three months after Cordelia had been born and Joyce had grieved a great deal, terribly saddened by the fact that the Fates had to take him away in such a normal way. It was her first marriage that brought Joyce her third baby, Buffy Summers, into the world. Joyce and Hank Summers were married for six years before he was taken from their lives. He cherished Willow and Cordelia as if they were his own and spoiled each of his children rotten. It was five years into the relationship that the arguing started and during the divorce process that Hank lost his life to a heart attack. Old enough to finally understand, the family grieved for the lost husband and father. Willow Giles was twenty, Cordelia Giles was eighteen and Buffy Summers was seventeen when Joyce Summers lost her life to her lover. Their long-lost, but never forgotten, Uncle Giles had come to take care of them after the funeral. He moved into the Manor shortly after and quickly became a father-figure for them in more ways than one. His long time in England lent him an accent and a new attitude about the American way. It was a year after Joyce’s death that Buffy was called to be the Slayer and Rupert Giles to be her official Watcher. With the help of her sisters and a period of time away from her life after their grandmother died, Buffy adjusted and dove into her new life with vigor, enjoying the fact that something was finally hers, and hers alone, considering she was the youngest. It was another year when the Charmed Ones were finally capable of their powers. Rupert had been planning it all along and constantly wondering when they would become stationed in the magick world. He didn’t have to wait long. Willow Giles had the power to move things with her mind Cordelia Giles could freeze time. Buffy Summers could predict the future with premonitions. Together, they formed The Charmed Ones.
