"I WANNA BE SEDATED." BtVS Song.
Spike sings the line “I wanna be sedated” from the Ramones’ track of the same name (“I Wanna be Sedated”, Road to Ruin, 1978) to Buffy, before asking her if she likes the Ramones, when they are on stakeout in his car in “Crush” (Season Five).
Despite his origins as a middle-class sentimental poet more than a century ago, Spike is clearly identified with an amoral, disaffected violent punk/rock aesthetic. His love of punk, evidenced elsewhere by Sex Pistols’ CDs in his crypt (“The Initiative,” Season Four) and references to the Clash (“The “I” in Team”, Season Four), extends to the New York punk scene.
We know he was in New York at the time because he killed the Slayer, Nikki Wood, there in 1977 (“Fool for Love,” Season Five). His look in that episode with his ripped jeans, safety-pinned top, spiky hair, kohl rimmed eyes, silver chains and studs is reminiscent of another punk star, Billy Idol of GenerationX, even down to the trademark sneer.
