"TALES OF BRAVE ULYSEES." BtVS Song.

Giles and Joyce listen to this song by legendary rock band Cream (from the psychedelic 1967 album Disraeli Gears) in his apartment in “Band Candy” (Season Three).

  Disraeli Gears

His cool musical tastes (as represented by his vinyl collection, admired by musician Oz in “The Harsh Light of Day,” Season Four) are contrasted to her preferences for Seals and Crofts and Juice Newton. He dreams of getting a band together whilst she muses about watching pay-per-view TV or going to the Bronze. The latter is dismissed as “dead” by Giles in his incarnation as the rebellious Ripper.

The following dialogue is taken from The Buffy Dialogue Database:

JOYCE: You got good albums.

GILES: Yeah, they're okay. (lights the cigarettes)

JOYCE: Do you like Seals and Croft? (gets a look) Yeah, me neither. (accepts a cigarette) Thanks. So how come they, uh, call you Ripper?

GILES: Wouldn't you like to know.

GILES: Hmm, wait a minute. Listen to this bit. (guitar riff) It rocks!

JOYCE: It's good.

GILES: Man, I gotta get a band together.

JOYCE: Hey, Ripper, you wanna watch TV? I know how to order pay-per-view.

GILES: No, let's go out and have some fun. Tear things up a bit.

JOYCE: Okay. We could go to the Bronze.

GILES: Not bloody likely. That place is dead

After her death, in an act of remembrance, Giles listens to the song again on his own in “Forever” (Season Five). The scene begins with a close-up of a record on a turntable and then we see Giles pensive, drink in hand, privately mourning Joyce through the music which links them for the viewer.
