CELINE DION. BtVS Intertext/Allusion.

In "The Freshman" (Season Four), Buffy’s roommate Kathy Newman puts up her poster for Celine Dion.

Her penchant for Dion, Cher and other ‘VH1 divas’ signifies that she does not fit in with the Scoobies who prefer indie bands (at the end of the episode Willow replaces the poster with one for Dingoes Ate My Baby).

Until 2001 the Viacom music channel VH1 targetted an older demographic than MTV and whilst Kathy might seem to be the typical co-ed, she is in fact a Mok’tagar demon who is some three thousand years old (although this is young for her species).

In "Living Conditions" (Season Four) Buffy and Willow discuss Kathy’s musical taste or lack thereof. By saying that she and Buffy, in contrast to Kathy, put the ‘grrr’ in girl, Willow not only references their empowerment and strength in demon hunting but also obliquely references the Riot Grrrl bands featured elsewhere on the show who are often held up as an indication of its feminist ideology as well as further evidence of its indie aesthetics. It also provides an intertextual nod to the Mutant Enemy ident at the end of the show, ‘grr arrrgh’.

The following dialogue is taken from the Buffy Dialogue Database:

BUFFY: Darn, I could use a little play tonight. Listening to the best of VH1 all day sort of put me on edge.

WILLOW: Oh, Kathy's still spinnin' the divas?

BUFFY: "'Cause it's the fun-est!" Well, no big. College is a time of change, right? I bet, before too long, she'll be trip-hoppin' all over the place.

WILLOW: Yeah! I mean, this whole dorm thing is just an adjustment we need to make. You know? I mean, my roomie is kind of challenging too.

BUFFY: And what are we if not women up to a challenge? WILLOW: Exactly! I mean, did we not put the 'grr' in girl?
