THE SOUND OF MUSIC. BtVS Intertext/Allusion.
In "The Dark Age" (Season Two), when Giles asks Jenny how she is, after being possessed by the demon Eyghon that he summoned in his youth, she refers to the performance and lyrics of the title song from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965). The full lyrics are "The hills are alive with the sound of music/With songs they have sung for a thousand years/The hills fill my heart with the sound of music/My heart wants to sing every song it hears."
However, unlike Julie Andrews’ character Maria running around the Austrian hills, Jenny is not filled with zest for life after this traumatic experience and withdraws from Giles although in this episode they had shared their first kiss. Giles then picks up on the reference when a concerned Buffy enquires if Jenny is okay. The younger Buffy doesn’t get it.
The following dialogue is taken from the Buffy Dialogue Database:
GILES: Uh... I-I-I tried to call you last night, s-see how you were.
JENNY: Yeah, I-I-I, uh... I left my phone off the hook. I seem to need a lot of sleep lately.
GILES: But, but you're al-alright? Is, is, is there anything you need?
JENNY: Mm, no, I'm fine. I mean, I'm not... running around, wind in my hair, 'the hills are alive with the sound of music' fine, but... I'm coping.
BUFFY: Is she okay?
GILES: Um... The hills are not alive.
BUFFY: I'm sorry to hear that. I think.
GILES: I don't think she'll ever really forgive me. Maybe she shouldn't.
BUFFY: Maybe you should.
