Angie stirred softly. She pulled the blanket up over her shoulder as the sound of unfamiliar voices talking slowly began to register to her. The air smelt of cooking food which brought a small smile to her face. She opened her eyes slowly and frowned. She sat up on the sofa and looked around.

“Oh no,” she said softly to herself

“Good morning,” Rebecca said cheerfully, “You sleep okay?”

Angie turned to see Rebecca standing over her holding a robe.

“Oh my god I am so sorry,” Angie exclaimed, “I-I didn’t do it . . .”

“It’s okay,” Rebecca replied reassuringly handing the robe to her, “You’re mom should be over soon with some clothes.”

Angie looked at Rebecca curiously as she slipped on the robe. She got up off the sofa and looked around the living room as Rebecca walked into the kitchen to help serve breakfast.

“You’re not freaked out?” Angle asked

Rebecca and Alex shared a look.

“You might not believe this,” Rebecca replied, “but it’s not the strangest thing I’ve seen you hungry?”

Angie nodded and walked over to the table. She sat down while Rebecca placed a plate in front of her. She couldn’t figure Rebecca out. Every other house she’s appeared in somebody has screamed or looked at her scared but Rebecca didn’t. Angie shifted awkwardly on the seat. She was feeling very self conscious about only wearing a robe in a stranger’s house. Rebecca sat down across from her and began to eat.

“So you said this started when you were twelve right?” Rebecca asked

“Yeah,” Angie replied

“Did anything else happen?”

“Like what?”

“Like something you saw and couldn’t explain.”

“No.” Angie replied cautiously

“So it started on its own?”

“Yeah,” Angie replied, “I remember going to bed then waking up in the park. I don’t know how I got there.”

“Are you sure there wasn’t anything else around.”

“No Nothing, well, there was this weird pain in my neck like someone stabbed my with a fork.”

Rebecca sat there for a moment absorbing the information. Just then there was a light knocking at the door. Rebecca got up and answered it. She then led Veronica into the lounge room. When Angie saw her mother she jumped out of the chair, rushed over and hugged her.

“I’m so sorry about this.” Veronica said apologetically, “I would understand if this was awkward for you.”

“Don’t worry about it. I think I might be able to help her.” Rebecca replied

Veronica looked at the Divine One with a mixture of surprise and hope.

“Are you serious?”

“I have experience in this . . . field.”

“You’re saying you could stop this from happening?”

“I’ll have to consult with a friend of mine but there’s a good chance.”

Angie sat awkwardly in the library as Rebecca, Nigel, Bell, Nolan and Heidi looked at her. When Rebecca said she was taking her to her friend the last place she expected to end up was in the school library.

“Angie tell Nigel what you told me.”

Angie told Nigel about the travelling and when she started. She closed her eyes and expected the other teenagers in the room to laugh but there was nothing, in fact, it looked like Nigel was actually contemplating what she had just said. Rebecca turned to the watcher

“What re we thinking?” she asked

Nigel shrugged

“Translocation spell maybe, some kind of quantum tunnelling, perhaps a hex or a curse of some kind.” Nigel replied

“I don’t think it’s directly magic related,” Rebecca replied, “Angie could you show him the growth on the back of your neck.”

Angie was hesitant at first but then turned around and pulled back her hair.

“Ewwwww.” Nolan said involuntarily

Nigel leaned in and examined it closely.

“Fascinating,” Nigel remarked, “how long have you had this growth?”

“All my life. My mom thinks it’s some kind of problem.”

“Indeed.”

“Last night I saw something come out of them,” Rebecca continued, “They were like three small spines.”

Nigel looked at the ridged pattern on the mound curiously.

“Wait. Three small spine?” Nigel said

“Yeah they were at least an inch.”

Nigel stood up and did some mental cross-referencing. He turned and ventured into the stacks as Angie turned and faced the rest of the group.

“I got to be the weirdest girl in school.” She said sadly as she played with her hands

The group looked at each other. Belle smiled at Angie

“Hi we haven’t properly met,” she said, “My name is Belle I’m the vampire slayer.”

Angie looked at Belle in surprise.

“Vampire what?”

“Slayer. I have super speed and strength that I have to use it to fight vampires.”

Nolan put his hand on Heidi’s back

“Heidi here can see the future.” Nolan commented

Angie looked over to Heidi who looked at her timidly as she tried to hide behind her hair.

“Then there’s Rebecca,” Belle continued, “she’s something call the Divine One No idea what that means but she can do tons of stuff.”

“It’s true,” Rebecca continued, “You’re not alone in this Angie.”

“Yeah, you think you’re weird? Well welcome to the weird gang.” Nolan said proudly

Belle shot Nolan a look. Nolan shrugged at her.

“What?” he asked

“Remember that talk we had about you not naming things ‘cause you suck at it?” belle said in an annoyed tone

“Yeah.”

“Don’t try and name our group.”

“So you guys all have powers?” Angie said curiously

“Yep,” Belle replied, “Welcome to the club.”

For the first time since this all happened Angie smiled. She felt like she was the only one going through this now that she knows that there’s others it doesn’t seem as bad. She looked over to Nolan curiously.

“What can you do Nolan?”

Nolan looked at Angie anxiously

“Me? Oh, ah, my power is very subtle . . . you wouldn’t even know it was working it’s so subtle.”

“Yeah my brother has enhanced whining abilities.” Belle replied

Angie smirked as Nolan looked at belle irritated.

“Thanks for the leg up sis.”

Just then Nigel returned from the stack. He was scanning through a book as he returned to the group. Finding the page he was looking for he showed the picture to Angie.

“Does any of your family look like this?” he asked

Angie looked at the illustration of a thin looking individual with unhuman qualities. There was something very familiar about that image.

“I think my grate-grand father looked like that,” Angie replied, “They told me he had some kind of sickness that made him look like that.”

Nigel smiled.

“I think we’ve found our solution.” Nigel said happily, “Angie, here, is part demon.”

The teenagers looked at Nigel confused and surprised.

“I didn’t know that could happen.” Belle said

“Oh yes it’s very possible,” Nigel replied, “Interspecies mating is a fascinating topic to study.”

“I’ll bet you perv.” Nolan replied

“This is a Ethhalnu Demon,” Nigel continued ignoring Nolan, “They’re a peaceful nomadic race whose main transportation ability is teleporting.”

“So I’m, like, part . . . that thing?”

“One eighth to be precise.”

“Wait, you said that they travel like that,” Belle commented, “Do they take everything with them?”

“It says here that they usually carry ample supplies with them were ever they go.”

“How come Angie can’t?”

“I suspect that because she’s mostly human it has diluted her power. The strange thing is that juvenile Ethhalnu don’t reach the rapid jumping stage until they reach eighteen.”

“It only started happening when we arrived in this town.”

“The Hellmouth,” Rebecca replied, “This has got to be the Signums work.”

“You can fix this right?” Angie asked nervously

“Yes, actually, I can,” Nigel replied, “According to this when an Ethhalnu reaches the early adult stage they have the three spines on the back of their neck removed. This forces the power to adapt to the body thus giving them full control.”

“So you cut those things off and I go back to normal.”

“Possibly or at the very least you’ll gain some control over your power.”

“Well let’s get started!” Angie said

“To that you’ll need to be asleep.” Nigel said

Angie frowned.

“But I’ll go somewhere if that happens.”

“If I’m right there will be a small window of opportunity for the spines to be removed before you teleport.”

“Nigel, are you sure about this?” Rebecca asked, “Window or not she could end up anywhere.”

Nigel consulted the book again.

“It looks like the spines have a very weak density. I should be able remove them with scissors without harming Angie at all.”

Angie looked at both the adults worried. Rebecca helped Angie up onto the table. She rolled onto her side and pulled her hair out of the way. Nigel fetched some scissors from his office and returned. He nodded to Rebecca who knelt down.

“Are you ready?” she asked

Rebecca noticed the fear in angles eyes. She smiled at her warmly.

“Don’t worry everything’s going to be fine.” She said

“I-I don’t feel sleepy.” Angie said

“Let me deal with that.” Rebecca replied

Rebecca touched Angie on the head lightly and Angie fell fast asleep. Nigel readied himself as he saw the three spines extrude from the back of her neck. Carefully he snipped of the first one. It came away with out a problem. The second was a little more resilient but in the end it gave way. Nigel brushed the other two aside and began to work on the last one. The spine glowed brightly as a bolt of energy travelled up the metal scissors and struck Nigel on the hand. He yanked his hand back in shock and grabbed it.

Before he could make another attempt there was a bright flash of light and Angie disappeared again.

“Damn it!” Nigel yelled

“What the hell happened?” Rebecca asked

“The static build up from the power shocked me.” Nigel replied disappointed, “I didn’t have time for a second.”

Rebecca looked at the watcher angrily for a moment then shifted back to the job at hand.

“Alright we have to find her,” Rebecca said, “Let’s just hope she hasn’t gone very far.”

Angie shivered. The cold floor made her skin sting. She opened her eyes and looked around. The majority of the room was covered in ice and in the center were large slabs of meat. It looked like she was in a meat freezer somewhere but she didn’t know where. Angie rubbed herself to try and keep warm as she walked to the door. It was locked tight. She banged on it as loud as she could; screaming for help, but nobody came. Her hands were being to go numb from the cold. Angie sat down and hugged her legs to try and absorb as much heat as possible.

Rebecca re-entered the library.

“She’s not on the school grounds,” she said, “I checked twice.”

Nigel dropped his head

“That only leaves twenty square miles in every direction to search.” He said in frustration

“We’ll find her Nigel.” Rebecca said insistently

Just then the door burst open. Heidi rushed in a state of panic.

“Heidi?” Rebecca asked

“Angie,” Heidi said between gasps of breath, “f-freezer.”

“Oh good lord,” Nigel exclaimed, “With out any clothes she’s not going to last very long.”

Rebecca knelt down and looked the seer seriously in the eye.

“Where is she?” she asked

Angie lay shivering on the floor. The numbness had spread to most of her body and hypothermia had begun to set in. Angie squinted when she saw a strange hole appear in the air. Rebecca stepped out and quickly rushed up to Angie. She bundled her in her jacket and carried her back through the portal.

The frightened teenager sat miserably in the library wrapped in a number of blankets. Rebecca looked over to Nigel as she tried to settle her down. She ran her hand down the back of Angie’s neck and felt something. She brushed some of the hair away and made a discovery. Because of the intense cold of the freezer the last spine had remained extruded frozen in place. Rebecca quickly picked up the scissors and snipped the final spine off. Angie flinched for a second.

“What did you just do?” she asked

“The last spine was out so I just cut it off.” Rebecca replied, “Feel any different?”

“Yeah,” Angie replied, “Something’s gone, I can feel it, I think it worked.”

Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief. Angie was going to be fine from now on.

“So you didn’t go anywhere last night?” Belle asked

“Nope,” Angie replied, “Woke up where I went to sleep.”

Belle, Nolan and Angie sat in the cafeteria. Angie seemed a lot happier since yesterday. With her teleporting gone she was able to finally relax.

“Good for you,” Nolan replied, “Welcome back to the ranks of the powerless.”

“We don’t know that’s true yet Nolan,” Belle replied, “it might come back and she’ll be able to control it.”

“I hope it doesn’t. It was nothing but trouble.” Angie replied

Belle smiled and nodded. She looked at her watch.

“Oh gees I’m late for training.” Belle said collecting her stuff, “Nigel is going to kill me. I’ll see you guys later.”

Belle rushed out of the room leaving Nolan and Angie alone. They looked at each other awkwardly for a moment.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” Nolan asked

“Yeah,” Angie replied, “This whole thing just made me feel stupid.”

“I don’t think you’re stupid. I think your cool . . .”

Angie smiled at Nolan. She was right when she said that Nolan was cute in a goofy sought of way.

“. . . plus you have great boobs.”

The smile dropped from Angie’s face. Nolan brain just caught up with his mouth. He looked up at Angie anxiously

“I mean, not that I looked or anything . . . it’s just you were in my room all . . . they felt great if that makes you fell better.”

Angie gave him a disgusted look before she collected her stuff and left the table. Nolan dropped his head onto the table. Once again his mouth has ruined everything.

In the library Rebecca watched as Willow examined Heidi. This would have happened yesterday but the news of Penny’s death took priority. Willow sensed the energies around the seer and frowned. Willow stood up and walked over to Rebecca. She had a perplexed look on her face.

“What’s wrong Will,” Rebecca asked, “Do you know where Heidi’s getting her power?”

“I have no idea.” Willow replied

Rebecca looked at the goddess stunned

“What?” she asked

“Usually I can feel a person’s aura and that would tell me but with Heidi I get nothing,” Willow replied, “its like something is concealing it from me.”

“I thought a seer can’t do that.”

“No they can’t which makes me think Heidi’s not a seer.”

“Then what is she?”

“That’s going to take more time.”

Rebecca looked over at Heidi who was sitting cross legged on one of the tables. If this girl had the power to hide her abilities from a goddess that could be she’s a bigger danger then she first thought.

“Tell me as soon as you can.” Rebecca replied

Willow nodded. She returned to Heidi and raised her hands again. Heidi looked at her curiously

“You’re worried.” She said

“We’re just trying to find out the best way to help you.” Willow replied

“Not about me,” Heidi replied, “About that slayer.”

Willow put her hands down.

“Penny was a friend.” Willow replied, “We all miss her.”

Heidi dropped her head.

“S-she misses everybody as well . . . keeps it underneath . . . it hurts her inside . . . T-thinks everybody’s dead.”

Willow looked at Heidi curiously

“Penny died a couple of days ago.” Willow said

Heidi looked up at Willow. She shook her head.

“S-she's not dead.” She replied, “She’s very sad.”
