105: Run – Act 2

~ The Watchers Council, Sussex England ~

Bruce hale sat calmly on the other side of Rodgers desk. He had his feet up and his hand lay comfortably in his lap as he waited for the head watcher to return. A moment later Rodger entered. He was in the foulest of moods after receiving from America. He saw Bruce’s feet on the desk and shot the enforcer a look. Bruce quickly removed them as Rodger sat down.

“You wanted to see me sir?” Bruce asked casually

“Yes,” Rodger replied, “I just got word from one of the Neighborhood Watch in California. She has informed me that she’s located more slayers four of them.”

“Where?”

Rodger didn’t make any effort to conceal his anger.

“Raleighfield.” He replied

Bruce looked at the watcher.

“You’re kidding. Why didn’t Nigel call you?”

“Because he’s an idiot!” Rodger snapped, “I want you to head to Raleighfield and bring these four back to the council buildings.”

“No worries sir. Have them back by the end of the week.”

The enforcer stood collecting his things. He turned and headed for the door.

“Bruce!” Rodger called out, “I don’t want a repeat of Vic.”

Bruce smiled.

“She’ll be right sir not that up myself.”

“You’re pulling out?!” Coach Miller remarked

Belle sat awkwardly in his office. She rubbed her upper arm nervously as the domineering Male glared at he from the other side of his desk

“Sorry coach I just have . . . other things going on.” Belle replied

Coach Miller Pulled off his baseball cap and rubbed his forehead stressfully.

“It better be life or death Galloway ‘cause I’m not gonna except anything less,” he snapped at her, “We have our first meet in three weeks and you pull this stunt on me now?”

Belle looked down guilty.

“I-I didn’t want to cause a problem.”

“Oh no this isn’t a problem this is a disaster! How am I supposed to replace you this close to the race huh? And what about the rest of the team did you think of them?”

“I’m sorry.” Belle said softly

Coach Miller picked up his clipboard and started to scan down the list attached to it.

“Sorry don’t win trophies,” Coach Miller replied, “Get out!”

Belle quickly got to her feet. She headed for the door but before exiting she turned back to the Coach

“I really didn’t want to . . .”

“Did you lose your hearing as well as your nerve? I said get out!”

Belle left the office quickly. She lead against the wall and cupped her hand across her as tears begin to form in her eyes. The last thing she wanted to do was to quit the team but with her slayer training it was hard to find time to practice.

“Hey.” A soft voice called out from next to her

Belle looked over to see Rebecca walking over to her. She had just finished talking to the math teacher when she noticed Belle exiting Coach Miller’s office. Rebecca motioned Belle to follow her and they both entered Rebecca’s office.

“What happened?” Rebecca asked curiously

“I quit the track team.” Belle replied sadly

Rebecca looked at her curiously.

“Why? I though you loved running.”

“I did, I mean, I do it’s just I have to focus on slayer stuff now right?”

“True but it doesn’t mean you have to be the slayer all the time,” Rebecca explained, “There are times where you can be yourself.”

Belle looked up at Rebecca.

“But I’m faster then all of them it wouldn’t be fair.” She replied

Rebecca smiled at her. She interlaced her fingers on the desk and looked at Belle warmly.

“What is the key rule about vampire slaying?” she asked

Belle scanned her mind for what Rebecca was teaching her.

“It’s not just the power,” Belle quoted, “it the balance.”

“That’s right it’s about knowing your strengths and knowing your opponents weaknesses. Same rule applies in sport you know your strength and you know the other runners weaknesses now you have to find the balance. Do you know how fast you ran before you were called?”

“I think so,” Belle replied, “Nolan always noted them down.”

“Well stick to around that time and it should make it fair.”

Belle thought about this. A smile crossed her face.

“You know if you wanted practice time all you had to do was ask,” Rebecca continued, “I’ll talk it over with Nigel.”

“Thanks Rebecca,” Belle replied as she stood up

“Anytime.” Rebecca replied as she opened the door for Belle

After Belle left Rebecca returned to her desk. She felt good about helping out the newly activated slayer. Knowing how hard the calling can get herself she was glad she could . . .

Rebecca gripped the desk hard. She winced as another jolt of pain shot through her body. Her muscles felt like they were on fire and any subtle movement made it worse. Rebecca closed her eyes and slowed her breathing. Over the next few minutes the pain slowly subsided and she returned back to normal. Rebecca leaned back in her chair as she took her final deep breaths. The pain was steadily getting worse and it was taking more and more of her inner strength to suppress it.

As much as Rebecca hated to admit it the virus was acting quicker then she thought.

~ LAX airport, Los Angeles California – That evening ~

Sarah waited patiently near the front entrance. She got word that the council was sending an enforcer and she was to be the welcoming committee. From inside the airport Bruce and his assistant Gavin wheeled out their luggage. Sarah recognized the cocky Australian from the photo emailed to her and walked up to them.

“Bruce?” she asked

“That’s me,” he replied, “You neighborhood watch?”

“Yeah.”

The three of them started to make their way through the car park to the van the council arranged.

“So we’re dealing with four of them?” he asked

“That’s right.”

“How tight is the group?”

“They spend most of their time together,” Sarah explained, “The one you have to watch out for is Lea. She’s sorta their leader.”

“Alright deal with her first.”

Sarah smiled evilly to herself.

“I got a better idea.”

~ Heatherview Graveyard, Raleighfield California ~

Lea had her back tight against the wall of the mausoleum. She looked around the corner and saw Belle walking slowly through the graveyard. Lea had been scouting the graveyards ever since she heard about the existence of the fifth slayer and caught Belle entering Heatherview. A moment later two vamps clawed their way out of the ground and Belle went to work. Lea studied Belle and tried to assess her skill. Her fighting was okay but her confidence in her moves still needed work. Lea waited for the vamps to clear before her approach.

It didn’t take long before the slayer cleared out the area. Lea was about to leave her hiding place when she noticed Rebecca walk up and talk to her. She frowned seriously and furrowed her eyebrows. What was this slayer dong with the Divine One? Doesn’t she know what she did to them? Lea figured she was in denial of the battle she had seen it many times with other Gen S slayers. Moving as silently as she could Lea shifted to her next position.

“Not bad.” Rebecca said, “You’re hearts still not in it completely thought.”

Belle leaned against one of the tomb stones.

“I know. I’m trying.”

Rebecca noticed the look on Belle’s face.

“But . . .” Rebecca prompted

Belle shrugged.

“It’s just stuff.”

“You’re talking about the running?”

Belle dropped her head. Rebecca smiled warmly, sat next to her, and put her arm around her shoulder.

“It’s really your choice Belle nobody can make it for you.”

“I just don’t know what to do, I mean, I love running but this is important to.”

“I told you Belle you don’t have to give up either.”

“Yeah I know it’s just . . . I was thinking what mom would have wanted me to do.”

Rebecca looked at Belle closely. She had never mentioned her mother dieing before this puts a whole new light on this young slayer. Rebecca slowly put the pieces together.

“That’s why you keep running isn’t it?”

“For those ten seconds the pain goes away,” Belle replied, “it’s like everything is perfect again and I don’t have to worry about anything.”

Rebecca smiled at hugged Belle warmly.

“I think you’re mom would have wanted you to make your own choice.” Rebecca replied, “Hey, do you want to try some vamps on your own?”

Belle looked up at Rebecca in surprise

“Do you think I’m ready for that?”

Rebecca shrugged.

“Only one way of finding out.”

Rebecca gestured to head around the corner. Still not one hundred percent confident she ventured off. Belle walked cautiously keeping her senses as sharp as possible. Belle stopped for a moment and looked around sharply. She kicked out behind her catching the vampire in the stomach. Belle spun around and round house kicked the vampire in the head. Belle was about to lunge in for the stake when a second vamp grabbed her from behind. He forced the stake out of her hand and threw her roughly against the wall. Belle swung out with a left hook but the vamp blocked it punching her across the face in return. He grabbed her by the throat. Belle struggled against the vampires grip but felt herself beginning to lose consciousness.

Suddenly the vampire screamed and exploded into dust. Lea kicked the other vamp in the head followed by a leg sweep staking the vampire before he hit the ground. She dusted herself off then walked over to help Belle.

“You alright?” she asked

Belle looked at Lea closely. At high school everybody knows the head cheerleader but this was the last thing Belle expected

“Lea?” Belle exclaimed

Lea didn’t have time to answer she looked around sharply to make sure the coast was clear.

“Come on,” Lea replied insistently

Lea lead Belle further down the graveyard and into a mausoleum she noticed on the way in. they both entered and Lea closed the door behind them. Belle looked at Lea hesitantly.

“I just need to know this,” Belle said, “You’re a slayer aren’t you?”

“Yeah I am. Why are you hanging around with the Divine One?”

“What?”

Lea folded her arms angrily and started to pace.

“Do you want the council to find you? ‘Cause that’s where you’re going to end up if you’re anywhere nears her.”

“What are you talking about? Rebecca’s been helping me.”

“Does the underground know you’re here?”

“Lea what’s going on?”

Lea didn’t hear the question. Her mind was running at a million miles per hour. How could this young slayer been so careless.

“Alright we have to get you out of town.” Lea remarked, “I’ll talk to our contact tonight.”

Belle was now getting scared. Lea always seemed nice to her but she didn’t like this side of her.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” Belle said

Lea grabbed Belle firmly by the shoulders.

“Listen to me Belle it’s not safe! The Divine One would have called Rodger by now we need to get you out of sight.”

“I don’t understand. What have you got against Rebecca?” Belle asked

Belle notice Lea’s fierce expression.

“She ruined our lives Belle.” Lea replied
