Part 1

Giles paced Angel’s office in the Hyperion hotel. After the battle with the First Buffy wanted to go to L.A. to let Angel know that they had made it out. Problem was, they had made it out but were left with nothing. No money, no where to live, no means of supporting themselves. He had some money in a bank account in England, but not enough to support all of them. It would take time for them all to find jobs, and someplace to live. Angel had graciously offered them the use of the hotel until they could come up with a better plan. And with the large number of people they had to deal with they needed the space.

Some of the girls had gone home to their families after they left Sunnydale, but many had no family to return to. Their families had been killed by Bringers when they were searching for potential slayers. Many of those girls had chosen to stay and continue to train with Buffy and Faith. Kennedy had been one of the girls to return home. Willow had been quiet and distant since the newly-activated slayer had made her decision. Though Willow believed Kennedy had come to terms with her magic, Giles wasn’t surprised to find she hadn’t. It was a lot for a child to deal with, becoming a slayer and having a girlfriend that may at any time decide to feed off the power you possess as a slayer.

Xander had also been distant in the last weeks. The only person that he had much contact with was Andrew, which was not surprising since they both had taken Anya's death so hard. Andrew’s initial fear of the former vengeance demon had waned as their friendship grew, and by the time of her death, the two had become friends. Xander mourned the death of his former finance, and felt a particular sense of loss in knowing that they had never really found the closure their relationship needed.

Robin Wood accepted a position at a school in the Midwest and left to return to a normal life. He had asked Faith to go with him, but she said she was needed here. She wouldn’t leave Buffy to deal with the repercussions of defeating the First and activating the slayers alone.

Dawn had been spending a lot of time with Angel in the last weeks. Much to Giles' surprise, she seemed to be taking Spike's death harder than even Buffy was. He had heard her confess to Angel that her biggest regret was that she hadn't told Spike that she had never really hated him, and that she forgave him. After a heart to heart with Buffy during which the Slayer had admitted that the awful way she treated Spike after she was brought back to life was at least partly responsible for what had happened between them. She had even told Angel she had never really been mad at him for that, she had been hurt that he had left without telling her, without saying goodbye. Too many people in her life had done that.

Angel was also taking Spike’s death harder than expected. Partly because he was also dealing with Cordelia being…gone and something else that he wasn’t willing to talk about. But like Dawn he felt he had treated Spike badly in the last years. He hadn’t taken the changes in the younger vampire seriously. If he had maybe the First wouldn’t ever had been able to affect Spike the way it had. Spike would’ve been able to come to him after he got his soul, instead of hiding in a basement over the Hellmouth.

Buffy was dealing with the changes as best she could. Giles knew part of her was happy to not have to be fully responsible for saving the world anymore. That there were other’s to take some of that burden now, but she had also gotten a new burden when the old had disappeared. There were now hundreds, possibly thousands of girls all over the world coming into powers they didn’t know about or understand and no Watcher’s Council to find and train them.

They had been doing what they could to track down these new slayers. Giles and Wesley had both contacted everyone they could think of, that had survived, for help in locating these girls. That was another advantage to the Hyperion. There was plenty of room. They had all pitched in to clean and make livable all the rooms. They had completed most of the rooms now. And were currently finishing the last floor, with everyone pitching in and with so much slayer strength to go around now it had gone quickly. They had about forty girls here now. Buffy and Faith were in the basement, which had been converted into a small gym, working with them.

This brought his attention back to the letter before him. It had arrived in yesterday’s mail, but he still wasn’t sure what he should do about it. It was from a friend in England. He hadn’t spoken to the man in years but he had heard about the spell and the new slayers and had contacted him.

Rupert, I hope this finds you, I’m not accustomed to muggle post. I have heard about the spell your charges did to activate the slayers. The girl must be very powerful to have accomplished such a thing.

I’m contacting you because I believe I may have found one of the newly ‘activated’ slayers. She attends school here. She has spent the past weeks at the Order Headquarters. I cannot bring her to you, as I cannot leave at this time, there is too much danger. Because of her friendships it is also not advisable for her to travel alone that distance. I’m also not sure that she should be taken out of school now. She has only two years left, and is very gifted. But she has shown signs of her new powers in the last weeks.

If you have any suggestions on what to do you know how to contact me. RL

If he had found this girl and she was attending a school that his friend didn’t believe she should leave, this wasn’t an ordinary slayer; she would have power beyond her Slayer powers. Removing the girl from her school probably wasn’t a good idea. If Willow had had proper training they may have avoided many of the problems of the last few years. However, not being made aware of, and receive training for her new found Slayer powers wasn’t a good idea either. Sighing Giles opened the door and called for Wesley. Maybe the younger ex-watcher would have an idea.

“Yes, Mr. Giles?” Wesley was standing at the door now.

“I received a letter yesterday. From England,” Giles handed him the piece of parchment.

Wesley quickly scanned the letter. Not sure what the problem was, obviously there was one, or else Giles wouldn’t have been in here pacing all morning or now be consulting him on the finding of a new slayer.

“We could send someone for her I suppose, Fred may be willing…”

“The school she’s attending, I believe, is Hogwarts,” Giles interrupted.

“Hogwarts?” The younger man stared at the older. He had heard of the school of course, it was standard practice in the Watcher’s Council to keep track of the Wizarding World. “The Wizarding School?”

“Yes,” Giles sat in the chair behind the desk letting the other man pace for a while. “This is from Remus Lupin. He’s a wizard and a werewolf. If he knows this girl, and is concerned about her schooling, that is where she is.”

“The danger she’s in?”

“Yes, well we were all a bit distracted in the last months but I heard from some other contacts that Lord Voldemort has returned to full power. That would also be the Order Remus mentioned. He is a member of The Order Of The Phoenix. An organization devoted to stopping the wizard.”

“I’ve heard of it,” Wesley had stopped pacing, “If he is after the girl, bringing her here could…”

“Bring about even more danger for us than having forty new slayers all gathered here is already causing.”

“Yes,” Wesley was still trying to absorb the information. “She does need to be trained though. An untrained slayer can be a danger too.”

“Yes, so can an untrained witch,” Giles removing his glasses, “As Willow has proven.”

“What do you suggest?”

“I was hoping you could help with that,” Giles replied quietly. “We can’t send Buffy or Faith for her, their needed here.”

“Nor can we leave,” Wesley agreed sitting in the chair across from the desk.

“I’m also afraid these new powers coupled with her magical talents may…”

“Prove dangerous?”

“Yes. We need to get her trained. If not here then there.”

“Who do you suggest we send then?”

“We could send Xander,” Giles said after a moment, “He could use the time away I think. I would rather send Andrew, to well get him away from us, but I’m afraid…”

“He would be as useless there as he is here,” Wesley agreed.

“Yes. Xander is capable of working with a new slayer. He’s trained with Buffy often enough. He knows the basics.”

“He would at least be able to start her training until Buffy, Faith, or Angel is free.”

“Yes. We managed to train slayers without any supernatural strength,” Giles agreed, “But Xander will be of no help in dealing with the magical dangers involved. Her magic could be affected by the new powers.”

“I wouldn’t imagine anyone at the school would be prepared for that either,” Wesley agreed, “We could send Willow.”

“Willow?” Giles had been thinking the same thing. She was the only one that could help with any magical repercussions. “Is that wise? She is gaining more control over her own magic but to send her to such an inherently magical place…”

“I don’t see a lot of choice,” Wesley sighed; he knew the dangers in sending Willow. Since they had come to Los Angeles he had gotten more detail about Tara’s death and Willow’s descent into dark magic. “We could send Lorne; he’s the only other one here with enough magical abilities, but…”

“Sending a demon could pose a problem,” Giles agreed. “I guess we should talk to Willow and Xander and see what they think.
