Part 2
Willow picked up the schedule that appeared where her plate had been moments before. She could really get used to the no clean up part of this world. The classes looked interesting, she wasn’t exactly sure what some of them were but it was both school and magic so she was sure she would enjoy it. She was also concerned about them all being advanced, not that she wanted to be in a class of twelve year olds but everyone in her classes would have already been here six years.
“You have Advanced Potions first thing?” Sirius frowned reading over her shoulder.
“That’s a bad thing?” Willow asked turning her head to look at him.
“Yes,” both Sirius and James who was sitting across from him at the table answered.
“Sirius and James both prefer—,” Remus, who was sitting on Willow’s other side, searched for the right word, “flashier magic.”
“You didn’t take it either, Moony,” James replied as Sirius grabbed Willow’s schedule and began comparing it to his.
“I just prefer to take classes I’m more likely to excel at.”
“Looks like you’re on your own this morning then Willow,” Sirius handed her back her schedule. “But we all have advanced Transfiguration after lunch.”
“So am I reading this right then,” Willow asked, “I just have the two classes today?”
Lily took her schedule and examined it carefully for several minutes.
“Yeah, both are double classes,” she finally answered, “So you only have them two days a week. Tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday you have Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts with all of us, and Herbology, with Sirius.”
“Great, at least I’ll only be alone for one class a week,” Willow smiled; “Now I just hope I can find it without getting lost.”
“I have to go that way,” Sirius said standing up and offering his arm, “I’ll walk you.”
“Thanks,” Willow stood and took his arm, smiling when she caught his wink back at his friends.
“So Willow,” Sirius said as they left the hall and made their way through the corridors toward the dungeons, “How do you like England and Hogwarts so far?”
“I didn’t really see much of England but Hogwarts is great.”
“You promised to explain about Vampires, slayers, and werewolves today?”
“From what I understand you don’t really need me to tell you about the greatness of werewolves,” Willow’s smile grew at the shocked look on his face.
“Remus told you?”
“Lily did,” Willow explained, “It’s okay, I have no issues with werewolves, well I do with one certain wolf, but Remus is definitely not that one.”
“You’re sure?”
“Um, unless he snuck to Sunnydale and slept with my boyfriend while in wolf form I’d say no.”
“You have a boyfriend?”
“Did,” Willow clarified, “slept with another wolf then left to find a way to control his wolf.”
“Dated a wolf huh,” Sirius said as they reached to bottom of the stairs, “This is your class.”
“Thanks,” Willow said stepping into the already crowded classroom.
“Hey Willow?” Sirius said, and then waited for her to turn to him before continuing, “How do you feel about dogs?”
Willow’s brow furrowed as she contemplated the question. Why did her feelings on them matter, not that she had any real opinions on them at all.
“Not sure,” she finally answered, “Does it bite?”
“Very possibly,” he laughed at the confused look on her face as he walked away.
Willow shrugged and located a seat in the last row of tables. This class was with Slytherin; despite the warnings to avoid them she was looking forward to meeting students from the other houses. She noticed that several tables held Gryffindors, but they were already paired off, that was the disadvantage of joining the house in the seventh year. She watched as the last of the students filed in, most were arriving in pairs and taking empty tables together. She was beginning to believe she would spend this class sitting alone when someone finally sat next to her.
Of course, she didn’t think he was aware that she was there. He had been reading a large book as he came through the door and had taken the seat next to hers without ever looking up. His shoulder length black hair was hiding most of his face from her view. She assumed he was from Slytherin because she hadn’t seen him last night or this morning but, she thought, he could at least say hello.
“Hi I’m Willow.”
He glanced up from his book and scowled before turning his attention back to what he was reading. Willow frowned at him, at least she had seen his face now, but still there was no need to be rude.
“This would be the part where you tell me your name?”
He frowned at her again without speaking. The blonde girl sitting in front of her turned in her seat and frowned at the guy then smiled at Willow.
“Severus doesn’t like your friends,” she said then holding out her hand, “I’m Narcissa.”
“Hi, I’m Willow,” she shook the other girl’s hand, “My friends?”
“You were talking to Sirius Black and James Potter yesterday and this morning right?”
“Yeah, but it’s not like their here now and I can have more than two friends.”
“Severus is—,” she began but was cut off when Severus slammed his book shut.
“If Severus wanted her to know about him, he would tell her himself Narcissa,” he snapped.
“All she wanted was your name and you wouldn’t give her that much,” the blonde Slytherin snapped in response.
“Fine, my name is Severus Snape, and No I do not like your friends, their arrogant gits,” he said to Willow.
“Right cause no arrogance at this table,” Willow said angrily, “So you can’t talk to me because you saw me talking to Sirius. Well how very ten years old of you.”
“You’re also a Gryffindor and a mud-blood.”
“Okay, I so don’t know what that means but I’m guessing it’s not very nice,” Willow frowned.
Before he could respond the Professor began lecturing, and both turned their attention to the man in the front of the room. He was explaining that the first part of the term, until Christmas break, would be working on a potion that they would be developing. They would be working with a partner, which he would assign to them, to first decide what they wanted the potion to accomplish, and write a short paper on what they believed would be needed to prepare the potion. After that had been approved they were to begin making the potion, preparing and testing until they achieved the desired effects.
After he finished explaining what was expected of them he began making his way through the room, making adjustments in the seating to place students in the pairings he wanted. Reaching their table in the back he nodded to them and turned to the table across from them.
“Excuse me Sir,” Severus said when the professor hadn’t told him to move, “Who will I be working with?”
“Miss Rosenberg.”
“But sir she’s—,” he began to object.
“She’s a new student who can greatly benefit from your knowledge, Mr. Snape,” The professor said and headed back to the front as the students began discussing the assignment.
“Ooh, looks like you’ll have to talk to me now,” Willow said ignoring the scowl on his face.
“I don’t suppose you know anything about potions?”
“Not really, but I learn quickly.”
“I’m not carrying you through this,” he snapped, “Nor am I going to fail because you can’t handle the work.”
“I can handle it,” she snapped just as angrily, “Once we decide what we want to do I can be at the next meeting of this class with a complete list of ingredients and methods, just point me to the damn library.”
“Fine,” he sighed, he doubted she was going to be anything more than an annoyance but he didn’t have any options, “Do you have any suggestions, or would like to hear mine?”
“Yours I guess, I mean you probably knew this was coming and had the whole summer to think about it.”
“Yes, I have,” he said his anger dissipating slightly, at least she wasn’t trying to push her ideas on him, “I was thinking that a mind reading potion would be a good project, one that would last longer periods of time. The one’s that currently exist only work in close contact and for short periods.”
“So you’re thinking something that would work over a distance then, and for days?” Willow asked the idea, while a huge intrusion on someone’s mind was fascinating. “Or are we talking hours, I’m not familiar with mind reading potions so as far as I know they last only minutes.”
“I was hoping for days,” Severus clarified, “The longest one that we have now lasts about two hours.”
“That sounds great,” Willow smiled, “It would be useful, and I can see Buffy totally benefiting from something like that. She could let Giles know about new big bads right away before she forgets anything. Oh and it would make patrolling so much easier.”
“Who is Buffy, and what is a ‘Big Bad’?” He asked frowning.
“Sorry,” Willow blushed, “Buffy is my friend back home, and she’s a slayer. Big Bad is what we call whatever demon, or vampire is currently making our lives hell.”
“Right then,” he still wasn’t sure he understood everything she’d said, but he did know what a slayer was and was impressed that she knew one. “So then, you’re going to research what would be needed for this project?”
“Yeah, I’ll head to the library after Transfiguration,” Willow agreed, “I’ll have a list ready for you when we have class on Wednesday then we can work on composing the paper.”
“Fine, I’ll also work on list and we can compare notes in class.”
Severus then recommended several books she should find that could contain the necessary information and Willow was just finishing writing down the last of them when the Professor dismissed them. As she gathered her things and headed for the door she saw Sirius standing across the hall. He was leaning on the wall, twirling his wand through is fingers, stopping occasionally to flirt with the girls leaving the room.
“Hi,” he said pushing off the wall as Willow came through the door, “Thought I’d walk you to lunch, don’t want you to get lost.”
“Thanks,” Willow smiled as he draped his arm around her shoulder, “Probably could’ve managed though.”
“So was Potions just horrendous?” He asked ignoring her comment.
“Not really, we just have this project to work on with a partner.”
“Who are you working with?” he asked, naming several Gryffindors he had seen coming from the room.
“Severus Snape.”
“You have to work with Snivellus?” He said laughing as they approached the great hall. “I’m sorry; no one should have to work with that greasy git.”
“He didn’t seem that bad,” Willow said pulling away slightly, as a former school punching bag she didn’t like the attitude Sirius had toward the other boy.
“I guess,” he said, seeing Willow’s obvious disapproval, “I shouldn’t have insulted him.”
“Whatever,” Willow shrugged, “I don’t want to get involved in whatever it is between you, James, and Severus okay.”
“Right,” he agreed as he took the seat next to her and Lily, James and Remus came in and joined them at the table. “So then let’s talk about something else.”
“Well, she still hasn’t told us about living on a Hellmouth,” James suggested as he began piling his plate with food.
“Okay you guys win, I’ll tell you about Sunnydale,” Willow smiled and began telling them about all the things she had encountered since meeting Buffy.
