  • If you buy Serenity on DVD at EzyDVD, you will receive (over the counter) an exclusive Tin
  • Not a packaging option, but if you buy Serenity on DVD at Sanity, you will receive an exclusive Serenity Mouse Mat for FREE!

Equality Now Charity Thanks Whedon Fans

Joss Whedon's Favourite Charity, Equality Now, have posted on Whedonesque thanking Joss and his fans for their support. Here's what they said:

On behalf of Equality Now, I am writing to say a huge THANKS to all of you for supporting our work to end violence and discrimination against women around the world!! Jessica and I had a great time at the Flanvention last weekend - your enthusiasm and generosity are deeply touching. As Equality Now is an organization that believes that anyone anywhere can do something to help, we are very aware of the power of individuals coming together to work for a common goal. Your power is staggering! We hope that some day the dream of equality will be as real for all of us as it is in Buffy and in Firefly, and all of you give us great hope that this day will come. Special thanks to the cast for all their generosity, and special thanks to Nathan and Joss for believing in our work and encouraging you to support it. There are many ways you can help in addition to giving us much needed funding - check out our website at www.equalitynow.org. Love to all of you from Jessica and the rest of the staff of Equality Now.

Serenity Opens at Number 5 at the German Box Office

Premiering on 24th November, Serenity opened at number 5 in the German Box Office Charts. Not bad considering the movies it was up against were the lastest Harry Potter, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and In Her shoes. In a small victory for the browncoats though, Serenity did place above Flightplan, the movie that kept it off the top spot in America.

Joss Whedon's Letter Included in Buffy Complete DVD

Those of you who are the proud owners of the Buffy Complete Series DVD Box set will also know the contents of this letter. But for those of you who aren't lucky owners, here's Joss Whedon's letter to the fans:

Well, here you have it. All of it. Seven years of painstaking work, of pain and creation, of wit, confusion, strength, compromise and achievement... of me, dreaming of nightmares.

To say that Buffy has been the greatest, most difficult and rewarding experience of my career thus far would actually be to undersell its significance. It represents the best work (again, so far) of so many talented people I can’t possibly name them all here. David Greenwalt and Marti Noxon, who ran the show with me are more responsible for its shape and terrible beauty than I ever intend to give them credit for, do spring to mind. But so many great writers, actors and crew labored beyond the beyond to make this show happen that it extended, as true art does, beyond my reach. This show ran me, not the other way around. It told me what to say, what to show, when to give comfort and when to draw blood. This show, seven years of it, is a living thing. Put it on your shelf, and go to bed. It’ll whisper to you in your sleep.

Good work UK Browncoats, Serenity has knocked Pride & Prejudice off the number one spot at the UK Box Office for the weekend. This is the best Box Office result for Serenity in all the countries that it has been released. Jewel Staite updates her Dear Roj blog

Jewel Staite has updated her blog with her thoughts on Serenity's Opening weekend. Here's what she said:

Dear Roj

So, it’s happened: Serenity has made it’s debut. The first weekend is over. I dragged nearly everyone I knew to it and made them sit through it, no bathroom breaks allowed-they might miss important plot points and sweet fight sequences! And some of them even went to see it again, and again, and then again (and no, I’m not counting my parents, here, because they’re already asking me for their own personal copy of the DVD and poster and role playing book-I REALLY hope my Dad doesn’t want to play Inara). Yes, my family and my friends are devoted and very proud of even the silliest of things that I do, but I knew by their slightly sheepish faces on being caught with not one, not two, but THREE Serenity movie passes in their wallets on only the third day of it opening that they loved this movie.

I am so pleased by this. I’ve always vowed to never get too close to a project and to never, ever fall in love with it, but I did that with Firefly, and I did it again with Serenity. I couldn’t help it. It’s special to me. It stands out. And to know that it stands out for other people too, people that love it because it’s intelligent and funny and so original, it makes me happier than anything. Joss is right when he says that none of the usual industry rules apply to this movie, because they really don’t. There’s no predicting what will happen. We don’t know what’s coming, and we don’t know what our ultimate fate will be. It’s virtually impossible to know. We are different. We always have been. It’s just what makes us even more special.

Above all else, we opened this weekend to the tune of 10.1 million dollars, and we’re the number one "new" movie in the country. That says a ton. I know my theatre was packed to the brim with browncoats, and when I see it again this weekend coming up, I know it will be the same, because you don’t give up. We have something that bikini-clad treasure-hunting Paul Walker-kissing peeps don’t, and that’s the most dedicated, most wonderful fan base in the world. (know how good that feels?)

It’s of course, far from over. The second weekend means even more than the first. We need this film to stay in theatres for as long as possible to give ourselves the opportunity to make some cash so we can keep going, keep flying, and keep making movies. And those people saying shitty things, saying that you don’t matter and that it’s over? They don’t get it. No big deal. Ignore that kind of stuff. There are NO RULES here. No accurate predictions. Anything is possible. Just know that everything you do, every ten bucks you spend on a ticket, every friend you bring to the theatre with you, all of it helps. Lets show them how mighty we can be.

I am so proud.

Jewel

PS If you’re reading this Dad, I was just kidding. You can play Inara. Just not Kaylee, k?

The cast of Serenity Will Answer Your Questions

First Joss answered your questions, now some of the cast will take time out of their busy schedules to answer your questions through Whedon's World. Email your questions to Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Gina Torres (Zoe), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Sean Maher (Simon) or Summer Glau (River) or indeed to all five to cider@whedonsworld.com

Joss Whedon Posts on Serenity Opening

Serenity opening weekend has been and gone (for the US, Canada & Australia), but next weekend is just as important. Here's what Joss posted right before the weekend.

"Well boys and girls and boys dressed as girls and girls dressed as Kaylee, the time is almost upon us. This Friday we take that old rust-bucket out of the shipyard and see if she can breach atmo. It’s been a long (to paraphrase a band I like) strange trip, and it’ll be nice finally to show everybody what it is we’ve been tinkering with all this time. You already know you have my thanks, from the hardcore fans to the softcore... fans.... let me try that again. From the people manning the booths, buying DVD sets for their friends, getting banners seen everywhere on Australian TV, raffling artwork for ticketholders (Adam Hughes, take a bow), to the most casual fan who just wants to see the flick and won’t ever even read this. You guys are the fuel in the engine, the Fire in the Fly, the weird green stuff coming out of Serenity’s butt. (Hmmm. Forget that last one. I’m a little bit out of control here.)

Everyone needs something to keep them going. Mal has his ship. Zoe has her integrity. Jayne has Vera. And I’ve got you guys.

So what now? There have been so many posts about seeing it, seeing it again, the first weekend, the second weekend, being enthusiastic without being obnoxious (and yes, it IS hard to see over the pom-pom of a Jayne hat), buying tickets in advance, making a noise... I honestly wouldn’t know what to add. I can tell you this: the movie will play in about 2200 hundred theaters, which is a good number. Too many, and you get empty theaters with no energy — not enough, and you get, well, not enough. It may be hard to find in some areas but it’ll be out there. Leave no multiplex unturned! This is going to be a ground war, peeps — we have to hold the valley for a long while. However it opens, it needs to HOLD. Instead of the Alliance we’ll be fighting viewer apathy, fear of something new, the urge to wait for DVD, and Jessica Alba in a bikini. (Although I have it on good authority that she spends 90% of the film in a huge wooly parka. Make sure that gets out.)

The day this puppy opens, I’ll be seeing it with my family (don’t worry, there’s a lot of them, and they’re all paying) and then I’m off to Europe to learn the word ’Browncoats’ in nine different languages — ’cause like I said, it’s all about holding. I’ll never be far from a computer, though, so I can check in with y’all. Thanks for every damn thing.

And remember, amidst all the urgency to make this an event, all the work and the worry, to take two hours and just enjoy yourself. That is, after all, what all this fighting’s about."

And he's what he said on after the weekend:

"Post subject: Worst. Movie. Ever.

was probably "Summer Holiday" with Mickey Rooney. Can you believe that kid was the biggest star in the world? Funny world.

Meanwhile, I’m just rounding out the weekend with a little praise for my dear peeps. Considering everything we’ve had to overcome, this is an extraordinary achievment. And you guys have been in the front lines. I lurk, I know all. So thanks. Some of you might know that this flick means more than a little to me.

Yes, the second weekend will tell all, as we’ve always known. I’m not here to push you guys — you push yourselves way harder than I could anyway. I’m just trying to figure out how to get the message out to the guys that aren’t you, that don’t know any of you, and that don’t run into someone who saw the film. I’ll be hounding the extremely patient Uni execs on that very subject. Like the lady said, "People have to know".

It’s not that there HAS to be a sequel. It’s just that I’ve got so many IDEAS..."

Keep going to see that movie folks. And for those of you, like me, who are in the UK, the fun starts on Thursday.

Joss Answers Your Questions

Remember we (and other websites) offered you the chance to ask Joss a question - well he has taken the time out of his busy schedule to answer some of those questions and here they are:

Questions from : www.whedon.info

Have you ever had writer's block? How'd you overcome it?
Lots. The trick is to walk away, either to another script or to some good old mindless veging out. The other trick is not to give up right away 'cause you're lazy and you wanna play. But if it ain't comin', it ain't.

If you knew you were going to spend the next 10 years on a desert island and could only take 5 books with you, which books would you take? (excluding "How to Survive on a Desert Island" and "Raft Building for Fun and Profit" ;-)
Assuming they're books I've already read:
1) A Little Princess
2) Dombey and Son
3) Dune
4) Hitchcock by Truffaut
5) Pride and Prejudice

What is Inara's secret? What's the black liquid in that vial she had?
Nice try.

Why is it that in most of your stories the most powerful or mythical characters are females ?
I likes 'em. My interest in women is mainly their strength. My interest in men is mainly their flaws. I realize both have both, but that's how it falls out. It's an identification with Otherness -- call it Cinematic Drag.

Joss, I was lucky enough to be at the premiere in Edinburgh. What were your impressions of the event?
Edinburgh was wonderful -- beautiful city, happy fans, and most of my dear peeps about. And I even liked the haggis, Sam I Am.

Any chance of us seeing another instalment of 'Firefly' as a TV series? I'm thrilled about the movie, but I need more!
Hard to say. The Movie has to be a hit before these questions become relevant.

Joss, first of all, thank you for everything you have contributed to TV and movies!!! My question is, what was the biggest stumbling block with Serenity, and how did you overcome it? (Example, not given a big enough budget, not allowed to do a certain fight scene, or whatever.)
Writing the damn thing. Hardest structure ever.

My question is this: do you enjoy coming up with names for the characters and places in the Firefly 'Verse. It seems that you put a lot of thought and meaning into the names you choose. What do you use as inspiration? Literature, other films, music etc or other sources?
I love naming, and it's VERY hard. Planets, I usually take from mythology or literature (or old names or translations) but personal names carry so much weight -- I've often been blocked for DAYS on a script because I don't have one characters name and I can't write without it. It has to sound like them, embody them.

While filming Serenity were there any moments when you all cracked up laughing because of something hilariously funny? If there was can you say what happened?
Having Nathan around means I cracked up every day. No anecdotes, though -- we had a schedule to keep!

What has made you so interested in the Sci-Fi/Paranormal genre? What about the genre makes you retain your interest?
Sci-fi is another world, and have you taken a look at this one lately?

Questions from : www.whedonesque.com

Watching the movie, I could not tell if any stunt men/women were used in the action sequences. There must have been, but it didn't show. How much of the fighting scenes that involve River was done by Summer Glau herself?
Summer did almost everything (save two wire gags) herself. She was my secret weapon -- best action hero in this country. Nathan and Chewitel also did most of theirs. Lotta bored stunt doubles!

Joss, which of the nine people on Serenity do you most identify with and why?
Worf, 'cause he's leathery but gentle.

Questions from : www.destinything.com

First all, a big thank you to everyone involved for taking the time to include webmasters in the promotion of Serenity. It's great to be able to give something back to Joss after so many years of entertainment! With regards my question, whilst reading an extract of the "Serenity" novel, I was struck by a line claiming that River was particularly afraid of a certain crew member. This got me wondering how much involvement you have with novelisations. Do you provide specific background details such as this and, on a similar note, has there ever been a proposed plot development in a "Buffy" or "Angel" novel where you've had to put your foot down?
I don't have much involvement. I just don't have time. If I started to read them I'd just get frustrated and have to write them myself. This would cause fewer movies and shows. I just whistle and look the other way. Hope ya like 'em!

Questions from : wwwm.morenabaccarin.net

The whole cast have been excellent at promoting Serenity, often travelling large distances to attend events; how does their enthusiasm and commitment compare to those of other projects you've been involved in?
Nothing compares to the work these guys have done promoting the film -- and nothing is nicer than flying to a faraway land to find yourself surrounded by good friends who are all wicked pretty. It should always be like this.

Questions from : www.geocites.com/leafanone/allaboutadambaldwin.htm

Joss, why did you avoid letting Jayne and The Operative go at it (fight I mean) in Serenity? Jayne for president!
You totally gave away the sequel! (The president thing, I mean. Jayne would never fight the Operative -- they are timid men.)

Questions from : www.browncoatevents.com

Hey Joss, I've heard lots about the now famous Shakespeare readings at your house. I wondered if you would ever consider directing a stage play (Shakespeare or anything else) and if so which play would you choose and who would be your dream actors to play the main roles?
I wouldn't hate doing "Much Ado" with Amy and Alexis...

Questions from : http://nathan-fillion.net/badinlatin/

Do you have a fascination with feet (and if so, why?), or, why do you have so many shots of feet in the movie?
Sigh... see, Summer's a dancer, and she acts from the ground up. In Objects in Space, the physical connection between her and the ship was key, and it became a motif... maybe that's all just rationalization for something darker, but how dark can it be? It's feet!

What did the two animal handlers mentioned on the end titles of Serenity contribute to the filming process?
They kept it real, bro'.

Questions from : wwww.buffy.com.au

Given your position at the moment, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Is motion picture greatness where you wish to be?
And TV greatness, and Broadway greatness, and chocolately goodness... I want it all. But honestly, rehab.

You've made an extensive effort to spend some quality time with your fans in Australia, what with the pub visit on the Sunday to the Q&A sessions on Monday and Tuesday evenings just gone. Is this something that you're prepared to do if that is what it takes to ride a continual wave of success or is this more in your own mantra to recognise the fans for their support and as such give something back.
I had a free day. When you tour, you're supposed to talk to the press (and hoo doggy did I) but you wanna see your peeps, and not just for the length of your name signing. I couldn't do it every night (raging ego/hangover) but it's nice when I can.

Australian Serenity OPening Night Box Office Figures

The Australian Official Serenity Site have confirmed that the Box Office Figures for Opening Night are as follows:
Box Office took $280,763.
Serenity placed 5th on the national box office chart for that day behind all the school holiday features. It being school holidays in Australia this is to be expected. However, it was the highest place of all non family films and of all the films that opened that night. Also, out of all the films in the top 20, Serenity had the highest per screen average.

Serenity opens tonight in the USA & Canada and I know I can't wait to see what happens there.

Whedon to Write and Direct new Universal Film

Not content with having Wonder Woman and a Spike movie on his hands, Joss Whedon has been given the green light by Universal to write and direct a new film, 'Goners' based on a spec script he has written. He has apparently been given a 7 figure budget for the fantasy thriller he has described as "the story of a young woman’s journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics." JOss went on to say, "It’s certainly darker than ’Serenity,’ and there are a lot of left turns along the way. It is something I had in mind for a while, and it just poured out of me when I finished my film."

Save The Ariel Ambulance

Remember the ambulance built from scrap in the Firefly episode 'Ariel'? Well, as some of you may already know, the prop was located in a scrap yard in the Mojave Desert. Ever since it's find, Browncoats Akin and Adam have been hard at work to locate the owners of the yard. They have been succesful and have obtained a price for the ambulance. All they need to do now is raise the money required to buy and transport the ambulance ($4000.00) and find a home for it. In order to do this a yahoo group has been set up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ArielAmbulance/. The aim is to place the ambulance in a museum where it could be shared with Browncoats everywhere. Should anything go wrong and they are unable to obtain the ambulance any money raised will go to Joss' charity of choice Equality Now. Join up now and help save a piece of TV history in whatever way you can.

Joss Whedon Invites Browncoats To Join Him In Sydney

Joss has arrived in Australia and, in a post on SerenityOz, has invited Browncoats to join him out on the town. Here's what her said:

Post subject: Fire: bad. Joss: Foamy.

Hello there.

So I’m here in Sydney and tomorrow I’ve a monstrous bunch of yakking to do, press and all that, a screening — you guys know the drill. But today, being as that I’m footloose and fancy free, I thought it might be fun to sit down with a few peeps over a foamy beer and be a little less structured. I’m staying near the Orient, which is in the Rocks, so around 5:00 pm I figure to wander down there and hoist a few (just a few). If you’re free and bored swing by. I’ll be the one with the white carnation and a copy of "War and Peace". (That might be not true.) I’ll be the one that looks like Joss, only more tired. (Wait, I always look tired. Maybe I better bring "War and Peace" after all.)

So I looked at the badges of the customs officials at the airport and thought, "What a coincidence. They’re both named SYD." Yeah, I’m that guy.

See you (?) later, -joss.

Empireonline Offer Free Screening of 'Mystery Film' - Possibly Serenity

Empireonline.co.uk are offering a free screening of a 'Mystery Film' in 20 cities acroos the UK. From the description of the film it sounds very likely that this film could be Serenity, although, of course, we can't be certain. Here's how to get a ticket:

"We can't tell you what this month's reader's screening is. UIP, who have kindly agreed to give us one of their top films, have done so on the condition that we don't let you know what it is. All we can say is that it's fab, and that you're going to want to mosey on down to your nearest Vue cinema as soon as possible, clutching the attached voucher in your hot hands and exchange it for a shiny new pair of tickets to the mystery film – and we're not telling you what it is, no matter how hard you beg!

Now thanks to our friends at UIP / Universal Pictures and Vue Cinemas, you can see it first – and for free!

How To Get Your Tickets - You can see this surprise film (cert. 15) first, some time before it opens, and for free, on September 19, at the Vue cinemas listed below, at 6 for 6.30pm. Tickets can be collected at participating Vue cinemas from Monday September 12. As ever, demand for tickets is likely to be high, so do get there early. The New England Browncoats have set up a charity donation site in aid of the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief fund. They initially set up a goal of $500, however that goal was soon reached and browncoats were still giving. The current target is $5000.00. Please give what you can.

"Count me in.

I hereby officially volunteer to donate all 90% (10% covers agents’ expenses) of money collected at my Dragon-Con "Walk of Fame" signing session to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Please come by and get a signed photo or two (or more), and know that the contribution will be given, in the name of Browncoats and FF/Serenity fans everywhere, to the specific charity this here thread deems the most effective at directly helping those in dire need.

May our hearts, prayers and assistance now go out to those suffering from the devastation of this catastrophic Hurricane.

Win Free Tickets to See Serenity with Chud.com

Chud.com are offering the chance to win tickets to see Serenity in Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, Greenville or Nashville USA. Here's what to do:

"Grab an envelope and address it to yourself. Put a fresh stamp on it. FOLD IT (moisture in the delivery has pre-sealed many of the unfolded SASE’s) and pop it into an envelope addressed to CHUD.com at 4915 Camberbridge Dr. Alpharetta, GA 30022. Stamp it. Then do this important thing:

Write the city you are seeing it in and draw a picture of a spaceship.

Then mail that sucker and if you get it here in time and good things happen (they usually do), a pass for two will hurl itself back through the mail to your home. A few tips, as we’ve had about 10 of these get wasted during the process.

Don’t forget to put a self addressed envelope inside. A lot of people put a piece of paper with their address and expect me to do the rest. Some seal the internal envelope. Others forget a stamp. Many disregard my request to lis tyour city and the wrong passes are sent.

Lastly and most importantly...

If you get a pass and go to the theater, be loud. Be positive. Be energetic. And if you like the movie, spread the word. Serenity needs your help.

Joss Posts on Serenity Tagline and Confirms He Will Be Visiting Australia

Joss posted at the Official Serenity movie site yesterday and confirmed, among other things, his love for Carmon on Ice and his forthcoming visit to Australia. Here's what he said:

"Jossimablogification

Just dropping by to say ’hey’, maybe throw out a few behind-the-scenes tidbits to make you feel all special and tingly. Okay I can’t sleep. But I still might have a tidbit, we’ll see.

The marketing blitz is poised to begin. Hopefully it will be a blitz and not a tiny police action. Marketing is a very tricky business, as I’ve learned. Coming up with the tagline, "The Future is Worth Fighting For", was not a simple process. A couple of close contenders:

"The Future is worth Running Away From."

"The Future is All Visual and S---."

"One Captain. One Psychic. One Assasin. One Doctor. One Shepherd. Another Assasin, but different from the first. One Mechanic. One Companion, which is like a geisha or a courtesan, I guess sort of. One... um... did I do Mechanic? Which movie is this?"

"If you loved Katerina Witt in ’Carmen on Ice’, you’ll love this."

"Mal Takes His Shirt Off Already."

"Serenity. It’s like art, but in movie form."

"Get Ready For Rush Hour."

Now, clearly all good notions, but each lacking that one crucial element. I think we went the right way.

Gettin’ ready fro my trip to Edinburgh. Just one burning question: Is Sargent’s "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw" still hanging in the National Gallery? I’m excited about the film and all, but... if anyone in Scottishville can get me the 411 (that’s American slang for "four one one"), I’d be grateful. I loves me some Lady Agnew.

Oh, and come early September, I’ll be making another short jaunt -- and finally get to hang with my Aussie peeps! I’m hitting Sydney and Melbourne! Not for more than a day each, but it’s still my first time and I’m psyched! (See, I told you ther’d be some info if you hung around long enough.) I expect a proper Australian welcome, unless a proper Australian welcome involves paddling of any kind.

Well, back to attempt sleep. Keep fighting, and ignore Movieline and the Hollywood Stock Exchange. We make our destiny, peeps. you all know that better than anyone.

Yours (finally!) sleepily, The Man They Call Joss.

And, to be perhaps a little too honest even for you my dear peeps... I kind of did love ’Carmen on Ice’. Go figure."

Joss Posts About Veronica Mars

Joss just loves Veronica - so much so he couldn't help but post on Whedonesque about it.

Joss Luvs Veronica.

This is my attempt at posting my own thread. My peeps and I just finished a crazed Veronica Marsathon, and I can no longer restrain myself. Best. Show. Ever. Seriously, I’ve never gotten more wrapped up in a show I wasn’t making, and maybe even more than those. Crazy crisp dialogue. Incredibly tight plotting. Big emotion, I mean BIG, and charsimatic actors and I was just DYING from the mystery and the relationships and PAIN, this show knows from pain and no, I don’t care, laugh all you want, I had to share this. These guys know what they’re doing on a level that intimidates me. It’s the Harry Potter of shows. There. I said it. People should do whatever they can to check out this first season so the second won’t be a spoiler fest. I’m nutty.

I’m a little calmer now. Oh God, no I’m not! Wait. Wait. Okay. Some of you may already be all up on this, and some may disagree, but I’m urging peeps to check it out, ’cause there is great TV afoot, and who doesn’t want that? Thank you for your time.

Still not calm! Wait... wait...

Joss Whedon's Australian Screen Speech

Well the Australian pre-screenings have been going down a storm - he's Joss' welcome message.

"Hi. This is Joss Whedon. If you’re sitting here, you’re about to watch my first ever movie, Serenity... unless you’re facing the other way, in which case i’m not sure why you’re here but you might need to talk to somebody, maybe a professional. But if you’re one of the people actually facing the screen, then let me just say welcome. I created a world -- well, I had a lot of help, but this is MY letter so i’m taking the credit -- and you’re about to enter it. I hope you like living there as much as I have. Serenity is a very personal work with political resonance and a heartfelt message about the human condition and stuff blowing up. ’Cause let’s face it, nobody cares about that ’human condition’ stuff... in fact if you notice it, try to keep it to yourself. Just tell people about the stuff blowing up, so they’ll see the movie too. Thanks!

The fact is, i’m very proud of this movie and everyone in it. I’m excited to show you what we’ve done. And the best way I can do that is to shut up already. Enjoy.

Joss Whedon."
