Wonder Woman News (27 July 2006)

Joel Silver, exeutive producer of the new Wonder Woman film, has been talking about the film at the recent San Diego Comic Con. According to iF Magazine, he had the following to say:

"Joss is getting closer on the script. When we have a good script we all like, at that point the studio will agree to make it and we’ll go from there. He’s doing a good job. He’s utilizing the lore of the material and it’s an origin story, so you’re dealing with the origin of the story. He’s a very talented writer and he has a great story and ideas and moving our way toward making the movie and maybe next year we can start talking about the movie here."

"It’s finding the kind of movie that will appeal to everyone. It has to work , and it has to have a good character in WONDER WOMAN and be clever and it has to draw you in. Of these three [D.C.] characters. Superman is an alien, Batman is a tough guy and Wonder Woman is a goddess, so you have to work your way through the process."

Speaking of the much rumoured casting, he had this to say:

"She’s young, I don’t think it can be someone you’ve heard of. Once we have the template of the girl, we’ll be able to find her."

Speaking to Comingsoon.net/Superherohype.com, Joel elaborated on why he chose Wonder Woman and why he chose Joss Whedon.

"It was after I made 'The Matrix' when I saw the response of the first tests and I realized the Trinity character was the highest-tested character. This was before they had done 'Charlie's Angels' or 'Elektra' or any of these movies, and I thought, 'Let's just go out and try to make Wonder Woman work,' and I could never find a script that I liked, but we're close now."

And of Joss he said "I just thought he would be the perfect guy to write it. I love Buffy and he's a great writer. I sat down with him and asked if he'd do it, and he wrote me a note where he passed, and in the note, he explained what the movie had to be. There was no way I was going to let him pass, so I hammered him until he said, 'Yes.'"

He went on to confirm: "It's the origin story. It has mythology. Steve Trevor crashes on the island and they go back to Man's World."

And again with the casting: "We have a script and we know where we're going. She'll probably be someone you never saw before, because she's very young, but I think we'll have a good time with it."

Finally, speaking with Empire Online he says: “It’s real, but it’s not real yet. Joss has done a great job on the draft and now he’s tweaking it a little bit so we can give it to the studio in two weeks. And if they believe in it in the way that we think they will, then we’ll be talking about that movie next year.”

So to sum up, the script is almost done, the girl that gets to play Wonder Gal will be a young unknown and they'll probably be making the film next year. Not much given away then really.

Joss Whedon To Receive Space Frontier Foundation Award For Serenity (12 June 2006)

The Space Frontier Foundation have annouced they will be giving awards to several notable projects and individual at the New Space 2006 Conference 21st July 2006 in Las Vegas. Joss Whedon will be given a Vision of the Future award for his work as writer and director of Serenity. The award is given to "a fictional program or movie which portrays a human future in space that has elements which are inspiring, possible, and at least attempts to work within the realm of physics". Speaking of the reasons for giving the award, Foundation Funder Rick Tumlinson said, "Serenity and Firefly are the first new hard science fiction film and TV show in years to acknowledge an economic system, and even give a nod to the reality of space. From its portrayal of a civilization based on terraforming and free trade, to its multi-cultural aspects, it shows a possible future within which its characters go about the usual drama, comedy and skullduggery of any civilization anytime. Add to it the fact the space scenes take place in silence (the scientifically correct way things happen in space) and you have a winner in our books. We want the show back on the air!"

Not Fade Away Spike Movie Campaign (22 May 2006)

Ever since Tim Minear let slip that a Spike Movie could be in the works, fans have been eager for more news and rumours have been circulating. MOst recently Joss Whedon has said that he has done all the pitching that he can do and Amy Acker recently told fans at the Not Fade Away convention that, 'it's safe to say that's [Spike Movie] not happening any more, cause if they were, they'd be getting done right now." She went on to say, 'There was supposed to be three of them - one for Spike, a Faith one and also one for Willow. I think it's safe to say that now because it's not going to happen.'

Whedonverse fans, however, have never been ones to let the words 'no', 'not' or 'cancel' stand in their way, and so comes the next fan campaign to keep the Buffyverse alive. Not Fade Away is a campaign run by Support Spike.com to postcard Fox and let them know we still care. For full details on how you can join in go to www.supportspike.com.

Joss Whedon talks Comics (10 May 2006)

Joss Whedon recently attended the Saturn awards to accept an award on behalf of Summer Glau and spoke to iF Magazine about his forthcoming comic projects. Here's what he said:

I plan to leave fans with a mind-blowing annual after the 24th issue of Astonishing X-Men because that will be when John [Cassaday] and I leave. Everything that I have done and everything that I am going to do is all leading up to one big climax. If I don’t blow some minds with it, then I did the thing called ‘failing’.

“Let me put it this way, I told Cassaday what I had thought of for the second year. His exact words because he was so busy and didn’t have time to draw it were ‘F—k you!’ and the next day we made the deal.”

Moving on to Buffy and Serenity he said, “Comics Buffy and Serenity at Dark Horse are a yes. Brett Mathews is waiting for me to get off my butt, and we’ve been working on another outline for a three-part Serenity story. I’ve written the first issue of Buffy and we’re waiting for the artist to get free, and then that’s going to be in four-issue arcs that are going to take us over several issues. I’m going to try and dragoon several very talented writers into doing their own arcs inside of that. Serenity will be a prequel story to the movie; it will be during the Firefly days.

Joss Whedon talks Wonder Woman (3 May 2006)

Joss Whedon recently spoke to Sci-Fi Wire at the Saturn Awards and confirmed that he had turned in a draft script for Wonder Woman to the producers who had returned it with the usual notes."I did [turn it in] to the producers, not to the studio yet," Whedon commented, "I'm working on revisions now. ... It's business as usual. I'm writing and that's all." When asked about a possible start date for filming, he said, "You know, they have to tell me that. And until I actually give it to the studio, I can't [say]. This is taking longer to write than things usually do, and there's some reasons for that. Not all of them are my incredible incompetence. But some of them are. But the script is coming together in a way that's actually even surprising me, so I'm pretty excited. So we'll just have to wait."

Speaking to iF Magazine at the same event he said, “It’s sort of shifting under me. "I’m doing more rewriting on this than I am used to. Finding her was fun, and finding the structure of the film was incredibly difficult and fun. I am not bringing in any villains that anyone knows. I will not be bringing in any of the rogues gallery from the comic book. The villain is original to the film.”

Buffy Vs Batman (23 March 2006)

Ugo.com have been pitting superheros against superheros and villains against villians in a vote that will lead to the best superhero competing with the baddest villian. Buffy is in the running and one of the contests brought her face to face with Batman. Joss Whedon himself had some comments on this battle. Here's what he said:

"I’ve been planning to write this match-up for years. I know EXACTLY how the fight would go. But I need someone to draw it first. (And a leeetle free time. And two rival companies to sign off on it.)

Honestly, I don’t understand how there are people who HAVEN’T thought about this for years. They’re called PRIORITIES, people...

p>And both characters have extensive, almost ridiculously large scoobyposses. This will not affect the outcome of the fight, it just means Willow can spend some time crushing on Oracle.

Good times...

joss | March 16, 17:13 CET"

The Ariel Ambulance Needs You (19 February 2006)

As many of you will know, the Ambulance used in the Firefly episode 'Ariel' was located last year in a scrap yard. Browncoats have been plotting and at last we have the funds (donated by one very mighty Browncoat) to buy the ambulance from the scrap yard owner and it will shortly belong to the Browncoats. The Prop Store of London have very kindly donated some props to go with the ambulance and the plan is to show it various conventions, museums and anywhere that will have it. Of course, buying the ambulance is only the first step. Volunteers are needed to help with restoration, transport, word-spreading and of course, funds are still required to help with the maintenance and transportation. Although the organisation are grateful for your dollars, they understand that not everyone can spare the cashy money and there are so many other ways that you can help. For details on how you can help join the Yahoo Group. You can also add yourself to the map to show where you are and how you can help. The map also shows the locations of prospective conventions/museums and confirmed ambulance stops.

A website has been set up by a production company, Cine Support International, claiming to be going through 'official channels' to obtain the rights to Firefly from Fox and to start production of Season 2 which would be offered to cable or on demand channals. I would ask that, before you all get too excited about this project or dismiss it entirely, you read the discussion threads on Whedonesque and Serenitymovie.org which include the arguments for and against and posts from the man responsible for this website. When you have done that you can make up your own minds as to whether this is a viable project or not. The website in question is www.fireflyseason2.com.

Official Browncoats Board Closed (5 January 2006)

The Official Universal Browncoats Board has closed with effect from 3 January 2006. In a email sent to all members, Serenity Leader had the following to say:

Browncoats to Close 01.03.06

Sadly, the time has come for this site to close down. We have been through a lot together over the past year and a half, and it is with great sadness that I post this message. Please redeem all of your points in the store if you have not already, as they will do you no good after the site closes down. Gossi has set up a near identical forum at www.serenitymovie.org, so The Browncoats will continue there. Thanks to each and every one of you for making this site, and Serenity such a huge success.

Keep Flyin’!

S_L

Another webiste has been set up by a dedicated browncoat, Guidebook to the Verse is an archive for all things Firefly and Serenity. Including old posts by our Big Damn Heros, videos, pictures and articles that were contained on the old Universal site. If you have anything to submit, check out the website and email the webmaster
