"Somnambulist"

Written by: Tim Minear Original Air Date: January 18, 2000

A woman is attacked
It's night, a young woman is running frantically trying to escape from something that's pursuing her. As she comes around a corner, she runs into a man. He grabs her. We see a flash of fangs. With a sharp, metal implement on the tip of his thumb, he carves the shape of a cross into her cheek. He then sinks his fangs into her neck, feeds on her and drops her body to the ground.
the face of the attackerAngel awakens from the nightmare
The vampire looks upward and for the first time, we see his face. It's Angel, who morphs from game face back into his human visage.

Angel is in his apartment, in bed. He wakes with a start and bolts upright. He sits on the edge of the bed, clearly disturbed by the dream that just woke him.

Kate examines the bodythe victim
Kate arrives at a crime scene, inspects the body of a young woman, the same one Angel saw killed in his dream. She looks at the bite marks and the marking on the girl's cheek. She notes that this is the third such killing. She expects there will be more.

Cordy rehearses with a non existent client
Cordelia is in the office alone, rehearsing for a potential client, should one show up.
Wes arrives
Wes enters the office, bringing with him some mail and a newspaper.

Cordelia wonders what he's doing there.

Wesley tells her he just wanted to exchange information with each other about their respective plans for potential future battles. He thinks it's useful for both sides to share information since they have a common goal. He also notes he brought in the mail and the newspaper.
Cordy wonders about Wesley's plans
Cordy thanks him for the mail and paper, then asks what his plans are for battling evil.

Wes doesn't really have an answer, given there's nothing going on at the moment.

Cordelia dismissively thanks him for dropping in.
Wes attempts small talk
Wes takes a seat across from Cordy's desk, he asks her how things are going on her end.

Cordy tells him she's been talking to a phantom client in an empty office, not much going on.
Wes reminds Cordy of past teamwork
Wes recalls their effectiveness as a team, referencing the victory over Barney ("Parting Gifts"), the empathy demon who tried to sell Cordelia's eyes to the highest bidder.
Cordy notices the mail belongs elsewhere
Cordelia notes that the mail Wes has brought in isn't theirs, it belongs to the dentist's office next to theirs.
Wes notices something in the paper
Wesley takes back the mail and newspaper, apologizing in the process. As he takes it from Cordy, something in the newspaper catches his attention and he suddenly gets quiet.

Cordelia notices the change and asks him if something is up.

Wes hears the elevator coming up from Angel's apartment and tells her he'd best get the mail to the right place.
Angel walks into the office
As Wesley leaves the office, Angel throws aside the elevator door, exits and enters the office, asking Cordy who she was talking to.
Cordy asks about the plate
She tells him Wes and goes on to ask about a follow-up on a license plate number they had.
Angel reminds Cordy what she was supposed to do
Angel walks over to the coffeemaker and finds it empty. He curtly reminds her she was the one who was supposed to follow up on the information.

Cordelia informs him she couldn't get anywhere with the DMV, since they don't give out information to just anyone who asks. She notices Angel is looking a little ragged and remarks on it.

Angel abruptly reminds her to work on the license plate info.
Cordy wonders if Angel is okay
Cordelia thinks he could have Kate run the plate, then asks Angel if he's all right. She's noticed he looks tired.

His annoyance with her is becoming apparent. He tells her he'll talk to Kate about the plate now.
Angel decides to take the tunnels
Cordy asks after him, he cuts her off and tells her he's fine. He heads out the door, right into a splash of sunlight. He pulls back in pain and mutters to Cordy that he'll use the tunnels.
Wes, lurking in the hall
Cordy walks across the office and closes the door, left open when Angel decided to take the tunnels.

Wesley has been lurking just outside the office, still holding the dentist's mail and newspaper. He watches Cordy close the office door then slips quietly down the hall, past the A.I. office.

Kate, Angel
At the police station, Kate agrees to run the license plate for Angel. She tells him she'll have the info for him by morning. She appreciates the distraction from the current case she's working on. Angel asks her about it.
Kate looks over some photos
Kate takes a seat at her desk where she looks over a photograph. She tells Angel this was the first victim, a volunteer crossing guard. She pulls up another picture as Angel looks over her shoulder, and identifies the victim as a 10th grade girl. She refers to another picture and tells him the victim was a 25 year old waitress. She says the only thing all of the victims had in common was what was done to them.
crime scene photos
An officer approaches and leaves a folder with Kate, identifying it as containing the crime scene photos she requested.
Angel's attention, riveted to the crime scene photos
Kate opens the folder and looks at the material inside as she tells Angel to stop by the next day, she'll have the info for him. She looks up at Angel whose focus seems riveted on the crime scene photos. He flashes back to the dream he had of the young woman being killed.
Kate thinks Angel is disturbed by the photos
Kate thinks he's disturbed by the violence of it. She tells him she's been working on a profile of the killer, it's been tough trying to get inside the skin of someone who's so twisted. She surmises by the cross carved into the cheek of the victims that the killer likely thinks he's on some mission from God.
Angel offers an opinion
Angel offers it's the opposite, the act is a mocking of God. When Kate looks at him curiously, he quickly adds that would be his guess, anyway.

A detective tells Kate they're ready for her. She turns back, starting to say something to Angel, only to notice he's already half way out of the office.

Kate gives a briefing
In the police briefing room, Kate is relating her profile of the killer. Her description eerily similar to Angelus/Angel's own existence and personality.

As she's talking, we see images of Angel walking the streets of LA.
Angel notices a young blondea blonde gets Angel's attention
He watches a young blonde woman chatting with a group of friends. In physique and hair style and color, she bears a resemblance to Buffy Summers. When the woman turns and Angel sees her face, he walks on past.

Kate concludes the killer is an attractive, charming loner who thinks of himself as superior and has probably recently lost a relationship that was important to him which could have been the catalyst for the killings. She thinks he's not new to killing, he's been doing it for quite some time and will likely continue to do it until he is stopped.

Cordy, startled by Wes
At the office, Cordelia collects her things and opens the door to leave, only to find Wesley about to enter. They startle each other. Wes rushes into the office and asks where Angel is.

Cordelia notices Wes is carrying a stake and points out it's kind of inconsiderate to come into a vampire's place with such a thing.
Wes shows Cordy the article
Wesley puts down a bag he was also carrying and pulls out some newspaper clippings collected in a folder. He tells Cordy that when the mix-up occurred with the mail, he saw something.

Cordy is upset that he cut up the dentist's newspaper.

Wes tries to get her to focus on the article.
Cordy doesn't care about the article
She reads it, notes a third body was recently found, and doesn't see the significance.

Wes tells her to notice the carving of the cross in the victim's cheek.

Cordy still doesn't know what he's getting at.
Wes presents his file
Wesley retrieves the article and suggests that Cordelia sit down. She takes a seat on the couch as Wes pulls a file folder from the bag as he recounts his experiences in researching Angelus while he was working for the Council. He felt it was a reasonable thing to do, given Angel's relationship with the Slayer.

Wes says he thought the carving of the cross in the cheek of the victims sounded familiar when he first read it. He went back to the research on Angelus and found his suspicions confirmed, that it was his custom to carve a Christian cross into the cheek of his victims, sort of a calling card.
Cordy hands the folder back
Cordy flips through the folder for a moment, then hands it back to Wes, telling him to leave. She doesn't want to hear these kinds of accusations against Angel.
Wes tries to convince Cordy
Wesley tries to talk to her, but she doesn't want to hear any of it. She tells him Angel is her friend now and there isn't anything Wes can say that will change that.

Angel has entered the office, startling Wesley. He tells Cordelia that Wes is right.

Cordy quickly offers to decapitate him if Wes stakes him.
Wes holds Angel at bay
As Angel walks further into the office, Wesley grabs a wooden cross and holds it out between Angel and himself, warning Angel not to come any closer.

Angel turns his head slightly from the cross and tells Wes he's not going to hurt anyone.

Wesley isn't so sure and demands to know why he should believe that.
Angel makes a point
With the reflexes of a cat on the hunt, Angel grabs Wesley by the arm and spins him around, clutching him by the neck. He tells Wes he should believe him because if he wanted to harm him, he could do it just that easily.

Wes is shocked by the swiftness of the move, and agrees to listen to what Angel has to say. Angel shoves him aside.
Angel doesn't remember killingCordy, not comforted
Angel says he doesn't remember doing any killing.

Cordelia doesn't exactly find that statement reassuring.

Angel moves to sit on the edge of the desk and tells the others that he's been having killing dreams. He explains that they are always alike, he sees himself stalking the victim, playing with them, carving the cross on them and finally feeding on them before they die of fright.

Cordelia observes that just because he's been having nightmares doesn't indicate he's responsible for what happened.
Angel admits he enjoyed the dreams
Angel corrects her, telling her they weren't nightmares. He enjoyed them.

Cordelia has nothing to say to that revelation.
Wes figures Angel thinks he might be guilty
Wes realizes that Angel thinks he may have killed in some kind of dream state, while sleepwalking.
Cordy doesn't think it's possible
Cordy doesn't think that's reasonable since one shaft of sunlight and he'd go up in flames.

Wes reminds her that all of the killings occurred before dawn.

Angel reckons there is only one way to know for sure if he's responsible.

Wes secures Angel to the bedCordy doesn't need the advice
Cordelia and Wesley are busy chaining Angel to his bed. Wes reminds Cordy to be sure the chains are tight enough.

She curtly replies that she doesn't need his advice.

Once Angel is securely chained down, Cordelia tells him that she's leaving. She doesn't want to be around him just in case there's more to these killing dreams than just dreaming.
Wes remains behind to keep watchAngel waits
Angel understands.

Wes remains behind to stay with Angel, awaiting whatever the night brings.

Flashback to the 1700's.
the young woman gets caught
A young woman is running down a cobblestone street in the dark of night. She frantically knocks on a door, there is no answer.
Angelus, pleased
She is grabbed and a metal tipped thumb is laid against her lips. A cross is carved into her cheek with the metal implement on the thumb tip. The vampire who attacked her feeds on her then drops her lifeless body to the ground.

Angelus is standing by, watching, pleased with the actions of his pupil who has just killed the girl.

Cordy shows Wes the paper
Angel, still chained to the bed, awakens with a start.

Wes is sitting in a chair at the foot of Angel's bed.
"Yes, I did."
Cordelia enters the apartment, carrying a newspaper. She excitedly tells Angel and Wes that there was another killing the night before, same M.O., so at least they know Angel didn't do it.

As Wes begins to unfasten the manacles holding Angel down, he pauses when Angel responds to Cordy's observation that he didn't do it with, "Yes, I did."

Flashback to the 1700's.
Penn
The vampire Angelus is proudly watching rises from his kill. He's a young man Angelus addresses as "Penn". Angelus congratulates him on a job well done for his first kill.
Angelus suggests a main course
Penn notes that the victim was his sister yet he felt nothing, only hunger.

Angelus suggests Penn share his newfound skills with the rest of his family because, "family blood is always the sweetest."

Penn adds a clippingPenn admires his clipping shrine
Penn is at his place, perusing newspaper clippings. He has numerous articles about the recent killings mounted on one wall. He adds another, then stands back, and takes a moment to appreciate his clippings shrine.

Angel reckons Penn is doing as he was taught
Back at Angel's apartment, he has apprised Wesley and Cordelia of his connection to Penn. He knows that Penn is doing just what his sire taught him.

Wes observes that he should be pretty accomplished by now, considering he's been practicing for over 200 years.

Angel doesn't know why Penn is doing it.
Wes wonders if Penn is trying to draw Angel out
Wes offers that perhaps he knows that Angel is in LA and this is his way of trying to draw him into the open. He wonders if the dreams are a part of that.
Cordy figures they don't have a good chance
Angel doesn't think so. He tells Wes he used to be connected to the vampires he sired as Angelus, but it meant nothing more than that they were close by.

Cordelia notes that they have no way of finding him then and the cops aren't going to have any better luck.

Angel decides he needs to talk to Kate Lockley about it since she has no idea what she's looking for or how to handle it if she finds it.
Wes isn't convinced it's a good idea
Wesley reminds him that it would be a bit awkward for him to go to the police station admitting knowledge of murders that have been committed without in some way implicating himself.

Angel is undeterred. He thinks Lockley is a capable cop who will eventually find Penn and he can use that to his own advantage.

Angel arrives at the police station
Angel enters the police station carrying a folded piece of paper.
Angel has things on this mind
Kate sees him and approaches him. She says she has the license plate info he wanted. She asks if he's okay then indulges in a not-so-subtle come on about how the brooding thing really works for him.

An obviously preoccupied Angel asks her if they can speak privately.

She agrees.

Angel looks at the crime photos
Angel and Kate enter a briefing room. Angel closes the door behind them and scans a crop of crime scene photos tacked to a bulletin board. He inquires about the progress of the investigation.

Kate tells him they aren't making any progress, there hasn't been much in the way of clues.
flashing back to Penn's dead family
Angel is focused on the photos. As he looks from victim to victim, he mentally flashes back, matching each victim with a member of Penn's family. He realizes Penn is reliving killing them.
Kate fingers her necklace
Kate fingers a cross necklace she's wearing as she asks what's going on. Angel subtly avoids looking at the necklace and asks if she trusts him. She says she does.
Angel posts a sketch of Penn
He unfolds the paper he's been carrying and tacks the sketch of a face to the bulletin board. He tells Kate that this is the man she is looking for.
Kate asks about the sketch
Kate wants to know how he knows this and where the picture came from.

Angel again asks if she trusts him.
Angel tells Kate what she needs to do
Kate still wants to know where he got his information, but she again tells him that she does trust him.

Angel tells her the killer's next victim will be a young male who will be taken off the streets in a non-affluent area, likely near a bar, and will be killed just like the others unless the police do everything in their power to stop him.

Angel returns to the car
Angel returns to his car in the underground parking garage beneath the police station. Wes is in the car, waiting for him.
Wes checks out the radio
Angel hands him a police radio he has brought back with him. He tells Wesley that when the police know something about Penn, they'll know too.

Wes asks where he got the radio.

Angel answers he took it from the station.

Kate give stakeout instructions
Kate briefs the cops on what to look for. Utilizing a map of the city, she directs them where to set up their patrols and reminds them to report anything that fits the profile of the killer's M.O.

kid, looking for trouble
Outside of a liquor store in a seedy part of town, a teen boy is accosting adults on the street, trying in vain to convince someone to buy beer for him. He's ignored.
Penn offers assistance
The kid then notices someone watching him and approaches the guy, asking him if he'd be willing to buy him some beer.
the cops check their sketch of Penn
Penn smiles at him.

A squad car pulls up across the street. The cops have a copy of the sketch Angel made of Penn. They watch as Penn leads the kid away.

Penn walks the kid down the streetthe kid realizes something isn't right
Penn and the boy are walking down a dark, deserted street. The kid is getting suspicious that Penn may not be taking him where he said he was.

Penn tells the boy he reminds him of his brother.

The kid impatiently tells him they're not going anywhere.
the kid gets bitthe cops arrive
Penn agrees and morphs into vamp face, grabs the kid and bites him just as a number of squad cars close in on them.

Penn looks up, his mouth bloody from feeding.
Penn is interrupted by the cops
The police yell for him to stop.

He drops the boy and tries to run in the opposite direction but is blocked by another squad car pulling to a stop. He leaps upward, through a boarded up window, into an abandoned warehouse.

Angel, Wes check out the scene
Angel and Wesley hear the call on the police radio in Angel's car. They note the address and head for the scene.
Kate, officer
An officer is telling Kate that the suspect went through the boarded up window, they have all means of exit covered. They're confident they will find him.
the boy is taken away
The boy Penn had bitten is being taken away on a gurney. He's obviously unnerved, but has survived.

Kate draws her gun and decides to play lone ranger. She tells the cop she's going in.

Angel sees a way inAngel scales the building
Angel backs the car up and parks next to a drain pipe that runs vertically alongside the warehouse. He tells Wes he'll meet him back at the car, gets out, then grabs the pipe and effortlessly scales the building.

Kate checks out the building
Inside the warehouse, Kate is alone, ascending a stairway that leads into a large open area.
Kate reacts to Penn's arrival
At the sound of footsteps she turns, aiming her gun at Penn who is descending some stairs. She warns him not to move and threatens to shoot him.

Penn is unimpressed with the display of bravado, and continues walking toward her. She fires several times, striking him.
Penn plays dead
He falls to the floor and lies unmoving at the foot of the stairs.
Kate starts to make a call
Kate approaches him, leans down and checks for a pulse. Not finding one, she returns her weapon to its holster and takes her radio, intending to report what had happened.
Penn grabs Kate
Penn reaches up and grabs her, then throws her across the room. She struggles to get up as he slowly walks toward her.

Suddenly, someone drops through the ceiling above, landing between them. It's Angel. He glances at Kate, then faces Penn.
Penn is pleased to see his sire
Penn is pleased to see his sire and greets him warmly. He wonders where Angelus has been, since they were to meet in Italy many years before but he had never shown up.
Angel
Angel tells him he was sidetracked in Romania by gypsies.

Kate is talking into her radio, attempting to get assistance.
Kate calls for assistance
Penn looks toward Kate and invites Angel to join him in a drink.

Angel declines the offer, telling Penn that's not the reason he's there.
Penn wonders why Angel is there
Penn wonders why he is there.
"To kill you"
Angel morphs into game face as Kate looks on in shock, and tells Penn he's there to kill him.

As they both tangle with each other, Kate drags herself back against the wall.

Penn and Angel throw each other around, each taking turns getting in his hits. Angel throws Penn through a wall and yells to Lockley to get out of the building.
Penn, Angel fight
Penn returns, crashing through the wall, and jumps Angel. He notices Angel had addressed Lockley by name and wonders what's happened to Angelus that he now consorts with humans.

Angel tells him that things change. Penn throws him into Kate who has her gun aimed in their general direction. Kate stares at Angel's vamp face
Angel looks at Kate
Angel pulls himself up, Penn has disappeared.

Kate looks upon Angel's vamp face in stunned disbelief.

Angel has morphed back into human face, there are cops going through the warehouse, looking for Penn.
Kate pulls a gun on Angel
Kate notes that she shot Penn several times but he still got up. As Angel walks toward her, she pulls her gun and aims it at his chest. She wonders if the same thing would happen if she shot him. She wants to know what he is.
Angel notes the details
Angel reminds her that she saw what he was. She lowers her gun as he walks past her. He tells her there are details about the killings that haven't been given to the press.

Lockley wants to know what he knows about those details.

He tells her about puncture wounds and the victims having been drained of their blood.
Kate isn't comfortable with Angel's knowledge
Kate isn't comforted by the fact Angel knows details that have not been made public.

Angel tells her she can't stop the killer by conventional means.

She doesn't understand what he's talking about.
Angel explains the methods
Angel relates the methods that are effective for killing vampires; sun, beheading or a stake driven through the heart.

Kate thinks he's telling fairy tales.

Angel tells her he only speaks the truth but she doesn't believe him.
Angel reckons Kate will lose
Angel understands that she doesn't believe, that even after she saw the evidence with her own eyes, she still won't let herself believe what she saw. He informs her that this is why she can't hope to win.

Kate doesn't want to listen to anything else he has to say.

Angel grabs the cross that's hanging from her neck and closes his hand around it. The sound of his flesh sizzling is clearly audible.
Angel knows Kate isn't ready to listenKate looks at Angel's hand, smoking as he grips the cross
Angel tells her she won't hear anything because she's not ready to listen.

Kate looks down at the smoke rising from Angel's burning flesh as he let's go of the cross and walks away.

Kate gets some files to peruse
Kate is in the police station's briefing room, staring at the pictures on the wall.
Kate looks over the old files
A cop brings her some old records, telling her she brought whatever she could find that fit with this killer's M.O. She wonders if Kate thinks the current killer is copying the older crimes of someone else.

Kate peruses the clippings and files the officer brought in.

Cordy greets a new client
Back at the office, Cordelia is welcoming a new client. She asks how he heard of them.
Penn
Penn tells her he was referred by the police, a tall, blonde woman but he doesn't remember her name.

Cordelia realizes he's describing Kate, and offers her name.

Penn files the name away in his mind for future reference. He wants to know what Angel's relationship is to Kate.

Cordelia says they're friends just as she realizes this 'client' is working her for information. She notices his long coat laying on the chair, in spite of the fact the weather is hot and sunny. She puts two and two together and realizes he's the killer they're looking for.
Cordy opens the blindsPenn dodges the sunlight
Penn begins to warn her that he'll kill her before she can do anything but Cordelia has made it to the blinds and opened them, causing Penn to step back from the bright ray of sunlight now piercing the office.

Angel enters the office and sees Penn but they are separated by the shaft of sunlight. Angel tells Cordelia to get him a stake. She wonders why he wants a steak so early in the morning, then realizes he means 'stake' and leaves to get one.
Angel informs Penn he's finished
Angel tells Penn that it's over.

Penn disagrees, telling him it's never over.

Cordy returns with a stake and hands it to Angel.
Penn likes what he is
Angel tells Penn he's sorry for turning him into what he is, but Penn doesn't see it as a bad thing. He thinks he's rather creative in his killing.

Angel finds him rather pathetic, after 200 years he's still trying to stick it to his father. He thinks Penn is probably impressed with his own celebrity, keeping articles and clippings on his wall.
Wes in a pickle
As Penn is slowly moving toward the door, it opens and Wesley comes in. Penn grabs him before Angel or Cordelia can warn him of the danger.
Angel tells Penn to let Wes go
Angel moves toward them, but is stopped by the shaft of sunlight still separating them.

Angel tells Penn to let Wesley go.
Penn agrees he needs to change tactics
Penn says he appreciates Angel's opinions on his tactics and he agrees that he's become stagnant. He thinks it's time for a fresh approach. He tells Angel to think on the worst possible scenario he could imagine and he'll meet Angel there.

Penn throws Wes into Angel, tosses his coat over his head to protect himself from the daylight and runs out the door.

Kate checks the stacksAngel walks the streets
A montage of overlapping images: Kate perusing the stacks at an old bookstore, Angel walking the night darkened streets, Penn in his apartment planning his next step, Kate scribbling notes.

Kate continues her research
Kate is in her apartment, still researching through books and taking notes. There's a knock at the door.

She opens the door to find Angel on the other side, he asks for an invite into the apartment. Kate knows he can't enter without an invitation and clearly has no intention of issuing one.
Angel
Angel realizes she's been doing research and asks her if she now believes him.
Kate, in no mood to listen
She says she does, and calls him by the name she heard Penn address him as, Angelus. She lets him know she's been brushing up on the history of Angelus, she knows what he was. She's not going to invite him into her apartment. She also knows that Angelus was the one responsible for siring Penn.
Angel offers help
Angel knows he can't make up for the things he's done in the past but pleads with her to let him help end this.

She curtly declines the offer, telling him she knows how to kill the vampire and the next time she sees him, she'll kill Angel as well. She slams the door in his face.

Cordy checks the computer
At the office, Cordelia is doing research on the computer as Angel looks over her shoulder at the monitor.. She finds a newspaper article from 1929, a killing at a local hotel. The headline reads, "Suspect in bizarre murder escapes, flees residential hotel before police arrive." She asks Angel what it is she's supposed to be looking for specifically.

He tells her he's not sure yet.
Wes finds something
Wesley is reading from a book of old newspaper articles. He says the killer was tracked to a hotel in 1963, but he escaped capture. He shows a picture of the hotel, which is now an apartment building.
Angel notes Penn's predictability
Cordelia compares the picture of the apartment building in the book to the picture of the hotel on her computer screen, and notices they are one and the same. Different names, some remodeling, but the same building.

Angel notes that Penn is incredibly predictable.

Angel reminds Wes no invite necessary
Angel and Wesley enter Penn's apartment, Wes has a stake at the ready. He invites Angel inside but finds he's already entered.

Angel reminds Wes he doesn't need an invitation into another vampire's lair.
Angel notes the clippings on the wall
Angel looks around briefly and notes that Penn isn't there.

Wesley wonders what they should do at this point.
Wes, Angel, ponder the evidence
Angel notices some photos on the table. Wesley joins him and sees the pictures of a yellow school bus, a bus route marked on a map and a bus schedule for a middle school also laying on the table.

Angel notes that Penn is finally changing his M.O.

Kate presents photos of Angel
In the briefing room at the police station, Kate is holding up the sketch of Penn that Angel had given her. She tells the cops present that they've all been given a copy and that this is the suspect they're searching for. She holds up surveillance camera pictures of Angel and tells the officers that he is the one who will lead them to their suspect, since they think he will make an effort to contact Angel soon.
Penn arrives
Penn walks into the room, not pleased with the quality of his likeness in the sketch. He is jumped by a couple of cops. With little effort, Penn tosses them across the room.
Penn grabs Kate and drags her out
Kate tries to get a stake from her purse but she's no match for Penn's vampiric speed. He moves toward her, knocking a couple more cops out of the way in the process, and grabs her before she has a chance to do anything. He drags her out of the station with him.

Angel, Wes arrive at the police station
Wesley drives Angel's car into the underground garage at the police station which is very active with police and squad cars coming and going. He tells Angel they're inside. Angel has been hiding under a blanket, which he promptly tosses aside.

Wesley questions why they are at the police station, he's concerned about the school children who may be in danger.
Angel knows Penn is at the station
Angel tells Wes that Penn is there, at the station.

Over the police radio, they hear a general location for the suspect being broadcast. Angel exits the car, sights a manhole cover partially askew and heads down the manhole into the sewer.

Penn intends to show Kate his plans
Penn is dragging Lockley through the sewer tunnels. She wants to know what he's going to do.

He throws her up against the wall, morphs into vamp face and tells her he'll show her what his plans are.
Angel distracts Penn
Angel enters the sewer tunnel before Penn can do anything to Kate. As he distracts Penn, Kate pulls a small bottle of holy water from her pocket. She splashes the side of his face with it, burning him and causing him to throw her aside.

Penn tells Angel that he was right about Penn spending the last 200 years trying to get back at his father, but he has realized that it's Angelus he views in that role. He attacks Angel.
Kate searches for a weapon
They fight with each other as Lockley searches for something to use as a weapon. She tries to grab a broken board but Penn kicks it away from her, then hits her.
Penn gets an advantage
Angel pulls him away resulting in Penn doing a backflip over Angel's head and ending up behind Angel, having him immobilized by pinning both arms behind Angel's back.

He taunts Angel about having forgotten the very lessons he taught.
Kate armed with pointy wood
Kate is standing in front of them both, armed with large, pointed piece of wood. Angel looks at her as Penn, still holding Angel in the headlock, continues to taunt him for being weak. Angel makes no move to get away from Penn, he just keeps his eyes fixed on Kate.

Suddenly Kate shoves the board through Angel and into Penn's heart, dusting him.
Kate pulls the board out of Angel
Angel's face contorts in pain, but he remains standing with the board embedded in his body. He thinks Kate intended to dust them both.

She lets him know her missing his heart was intentional.
Angel takes a break
She yanks the board out of Angel, he sinks to the ground.

Kate falls a few feet from him as they both try to recover.

Cordy
Angel is sitting on the roof of his building, overlooking the city. Cordelia joins him. She tells him she just had another vision and hands him a piece of paper on which she's taken notes about the new job.
Angel looks out over the city
Angel takes the paper from her but his mind seems to be elsewhere. Angel notes the city reminds him of his own growing up, he wonders if anything ever really changes.

Cordelia assures him that people change, that he has changed, he shouldn't let someone else's dreams make him question that.
Cordy prefers not to be reminded
Angel reminds her that the killing dreams were pleasant for him on some level, a fact Cordy asks not to be reminded of in the future.
Angel knows the demon is always inside
Angel is still bothered by that fact and reminded that the demon is always very much a part of him.

Cordy assures him that there are many parts that make up the whole, of which the demon aspect is only one. She reminds him that the visions come for "Angel", not for "Angelus" and offers that The Powers certainly must know the difference. People can and do change, and he is proof of that.
Cordy assures she'll kill Angel if necessary
Angel still isn't convinced. He reminds her that sometimes people change back. He starts to say that if he ever --
