"Slouching Toward Bethlehem"

Written by: Jeffrey Bell Original Air Date: October 27, 2002

The title of this episode comes from a line in a poem by William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"
car trouble
A family is stranded by the side of the road with car trouble. The teen son complains as the father works under the hood, trying to fix things.
Connor offers assistance
Connor walks up to the car and asks the kid in the back seat if they're okay.

The kid calls out for his father who comes around to the side of the car and asks Connor if he can help him.

Connor tells him they're in trouble.

The father replies they're fine.

Connor looks at the kid, notes his baseball cap and tells him he likes his hat.

The father nervously tells him they've called for help as a truck comes speeding around the corner and pulls to a stop near their vehicle. The father turns to see the truck, then turns back to tell Connor help has arrived but Connor has disappeared.
vamp offers 'help'
The father tells the guy who gets out of the truck they're just in time, he doesn't know if the car needs a "jump or a tow."

The truck driver vamps out and says he votes for "jump" as he attacks the man.
mom faces vamp at window
Another vamp jumps out of the truck, runs to the car, smashes the side window and tries to pull the mother out.

Connor stakes him from behind and asks the woman if she's all right. He doesn't wait for an answer as he pulls the cigarette lighter out of the dash and takes it with him, then attacks the vamp driver.

During the fight, Connor gets thrown into the bed of the truck. He jumps up with a large gasoline can and beats the vamp with it, spilling some of the contents onto his opponent. He does a backflip out of the truck bed and disappears.
vamp gets toasted
The vamp returns to attacking the father.

Connor calls to the vamp, getting his attention. He tosses the red hot lighter at the vamp who one hand catches it, setting himself on fire.
father, Connor
Connor tries to help the father up.

He pulls away from Connor, not sure what to make of him.

Connor looks at the car and asks the man if that's his family.

The kid calls out for his dad who looks warily at Connor, starts to say something, then rushes back to his car and gets inside, comforting his family as a sullen Connor looks on.

Connor enters the hotelConnor watches
At the hotel, Connor leaps up on to the second floor ledge outside of the building. He jimmies the window open and goes inside. He looks around as he walks down the hallway, stopping at the second floor landing, peering around the corner down into the lobby where things pick up where they left off at the end of "The House Always Wins."
Cordelia
Angel, Fred and Gunn stand on the landing looking at Cordelia who's standing in the center of the lobby. Angel says her name.

She asks who they are.

Angel is happy to see her and approaches her enthusiastically.

She backs away from him, fearful.

He stops and asks her if she doesn't remember. He tells her his name.

Cordelia doesn't say anything, just looks confused and afraid.

Angel thinks he's having a hallucination and asks Fred and Gunn if they see her too.

Gunn assures Angel they see her as he and Fred step off the landing and move closer to Cordelia.
Angel
Angel tells her they're her friends, he introduces Gunn and Fred. Angel figures something must have happened but he's glad she's back.

She asks if they know her.
Cordelia
Angel tells her they know her well.

Cordelia asks who she is.

Angel asks Cordelia what she remembers.

She doesn't know; "animals, numbers, flossing ..." She doesn't remember them or who she is.

Angel tells her her name and that she works with them there at the hotel. He says she's been gone for awhile but she's safe now as he takes a step toward her.

Cordy backs away from him.

He stops and assures her they are her friends, they want to help her.

Cordelia asks about being gone.

Angel says what matters is that she's back.

She notices movement on the upper floor landing as Connor leaves. She asks if someone else lives there.
Fred, Gunn
Fred tells Cordy she thinks she has amnesia, perhaps she hit her head or something.

Gunn wonders if they should take her to the hospital.

Cordelia assures him she doesn't need that right now, "maybe later."

Fred whispers to Gunn she doesn't think seeing a doctor will solve the problem.
Cordelia
Angel notices Lorne outside in the garden. He doesn't figure seeing him will help Cordelia understand things. He distracts Cordelia from the door by telling her he thinks seeing some of her things might help her remember as he shoves Gunn toward the door and asks him to check the garden.

Gunn sees Lorne and understands the problem as he heads out and gets Lorne away from the door.

Angel asks Fred to help him look in the office for some of her things as Cordelia looks on suspiciously.

Angel, Fred
In the office, Angel notes they avoided a potential disaster, figuring seeing the green demon wouldn't have helped ease Cordelia's fears.

Fred wonders if they shouldn't just tell Cordy the truth, considering the bizarre world they live in, she's bound to find out sooner than later.

Angel disagrees saying he wants her to remember who he is before he freaks her out with the, "I'm dead, drinks blood, part of my resume."
Cordy watches Angel, Fred
Cordelia watches Angel and Fred from the lobby, looking concerned about what's going on.
Angel, Fred consider the situation
Fred asks if Angel wonders why Cordy is back.

Angel admits he was happy to see her, he hadn't even considered why she's returned. He asks if Fred has any ideas.

She doesn't but points out that if Cordy was where they thought she was, anything is possible.
the blade on the floor
They notice Cordy looking on, stop talking, smile and wave at her.

She continues eyeing them suspiciously, muttering under her breath, "That's creepy." She looks down to the floor and notices a sharp, curved blade laying there. She thinks that's pretty creepy too.
Angel
Angel and Fred come back out in to the lobby. Angel tells Cordy they couldn't find any of her things in the office.

She backs away from them as the phone starts to ring. She wonders if anyone is going to answer it.

Angel says they'll let the answering machine pick up as he reassures her she has nothing to be afraid of.

She offers that's easy for him to say, not so easy for her to feel considering nothing is familiar to her.
Cordy hears herself on the answering machine
The machine picks up, Cordy listens as she hears her own voice on the recording answering the call and realizes she works there.

The caller identifies himself as "Murray", says he's at the spa, the "demon broad" has returned, then starts to say something about "blood sucking."

A nervous Cordy listens to this, not sure what to make of it.

Angel emphatically clears his throat and looks at Fred.

She rushes to the phone and picks up the call telling the caller they're on their way. She hangs up and looks at Angel.
Fred tries to cover
Cordelia asks if the caller said, "demon broad"?

Fred says he was referring to his wife, explaining that it's a divorce case.

As Cordelia turns back to Angel, Fred looks at him and mouths "No, it's not."

He looks at her.

She says she'll get Gunn and take care of the problem "before the situation multiplies." She emphasizes "multiplies" as she makes a pregnant motion near her stomach.

Angel gets it and agrees she should take care of that right away. He says he'll stay behind and help Cordelia settle in as Fred rushes out.

There's an awkward silence between Angel and Cordelia as neither knows what to say.

Finally, Angel starts to make small talk.

Cordy interrupts and tells him she wants to go home. She wonders if he knows where she lives.

Cordy enters the hotel roomCordy's things packed
Angel takes Cordelia to a room upstairs in the hotel where all of her things are packed in boxes stacked all over the room. She looks around and asks if that's everything.

Angel answers Fred and Gunn moved the stuff there from her apartment after she disappeared.

Cordelia picks up a shoe and looks at it.

Angel asks if she remembers it, she wore it to the ballet they attended ("Waiting in the Wings").

She asks if the two of them really went to the ballet.

Angel says they all went, yes.

She puts the shoe down and continues looking around the room as Angel says he thought she might remember the ballet, it was special. He realizes she doesn't remember it, telling her it's too bad, they had a good time.
AngelCordelia
She picks up an old, worn teddy bear, looks at it. She wishes she could remember.

Angel wishes she could as well. He tells her he wants to help her regain her memory.

Cordelia thinks that sounds good but "not tonight."

Angel understands. He tells her to call if she needs anything as he starts to leave. He reassures her again that she's among friends as he closes the door and departs.

Cordy and the mirror
Cordelia has changed out of her ascension outfit into something more casual. She sits in front of the mirror in the hotel room, introducing herself in various ways. She gives up on that, walks over to the desk and thumbs through her high school year book.
yearbook pic
She pauses to look at a picture of her in her cheerleader uniform, noting she was popular and not surprised by that. She reads through some of the notes written in the book by friends; mentions of the school burning down, the giant snake and a "thanks for the flaming arrows." She closes the book and ponders that a moment.
Cordlelia ponders her past
She looks through a pile of pictures of herself showing her various hairstyles over the years. She wonders if she was a spy. She finds a picture of her holding baby Connor with Angel standing next to her.
Cordelia follows singing
She walks out into the hallway. She hears a voice singing and follows the sound.

She stops outside Lorne's door as he tells the singer to stop, he can tell him what he read.

Cordelia slowly cracks the door slightly open and peers inside. She hears Lorne tell the client he has an addiction and "if you don't stop snackin' on you know whos, you're going to end up on the wrong end of the you know --"
Lorne checks the hallwayLorne's client gets hungry
He hears a noise and moves toward the door, opens it and peers outside into the hall.

Cordelia leaves before they see each other.

He walks back into the room, the guy he was reading is sniffing the air and salivating heavily.

Lorne looks at him.

He looks back at Lorne and asks,"what?"

nervous CordeliaCordy finds blood on the desk
Cordy walks to the landing above the lobby, she calls out, asking if anyone is there.

Angel hurries to move a number of containers of blood off of the lobby desk. He's managed to get into the back office with his stash before Cordelia comes down.

She walks over and notices a spot of blood on top of the reception desk. She calls out and heads toward the back office.

Angel exits the back of the office and rushes through the lobby without being seen, his arms laden with the blood, as Cordelia enters.
purple slimed ax bladeCordy hides behind the desk
A frightened Cordy comes back out into the lobby as Gunn and Fred enter. She ducks down behind the desk.

Gunn is commenting on dealing with those "nasty little babies."

As he and Fred discuss the job they just finished, Gunn says he knows they get paid for it but that's a job he'd do for free.

Fred agrees, saying she'll "be washing their teeny brains out of my hair for a week."

Gunn lays his ax down on top of the desk.

Cordy looks up at the ax blade, which is hanging over the back of the desk, just above her head. She notices it's covered in purple slime.
Cordy runs into Angel
Fred suggests they go upstairs, saying "Cordelia doesn't want to know we do this kind of exterminating."

Gunn wonders when Angel is going to tell her the truth about what goes on there.

Some of the purple slime drops off of the ax blade and onto Cordelia. She gasps, jumps up and runs out into the lobby.

Fred tries to reassure her but a frantic Cordy isn't interested in listening. She tries to run, and runs into Angel who tells her he can explain.

She runs the other way and out the door.
Angel tries to explain
Fred, Gunn and Angel follow her out into the garden where they're attacked by a couple of W&H operatives.

Cordelia acquits herself effectively in the fight, then wonders how she did that. She's convinced she must be a spy and the others are too. She figures they're Russian spies who brainwashed her so they could get information from her.
"Do I look Russian to you?"
Gunn incredulously asks if he looks Russian to her.

Cordelia answers, "black Russian."

Angel informs her that's a drink.

She's not believing anything on his say so.

Angel tells her nobody is a spy, the guys that attacked them work for the lawyers at Wolfram & Hart. He figures they know Cordy is back and tells Gunn they need to keep her in the hotel where it's safe.
Angel asks for trust
Cordy wonders if he's kidding, pointing out his friends were just discussing murdering children and there's "singing, and blood, and pointy things!" She asks what's going on.

Angel tells her he understands things seem strange and maybe a bit scary but he wants her to believe that they are doing everything they can to help her through this. He says the person they know, the Cordy she's trying to recall, is comfortable there, as weird as that may sound to her right now. He reassures her they're her friends, she's safe, they only want to help.

Cordelia calms down and believes him.

Cordy, Angel in her room
In her room, Cordy is sitting on the edge of the bed, Angel is standing in the doorway. She asks if she's not a spy.

Angel confirms she isn't.
pic of baby Connor
She asks if she's a mother as she holds up a picture of baby Connor.

Angel walks in and takes the picture from her. He tells her that's his son, Connor, but she's not his mother.

Cordelia notes they weren't a happy family then.

Angel sits next to her on the edge of the bed and answers, "No, not like that."

She asks about the two of them, if they weren't together.

Angel says they weren't as they both move in closer, heading toward a kiss.
Angel, Cordelia talk
Cordelia suddenly snaps back and asks if she was a nun.

Angel has no idea where that came from.

She wonders if they weren't a happy family because she was a nun. She reaches into a box and pulls out a handful of rosaries. She tells him she was going through her things and found them as she lays them in his hands before he has a chance to see what she's giving him.
Angel vamps out
Angel growls and morphs into vamp face.

Cordelia screams and runs out of the room, down the hallway and into the lobby.

There she runs into Lorne, knocking them both to the floor. He ends up on top of her.

She looks up at him and screams. He screams. She starts beating on him yelling for him to get off of her. She gets on top and continues beating on him until Angel arrives to pull her off.

He tells her Lorne is with them.
Cordy wants an explanation for Lorne
Lorne assures her if she's upset about the lingerie, it was "for a friend."

Cordelia asks Angel to tell her it's Halloween and Lorne "isn't what I think he is."

Lorne responds with, "Trick or Treat."
Fred, Lorne, Gunn
Gunn and Fred come in. Fred tells Cordelia that she and Lorne are good friends, she wonders if she remembers any of that.

Cordelia demands answers from Angel. He acknowledges they may not have been entirely honest with her but only because they were afraid she'd be frightened by the truth.

Cordelia points out the lying and deception haven't been particularly comforting.

Angel gets that and agrees it's time to be honest about everything.

Lorne, Gunn, Fred, Angel listening to Cordy
Cordelia is in her room with the others, recapping what they've told her about herself; cheerleader, princess, warrior, visions and super powers, and now she's targeted by an evil law firm because she spent three months in a higher plane "fighting for the forces of good." She gets more upset and figures the reasonable explanation for her memory loss is that nobody would want to remember any of that.

Lorne offers her a drink of his Seabreeze.

Angel says he knows it's a lot for her to absorb at once.

Cordy isn't so sure about the souled vampire and his "sidekicks".

Gunn objects to that term.

Angel has an idea. He tells Cordelia to choose a song.

She thinks he's crazy.

Fred tells her it's so Lorne can read her.

Gunn explains how that works.

Angel thinks maybe it will help explain what's happening and how they can return her memory.

Cordelia asks if she's musical.

Angel assures her it doesn't matter, suggesting she just pick something.
Lorne listens to Cordy sing
Cordelia starts singing "The Greatest Love of All", horribly off key. (For you continuity geeks, this is the same song she sang in BtVS' season 1 ep, "The Puppet Show").

Lorne reads her as she sings, his expression growing more and more nervous.
Lorne not liking what he's read
Fred asks Gunn if Lorne looks a little greener than usual.

Lorne stops Cordy and stammers she's great, it's great, everything's great. He rushes out of the room.
Cordy wonders what's up
Angel heads for the door, intending to follow Lorne.

Cordy asks if it was her.

Angel assures her it wasn't. He stammers for an explanation, then just leaves.
Gunn
Cordelia looks at Fred and Gunn, telling them they aren't even good liars. She intends to leave.

Fred reminds her it's not safe.

She doesn't take the warning seriously.

Gunn offers to accompany her.

Cordelia firmly declines and walks out of the room.

Fred and Gunn follow her into the hallway. Fred suggests they get something to eat.

Cordelia tells them she doesn't want anything to eat, she wants to talk to Angel, alone. She walks off, leaving Fred and Gunn standing in the hall.

Angel wants to talk to Lorne
Angel knocks on Lorne's door, he wants to know what Lorne saw when he read Cordy.

Lorne doesn't open the door, just shouts to Angel to "Go away!"

Angel tells him if something bad is coming, he needs to know.
Lorne opens the door
Lorne opens the door and says it's bad, then starts to close the door.

Angel stops him, saying he needs details.

Lorne answers he hasn't got any details, just a migraine, "a tummy full of rattlesnakes and a strong suspicion I'm going to lose my lunch again if I don't start drinking myself silly." He tries to shut the door.
Angel wants details
Angel stops him again. He needs more information than that.

Lorne asks if the words "slouching towards Bethlehem" mean anything to him or "despair, torment, terror." He says he saw disconnected bits and pieces, enough to scare him. Evil is coming and it plans to stay.

Wes, Lilah
Wes and Lilah are at his place, in bed. She tells him it isn't a secret that they're together this way. The firm knows.

Wes isn't surprised by that, figuring it's their job to know all the "sordid" details of their employee's lives.

Lilah likes the sound of "sordid" as she tells Wes Angel knows about them as well.

Wes points out he doesn't work for Angel anymore and he doesn't care what Angel thinks.

Lilah smiles and accuses him of lying, reminding him he said the same thing when Angel was sunk to the bottom of the ocean and they both know how that went.

Wes tells her that was different. He doesn't care that Angel knows about their "relationship".
Lilah on top
Lilah smiles and straddles Wes, telling him he owes her a dollar, he's the first to refer to what they're doing as a "relationship".

Wes retrieves his wallet from the night stand and pulls out a buck.
Lilah gets her buck
She tells him to sign it first.

He wants to know why.

She says "as proof".

Wes asks what it's proof of.

She answers, "of now, of this" as she leans down and starts kissing him.

Cordy in the hallwayLorne's client
Cordelia wanders down a hall at the hotel wondering how big the place is. She calls out for Angel, then "Mr. Bumpy Face." She laughs nervously. She hears a noise and turns, thinking it's Gunn and Fred. Though she doesn't see anyone, she tells them she doesn't want them following her around.
demon guy ready to snack
The guy Lorne was reading in his room earlier steps into view, telling Cordy she "smells good". He turns into a demonic thing, growls and chases her.

In another part of the hotel, Angel hears the commotion.

Cordelia runs down the stairs into the lobby.

Demon guy leaps over the balcony and confronts her.

She asks what he wants.

He answers, "a snack."

She screams.
dead demon guy
Connor jumps the demon from behind and throws it away from Cordelia. He tells her she's not safe there.
Connor
The demon starts to get back up, Connor tosses a blade that kills it.

Cordy asks Connor if he can get her out of there.

He offers her his hand, she takes it, they run out of the hotel together.

looking at the demon body
Angel, Fred and Gunn look at the demon corpse in the lobby. Angel asks how they could have let Cordelia wander off alone.

Fred points out she's a grown woman.

Gunn adds Cordelia has proven she can take care of herself, reminding Angel she handled the W&H guys effectively earlier.

Angel wonders what happened if W&H came back, if they sent in hundreds of those demons, if this is how it starts. He remembers Lorne's words about "slouching towards Bethlehem" and fears W&H took Cordelia because she knows, even if she doesn't realize it. He retrieves something to fight with from the weapons cabinet.
Fred has questions
Fred asks if he's been caffeinating his blood again or if there's something he hasn't told them.

Lorne comes in, looks at the demon's corpse and says there's something going on but this isn't it. He explains the demon was a client of his who had a habit of snacking on people.
Angel
Angel can't believe Lorne let it inside the hotel.

Fred wants to get back to the important stuff, asking if whatever is going on is why Lorne rushed out after reading Cordelia.

Lorne confirms that's true.

Gunn wants to know how bad it is.

Lorne suggests looking for adjectives in the "Book of Revelations."

Fred asks if he read anything else.

He says what he got was multi-layered, dense and frightening. He doesn't want to pursue it further.

Angel tells them they have to find Cordelia. He figures she's alone and probably afraid.

Connor, Cordy, polar bearthe warehouse
Connor and Cordelia are in a large warehouse of sorts, looking at a taxidermy specimen of a polar bear. Cordelia is impressed.

Connor says he loves that one, he wishes he'd killed it.

Cordy thinks that's an odd way to express affection.

As they walk back toward another area of the warehouse, Cordelia asks what he was doing at the hotel, she wonders if he lives there.

He answers no.

She asks if he'd just decided to drop in then.

He answers he'd noticed she'd returned.

She asks if they know each other, if they're friends.

He says she was nice to him once.

She asks if he's friends with the others.
Connor starts up the ladderCordy asks for a name
Connor starts up a ladder and tells her to follow.

Cordelia asks him his name.

He gives it.

She mentions the coincidence of Angel having a son with the same name. She wonders if Angel named his son after him, then realizes he's Angel's son as she follows him up the ladder to an area above, where he's living.
Connor's home
She mentions her realization that Angel is his father.

Connor mutters that he didn't have a choice in the matter as he turns on the light.

Cordy asks what this place is.

Connor answers, "Home."

Cordy wonders why he doesn't live at the hotel with his father.
Connor
Connor tells her he sunk him to the bottom of the ocean, "to punish him."
Cordy appreciates honesty
Cordelia laughs but stops when she realizes by his expression he's telling the truth.

He tells her he put a knife to her throat once, tried to kill her ("Benediction"). He says he didn't understand things then. He apologizes for that.

Cordy thanks him for being honest with her since nobody else has been. She sits next to him, reaches out and puts her hand on his arm, telling him that means a lot to her.

Lilah leaves to take a callWes, not quite asleep
At Wesley's, Lilah takes a call on her cell phone. She looks over at Wes who appears to be sleeping.

She gets out of bed and moves into the other room to continue her call.
Wes listens at the doorLilah on the phone
Wes gets up and listens through the door which has been left ajar. He hears Lilah get the news about Cordy's return and asks if they have a sighting.

She repeats back to the caller that Cordy is with "the kid" then looks back into the bedroom where Wes has returned to bed. Lilah tells the caller to "put an extraction team together", she's on her way.
Wes asks Lilah if she has to go
She returns to the bedroom and retrieves her clothes.

Wes asks her if she really has to leave.

She wonders if he's already started to miss her as she kisses him and pulls her purse off of the night stand. As she does, the dollar bill Wes had given her earlier falls to the floor, unnoticed. Lilah leaves.

Connor
Connor heads toward the door, Cordy asks him to stay. He tells her he thought she was asleep.

She doesn't want him to go.

He assures her he was just locking the door, she's safe.

She wonders why she's so afraid if that's the case.
Cordelia
Cordelia sits up, trying to remember things; family, favorite food, first kiss, but she comes up empty. She wonders if Connor knows how alone that makes her feel.

Connor pauses a moment, then tells her she likes shoes and donuts, and she's brave.

Cordelia cries and asks when she was brave

Connor answers she is right now, she's lost everything but she's remained strong.
Cordelia has a bad feelingCordelia upset
Cordelia has a bad feeling that something awful is happening, or is going to happen, and she can't remember it. She doesn't know what to do or who to trust but she does know she can trust Connor. She doesn't know why, but she does. She has the feeling Connor has lost everything too.

He goes cold and tells her he had nothing to lose. He walks over to the window.

Cordy asks him not to go far.

He sits on the window ledge.

noticing Wesley's entrance
At the hotel, Angel, Gunn and Fred are trying to figure out where to search for Cordelia.
Wes has info
Wes enters and tells them he knows where to find her. He thinks it's a bit sloppy of them to have lost her already after going to such lengths to find her.

Angel says they didn't find her, she just showed up with no memory of who she is, who they are or what's happened.

Wes thinks a "fresh start" doesn't sound so bad.
Wes tells what he knows
Angel asks what Wes knows.

He tells them W&H want to get a hold of her because she may have spent time with The Powers. They consider her valuable. He doubts "the boy" will be able to stop them.

Angel realizes he's saying she's with his son. He asks if Wes has a good source for that information.

Wes notices Angel doesn't seem too concerned.

Angel is confident Connor will take good care of Cordy.

Connor, Cordy getting closeConnor warns Cordelia
Cordelia wakes up, Connor is sleeping next to her, his arm draped over her waist. As she rolls from her side onto her back, his hand ends up resting on her breast.

Before she has a chance to react to that, he's awake and over her, his hand over her mouth. He whispers to her that someone is there.
Cordy readies for a fight
Cordelia looks toward the door as one of W&H's men enters. He trips a wire strung across the floor which results in his being hoisted to the ceiling and hung upside down.

Connor picks up a board and beats him with it. He asks Cordelia if she remembers how to fight, saying they're coming to get her. He's set traps but they'll have to fight. He tosses her a sword and asks again if she remembers how.

Another of W&H's men comes crashing through the window.

Cordy picks up the sword and figures now is a good time to find out if she remembers.
Lilah watches the goings onFight
Fight ensues as more W&H commandoes stream into the room, some are caught in traps Connor has set as he and Cordelia deal with others.

One of the men slaps a tiny camera onto the wall so Lilah can watch the proceedings from a nearby rooftop on a miniature monitor.

Gunn, Angel and Fred arrive just as Connor gets knocked down and Cordelia is being taken out. Fight continues.
Lilah enjoys the fightLilah, Carlo
One of the W&H guys, Carlo, approaches Lilah on the rooftop and tells her "it's done."

Lilah is pleased to hear it. She tells him she's going home. She directs him to call off the men doing the fighting.

He relays that instruction.

The W&H guys get the word to depart and do so.

Gunn figures they were just too tough for them so they retreated.

Angel helps Cordy to her feet and asks if she's okay. She nods.

Connor gets up off the floor, saying he didn't think there would be so many.
Angel wants to take Cordy back to the hotel
Angel awkwardly lets him know he appreciates the effort. He wants to get Cordelia back to the hotel.

She says she'd rather stay with Connor.
Cordy chooses to stay with Connor
Angel doesn't like the idea, telling her Connor is a good fighter but she needs more than that right now.

She agrees, saying she needs honesty and Connor was the only one who gave her that. She knows the others were trying to help but the truth was the way to do that, and that's what she got from him.

Angel, Gunn and Fred reluctantly depart. Angel tells Connor as he leaves to keep Cordelia safe.

Connor nods.

Wes comes to a conclusion
Wes sits on the bed at his place, something weighing heavily on his mind.

He notices the dollar from the bet on the floor where it had fallen when Lilah slid her purse off of the table and left. He picks it up and looks at it.

Fred, Gunn, Angel at the hotel
Angel, Fred and Gunn arrive back at the hotel. Angel is disappointed Cordelia chose to stay with Connor. He thinks maybe they should have been honest with her from the beginning.

Gunn doesn't think that would have been a good idea.

Fred is sure Cordy just needs some time to figure things out, she'll realize "who the real champion is."

Gunn agrees with that, pointing out it was their arrival that saved the day.

They're interrupted by a thump coming from the back office. Gunn holds his ax at the ready, Fred is armed with a smaller one, as they cautiously approach the office with Angel.
Finding Lorne
They walk in and find Lorne with a small hole in his head, gagged and tied to a chair.
Angel tries to get answers
As Fred tends his wound, Angel and Gunn get him untied. Angel asks who did it.

Lorne stammers, W--, W--.

Gunn thinks he's saying Wes did it.

Lorne shakes his head no.

Angel asks if it was W&H.

Lorne nods in response.

Gunn doesn't understand why, he thought the target was Cordelia and she wasn't there at the hotel.

Angel realizes W&H must have known Lorne read Cordelia.

Gunn adds that the attack on Cordy was a diversion.

Angel notes they fell for it. He realizes they weren't after Cordelia, they were after the information Lorne read from her. He asks how much they got.

Lorne tells Angel W&H knows it allLorne says he wouldn't say anything, they had a demon that burrowed into his head, they got it all.

Gunn wonders if they were set up by W&H or Wesley, pointing out he was the one who came to them with the tip about Cordelia and where she was staying.

Angel notes they don't know that but what they do know is that W&H may now know a lot more about the "doom and gloom" happening than they do and that's a bad thing.

Lilah greets Wes
Wes arrives at Lilah's. She feigns surprise at his arrival.

He doesn't believe she really is.

She admits the only surprise was that it took him so long to show up.
Wes knows he was played
He steps inside and tells her she played him.

She offers that he did it to himself.

Wes knows she wanted him to hear the phone conversation she had at his place so he'd pass the information on to Angel.

She suggests he made the choice to do it, she was just doing her job. He was the one who took what he overheard and passed it on. She thinks he should consider who he's really angry at.
Wes realizes things aren't simple
Wes pauses, sighs, then asks what the real plan was.

Lilah sums it up, saying she could have had "Lorne's brain in a jar" but she left it in because he's a friend of Wesley's.

He wonders if that's supposed to make him trust her again.

She says if she thought he'd ever trust her, she would never have played him that way.

Wes notes things are never simple.
