A/N: The characters do not belong to me and this is purely for fun, not profit. This is the first story I wrote, thought I might post it here.
Chapter 1: Kiss the Bride
The two blondes stood wrapped in each others arms in the foyer of the Registry Office.
"Still wish we could have had a church wedding," said the girl.
"Honey, we've been through this," the man replied, "You don't want to be registering as Mr and Mrs Big Pile of Dust, do you?"
She pouted. "No, I guess not. Like you just the way you are!"
They kissed, noisily, until they were interrupted by a cough, and then pulled apart reluctantly.
"It’s traditional to wait until after the wedding! We're ready for you now," the registrar said, "You're lucky we could fit you in. Do you have witnesses?"
"Uh, yeah," Spike said, indicating a wrinkled pink demon and a certain Sunnydale bartender, "This is - uh - Clement and Willie."
The Registrar frowned, but motioned them through.
*
On the steps outside, beneath the stars, Spike gathered his bride into his arms.
"Where shall we go on honeymoon, love?"
"Ooh," Buffy suggested, "Somewhere with a beach."
Spike pulled a face, "Honey!" he said warningly, and kissed her ravenously.
Just then there was a sound like a snap and Buffy's eyes opened as she suddenly realised she had no idea where she was or what had happened recently. She realised she was being kissed, which was a nice surprise. It took her a few seconds to wonder who. Soft lips, gorgeous eyes, bleached blonde...hair....oh...no.
Spike recognised her at the same second and dropped her unceremoniously on the ground, with an exclamation of horror.
Picking herself up Buffy blustered, "Ew! Spike lips! Lips of Spike!" while the vampire spat on the ground. Memories came trickling back as Buffy tried to work out where in Sunnyhell she was. She looked behind her at the building, looked down at the certificate in her hand and felt violently sick. She thrust the piece of paper at Spike who read it slowly.
"Oh, bollocks!"
*
"Well," said Giles, "I can see! The spell reversal must have worked."
"Yep," Xander said, "Demons no longer beating down the door. Guess they're no longer attracted to me." He thought about this and turned to Anya, "Are you still attracted to me?"
"Well, I still feel like I want to have very sweaty sex with you right here on this couch." she replied, and leapt on top of him.
"Willow!" Giles called, "Take it back! I want to be blind again. And preferably deaf," he added, glaring at Anya and Xander on the couch.
"Well," Willow said, "Everyone ok? No lasting damage?" She was answered with glares.
"Buffy!" Xander remembered, pushing Anya aside, "Where did she go?"
"I think she went somewhere with Spike," Anya said. The others exchanged horrified glances. "Don't worry," Anya reassured them, "She's probably off somewhere having sex with Spike."
"I think the phrase is, 'That's what we were afraid of'" Xander offered.
Just then there was a ferocious slam and the door opened to reveal Buffy and Spike.
"Willow!" They growled together.
"Hey, guys," Willow said, laughing nervously, "I fixed it, didn't I, no harm done! Tell you what, I'll bake cookies." The Slayer and vampire advanced on her, not at all softened by the promise of cookies, "It could have been worse!" Willow said brightly.
Xander whistled, "Baaad move!" Buffy threw the piece of paper at Willow,
"How. Could. It. Be. Worse?"
"Well you could have actually got married...oh."
"You didn't?" Giles asked, "Please tell me..." Willow handed him the certificate, looking pale.
"Its going to take more than cookies to make this better, isn't it?"
*
"I can't say I'm entirely au fait with the American laws on this sort of thing, but I would have thought an annulment..."
"Yeah, an annulment." Willow said happily.
"On what grounds?" Buffy asked, "Being under a spell? That'll do it, sure."
"I'll look into it," Willow offered.
"You did this, Red, you'd better undo it." Spike said. They were all sat around Giles's apartment not looking at each other.
"How am I ever going to tell my mother about this?" Buffy wondered aloud.
"Yeah, well I'm not sure any of my demon friends are gonna be too chuffed when they find out I've married a bloody Slayer. And besides, your mum always had a soft spot for me."
"Yeah," Xander said, "There was that whole time she hit you with an axe. Anyway, your mom knows all about magic, she'll understand. If I were you, I'd be more worried about Riley."
"Oh god Riley!"
"I shouldn't have brought that up, should I?"
"What on earth am I going to say to him?" Buffy was open-mouthed in horror.
"Who's Riley?" Spike asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice.
"Buffy's boyfriend," Willow explained.
"Hey! You're married to me; you can't go round having boyfriends all over the place!"
"Spike shut up! I am married to you only as long as it takes Willow to fix it, and don't pretend that's not exactly what you want too." Their eyes met and held in a mutual glare. Buffy stuck her tongue out at Spike.
"I'm hungry," Spike complained, "Anyone to eat around here, Rupert?"
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't stake him, Giles," Buffy said, not taking her eyes off Spike, "Then all our problems would be solved at once. I'll be a merry widow." she smiled at Spike, enjoying his discomfort.
"Don't be rash, Buffy," Giles said, "Without a death certificate you would be legally married to Spike even after you staked him. And we still need to find out about the initiative."
"Yeah," Spike said, sticking his tongue out at Buffy.
"You two are giving me a headache," Giles said, rubbing his temples, "This is back to exactly the way things were before, you'd think being married might have made you a little more responsible!"
"Very funny, Giles," Buffy said sarcastically, "I'm going to meet Riley at the Bronze. Wil, you had better come up with a way to fix this."
"Wait a minute," Spike called after her, "You're leaving me on our wedding night?"
*
"I don't understand you, Buffy Summers," Riley said as they danced close together, "One minute you're really distant and the next you're here in my arms."
"Yeah, well, I'm...kinda complicated."
"Complicated? I guess I can deal." Buffy thought about exactly how complicated her life was, and wondered if he really could deal. She rested her head lightly on Riley's shoulder, then sprang up suddenly as if she had seen a ghost - or another kind of undead creature...
"Look, Riley, I just got to take care of something, back in a sec."
"See what I mean, you're..." he trailed off as Buffy left him alone on the dance floor.
Buffy marched over to Spike who was swigging from a bottle of beer as he leant watching the dancing crowd.
"What are you doing?" she demanded.
"Um, having a drink, pet. Not illegal, is it, I am over 21, after all."
"What are you doing here?"
"Well if I want to drink, I need a bar, don't I?"
"Something wrong with Willie's?"
"I'm not exactly going to go there and advertise that I'm off my game, am I, love?"
"But do you need to be here?"
"But Buffy, the Bronze is the only cool place in Sunnydale," he said, mockingly.
"Just leave, Spike."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want you here."
"What makes you think I give a monkey’s about what you want, Slayer?" she was rattled.
"Because -"
"Don't say you'll stake me, cos I know you won’t,"
She sighed, knowing he was right. She decided to try reasoning with him. "Spike, I am here on a date. Is it too much to ask for some privacy?"
"Oh, right, you want me, your lawful wedded husband to go off so you can have privacy for you date?" he asked sarcastically. Ok, Buffy thought, reasoning had not been a good move.
"You don't have a better nature to appeal to, do you Spike?"
He was suddenly serious, "I do, actually, love. Not that you'd ever take the time to find out."
They looked at each other for a moment. Spike broke the silence, "I'll just go over and introduce myself to your boy, shall I?"
"No, Spike, please!" she had no doubt he would; he had little or no regard for her feelings of mortification. She had spoken too loud. Riley began walking over. She exchanged a panicked glance with Spike. "Spike, please, swear you won't tell!"
"And what do I get in return?"
"I won't kill you?" Buffy tried.
"You won't anyway."
"God, Spike, what do you want? Money?" she looked desperate. The hunter in him enjoyed the look of panic in her eyes. He smiled. He could make her promise him anything...
"A kiss."
"What?"
"You heard."
"But you don't even -"
"He's coming over."
"I won't!"
"Tick tock, Slayer."
"You'll pay for this!"
"What's it to be?" Riley was there.
"Don't say anything." she whispered furiously.
"Buffy, are you alright?" Riley was concerned.
"Yeah, fine." she smiled brightly.
"Is there a problem?" he looked Spike up and down. I could rip your heart out, boy, Spike thought, if it wasn't for this sodding chip.
"No, everything's cool. You wanna dance?"
"Ok." he glanced quizzically at Spike again. Buffy obviously wasn't going to introduce them. He allowed Buffy to lead him back onto the dance floor. Spike gazed after them in satisfaction. He had beaten the Slayer, he had made her uncomfortable. He downed the rest of his bottle and headed back to the bar.
*
"Well, that was another interesting evening," Riley said, "You want me to walk you home?"
"Er, actually, I'm not going back to campus," Buffy said, "I'm meeting my - er - book club."
"You're in a book club? It will take me a long time to work you out!"
"Hey! Why shouldn't I be in a book club?" Buffy pouted.
"No, no reason," Riley said, "You just seem more of an, um, outdoor kind of girl."
As they got to Giles' front door, they paused. Riley leaned in and kissed her...on the cheek.
"Taking things slow. Ok," he said, "See you around then, Buffy." Buffy cursed to herself. Why had she turned her head at the last moment? Because when she thought of kissing she could only think of the passionate kisses - no, not passionate, sloppy - kisses she had shared with Spike while under the influence of Willow's spell. And...Oh god, the kiss she had promised him.
"Well, Slayer?" she almost jumped out of her skin.
"Don't sneak up on me!"
"Whatever!" He lit up a cigarette and leaned against the wall of the house, looking at her.
"Stop that!"
"Stop what?"
"Stop looking at me."
"Why?" She blushed, not really knowing why. What was it about Spike that got her so worked up? It hadn't been like this before the spell, she decided. Or had it? Maybe the spell had just made her more aware of it...whatever 'it' was. Spike stepped closer to her, grinding out his cigarette on the floor. He put one hand firmly on her face and brought his own closer to hers. Buffy jerked away,
"What are you doing?"
"You promised me a kiss, remember?" She remembered. He moved in closer. Buffy felt her heart beating faster and wished that it wouldn't do that.
"You're only doing this because you know I don't want you to," she said defiantly. He leaned in and whispered in her ear,
"No, love, I know that you really do want me to, that's why I'm not going to," and he pulled away, laughing softly. Buffy was left alone and bewildered, her heart hammering against her chest and a vague feeling of humiliation and rejection washing over her when Spike came back, kissed her swiftly and roughly on the lips and melted away into the night.
*
Chapter 2: You're bait. Go act baity
"I hate you."
"The feeling's more than mutual, sweet pea." and Spike blew her a kiss. Giles had his head in his hands.
"Can you two stop bickering for two seconds together? I swear I'm going to crash your heads together if this carries on a minute more."
"I think its sweet," Xander said, "You're just like a regular married couple - only you aren't throwing things at each other." Both Buffy and Spike glared at him.
"I'm to take that nobody has a plan, then," Giles sighed.
"I've got a plan," Willow said, "I looked into it last night and the easiest option is probably to apply for an annulment on the grounds of non-consummation."
"Non what?" asked Buffy.
"Consummation. It means, uh, you know." Willow blushed
"She means sex." Anya offered helpfully.
"You guys didn't..." Willow began.
"No! A world of no!" Buffy exclaimed, "Ew!"
"Well that is certainly a relief," Giles said, "But I was talking about a plan for dealing with the initiative."
"I got a plan." Spike volunteered.
"Well, there are no better offers, so we'd better hear it," Giles said.
"We kidnap Nancy boy Riley and make him tell us everything we know about the Initiative." There was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it," Willow said, as the others stared at Spike in disbelief.
"Spike," Buffy began, "Riley is-”
"Here." Willow announced, opening the door to admit Riley Finn.
"Riley!" Buffy said, jumping up in confusion, "What are you doing here?"
"I'm not sure whether that qualifies as pleased to see me or not," Riley said, "Which Buffy are you today?" His glance took in the room, Giles, Xander, Anya, the books on the table. "This really is a book group, isn't it?" he frowned as he recognised Spike. "What is...?"
"Uh, everybody, this is Riley, Riley this is everybody." A silence hung over the room.
Then Spike interrupted it by asking,
"So, Riley, how's the Initiative?"
"Outside, now!" Buffy shouted, and practically dragged Spike from the room.
"Easy, love. Just can't keep your hands off me, can you?"
"Spike you idiot! How could you be so stupid?"
"What's the matter?"
"Look, I'm not happy about you tagging along to our Scooby meetings, but the least you could do is to keep some secrecy. Do you want everyone to know you're a helpless vampire?" she toned her voice down to a hiss. "What if Riley really is in the Initiative and -”
"Aha, so you admit the possibility!"
"I admit nothing!"
"Not even that this was a whole excuse to get away from Riley and get me alone?"
"Why would I want to do that?" Buffy was flushed, her heart beating faster against her will.
"So I can do this," Spike leaned in and kissed her. It was slower than the kiss last night, gentler but still hot. Buffy just had time to register how good it felt before she stopped it, punching Spike on the nose for good measure.
"Ow! Bloody hell!" Buffy returned to the front room,
"Sorry about that. I'm sorry, Riley," she said, slipping onto the arm of his chair, "He really has no manners at all."
"It’s ok," Riley said. He seemed distracted, "Look, Buffy, I uh - I need to cancel our date tonight. I've - uh - got stuff to take care of."
"Sure," Buffy said, seeing him out. He kissed her, this time on the lips but it felt cool and awkward compared to the fire of Spike's kiss in the kitchen earlier. Buffy bit her lip, knowing she should not be having such thoughts.
*
Buffy and Willow sat at a table in the Bronze while Xander and Anya danced.
"Still not heard from Riley?" Willow asked.
"Well, he phoned, but he's been kind of...distant. Said he might show up tonight"
"Maybe he thinks he's playing you at your own game."
"What do you mean?"
"Well - telling him you were engaged and then that it was just a joke and you must have done a bit of disappearing on, you know, *official* business..."
"Maybe. You know, I begin to wonder if Giles wasn't right."
"Right?"
"About Owen that time - you remember? How it would be really difficult to have a relationship with someone not aware of my slayer status."
"Give it a chance. At least - if you like Riley, you should. You do like Riley, right?"
"Yeah..." Buffy replied, not sounding as convincing as she might have done, distracted at that moment by the appearance of a certain blonde vampire whose presence made her breathing inexplicably difficult. "I'm just going to, uh, you know," Buffy told Willow as she rose and crossed to where Spike was standing. Before he could say anything she had her hand around his throat, pushing him against the wall. "What do you think you're doing here?" she demanded, "Is this going to happen every time I go out? Are you like my stalker now?"
"Self obsessed much?" he said, "Bloody hell, Slayer, put me down." She did as he said, realising they were attracting odd looks. "Just can't keep your hands off me, can you?"
"You are so deluded," she said.
"Yeah, cos I'd have no reason to think you wanted me, after you kissed me twice." he said sarcastically.
"You kissed me, Spike, that's how I remember it."
"Whatever turns you on, pet." he raised an eyebrow suggestively. Buffy clenched her hands in fury. What was wrong with him? How could he make these suggestions? How was it that the thought of anything between them didn't sicken him? How come it doesn't sicken you? asked a traitorous voice in her head.
"Buffy?" It was Willow. "Giles just called. He wants us to meet him at his house."
"I'll get my coat," Buffy said quickly, relieved to be freed from the increasingly tense situation with Spike.
*
"Ok, Giles, this had better be important..."
"A secret army base carrying out suspicious research into demons here in Sunnydale? I'd say that was a sight more important than you having fun at the Bronze, wouldn't you?"
"Yeah, but...any new developments?" Willow asked.
"I've got a plan." .............
(ten minutes later…)
............."That is not a plan!" Spike protested.
"Spike, nobody asked you to follow us here, but since you are here, you might as well make yourself useful." Buffy said.
"I'm not going out there like a worm on a bloody hook! What's supposed to happen if they take the bait?"
"Then they'll have showed themselves," Willow explained.
"And what happens to me?"
"Unavoidable casualties?" Buffy said innocently.
"No bloody way - Giles!"
"Er, Buffy will make sure nothing will befall you. Won't you Buffy."
"If I have to." Buffy said reluctantly, rolling her eyes. Spike glared at her.
"Bloody brilliant."
*
Buffy and Spike stood in the cemetery waiting for the Initiative to show up.
"Come on, Slayer, admit it!"
"Admit what? Look, Spike, if you think I'm going to pretend I have any feelings for you-"
"I meant, admit you think this a lame plan, but if you've got anything else you'd like to get off your chest...your shirt, perhaps?"
"You're sick, Spike." Buffy said, blushing furiously. "About time you started acting a bit more...baity, don't you think?"
"What am I supposed to do, exactly?" Spike stood up and began to walk around, "Hello?" he called, "Initiative? Soldier boys? Vampire here, come and get me! Roll up, roll up!"
"Spike that is so....actually going to work!" Buffy said, eyes wide as several men in green uniforms crashed through the bushes. Buffy sprang to her feet as Spike dived out of the line of fire.
"Buffy?"
"Riley?" They stared at each other in confusion. Buffy hoped that Spike had the good sense to stay hidden.
"Stand down, men, false alarm." Riley commanded. "Look, Buffy, it’s not safe for you to be out here tonight. Let me walk you home. Men, keep searching, I'll escort this lady home." a few sniggers greeted this last statement, but the men in green melted away into the bushes as commanded.
"Well, isn't this grand," Spike said, standing up and dusting himself off, "I hate to say I told you say, Slayer....Wait, who am I kidding, I..."
"Shut up, Spike!"
"Spike?" Riley asked, something stirring deep in the recesses of his brain.
"Look," said Buffy, "Why don't you escort me home, like you said, and we'll talk about this."
"Sure," said Riley, glancing suspiciously at the smirking Spike.
"This is gonna be fun!" Spike said, lighting a cigarette.
*
There was an uncomfortable silence as they all stared at each other, back in Giles's apartment.
"So...." Riley began, but trailed off.
"So, you're with the Initiative, just like Spike said," Anya said brightly.
"Um...."
"Its ok, Riley, we know about the Initiative."
"What...exactly...do you know?"
"It’s a secret military operation which captures demons and vampires and does experiments on them, some of which render them unable to hurt humans."
"Ok, quite a lot. And you all....This s going to be difficult to cover up. Guess we're not as top secret as we thought...How do you..." Giles stepped in,
"You've probably realised that we are not an ordinary book group -"
"Yeah, knew something was wrong with that," Riley muttered.
"Hey!" Buffy protested.
"We have an - er - an interest in the paranormal and other...strange happenings."
"Plus, Buffy's the Slayer." Anya added helpfully. Giles glared at her.
*
Chapter 3: On the Porch
"Plus, Buffy's the Slayer." Anya added helpfully. Giles glared at her.
"The what?"
"It’s a whole thing," Buffy said, shrugging, "One girl chosen to fight the vampires yadda yadda yadda."
"Oh."
"The rest of us are completely human, though, and do not interest you in the slightest," Anya persisted.
"Ahn, I don't think Jedi mind tricks are gonna work..." Xander suggested.
"Why not?" Spike asked, slyly, "I thought they worked well on the weak minded?"
"I'm still trying to figure out where you fit into all this, Spike," Riley said, narrowing his eyes menacingly.
"Spike's married to Buffy," Anya said.
"Ok!" Xander jumped up, "Ahn, you and I are going home to have another of those little chats about when you shouldn't say stuff."
"But I was telling the truth! That's good, right?"
"We're leaving!" So they left. Riley stared at Buffy accusingly.
"So, when I ran into you last week and you said you were engaged..."
"I think Willow can explain everything." Buffy said, trying just a bit too hard to smile. “Willow?"
Willow laughed sheepishly.
"Ok, the thing is....I cast a spell?"
"A spell?" Riley asked disbelievingly, "You're what? A witch?"
"Uh, yeah."
"You expect me to believe..."
"You deal with vampires and demons yet you doubt the possibility of witches?" Giles asked.
"That's different," Riley explained, "Vampires, demons...they're just animals..."
"Hey!" Spike said, sounding wounded. Buffy gave him a warning look.
"Well, you're going to have to start believing," Willow said, "I'm a witch, I can do spells...I cast a spell which, um, somehow ended up with Buffy and Spike getting married. But it was really just the spell; we're working on a way to get an annulment. It’s not like they have feelings for each other." Buffy looked almost involuntarily at Spike, and was surprised at the intensity with which he returned her look. She caught her breath. Spike couldn't have feelings for her...could he?
"Ok," Riley said, "Its going to take me a while to process all this...I'm going to have to...You won't mention any of this...initiative business?"
"If you don't mention any Slayer business." Giles replied, arms folded, looking serious. Riley nodded, an agreement had been reached.
Buffy ran after Riley, catching up with him on the porch.
"You ok?"
"I...Honestly? I'm not sure...it's a lot to take in. You're a Slayer? And your friends are witches and paranormal investigators...?"
"What about you?" Buffy demanded, "You and your friends are part of some top secret military operation that has to do with vampires and demons on my hellmouth?" She thought for a moment, "I really did just say my hellmouth, didn't I?"
"Ok, I guess we both have much more complicated, strange lives than the other one thought."
"Its kind of funny if you think of it that way," Buffy said, "I mean, I thought you were Mr. Ordinary, when really you're commando guy..."
"And I thought you were just a sweet - if a little mad - college girl, when really you're...married."
"Yes, but not really!" Buffy protested, "Just a spell. Only not in the eyes of the law," she added, wrinkling her brow.
"You honestly don't feel anything for this...Spike?"
"No! A world of no!" Her denial didn't sound wholeheartedly convincing to her own ears, "He's..." Evil? "Annoying." she concluded.
"Annoying?" Riley raised an eyebrow.
"And....and blonde." she added, lamely. Vampire, the word is vampire, she told herself. But for some reason, in spite of the evening's bait plan, she didn't think it was the best idea to let Riley know what Spike really was. "Trust me, Riley, he's not my type." Vampire? Not your type? Since when? asked an annoying voice in her head.
"Ok, well, Buffy, I really have to be heading back to base. I'll...I'll see you tomorrow in class."
"Class, sure," Buffy said, "See you." Riley leaned in and kissed her, his tongue felt heavy in her mouth and Buffy almost felt like screaming for breath.
Then he was gone, blending quickly into the background in his combat fatigues.
"What is wrong with me?" Buffy wondered out loud.
"You're in denial," said a voice beside her.
"Spike! How long have you been lurking there?"
"Long enough to see that captain cardboard can't kiss for toffee."
"That's such a stupid saying, Spike, why would anyone want to kiss for toffee?"
"No, what's stupid is why would anyone want to kiss that big stupid oaf?"
"What have you got against Riley?"
"I told you, he's an oaf." He turned to face her.
"Oh my god, are you jealous?"
"Please! Why would I be jealous of that, that...Muppet!" he was almost shouting now. "I'm twice the man he is!"
"Spike you're a vampire!" Buffy hissed, "You're not a man at all!"
"I'm all man, sweetheart; do I have to prove it to you?"
"I'd like to see you try!" Oh my god, she thought, am I encouraging him? Buffy thought. She felt the rising excitement their fights always heightened. They were close, now, inches apart.
"Tell me captain cardboard's a better kisser than me and I'll leave you alone." Spike said. Buffy opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. "Just can't lie, can you, love?"
"No," Buffy breathed, not even sure what she meant by the word. Spike closed the gap between them, smashing his mouth against hers, lips devouring hers. Buffy felt hot and feverish as he crushed her between the wall and his body. She could feel his desire with every fibre of her body, and every fibre of her body responded with an equal desire. She had never been kissed this way and she never wanted it to end. She found herself kissing him back, hungrily, desperately, wanting him, needing him...
"God, Buffy, I lo..." Suddenly he broke the kiss, and Buffy leant against the wall, trembling.
"Don't stop," she begged, breathlessly. He looked at her longingly, almost sadly.
"See, told you I was a better kisser, pet," he said, but without the hint of triumph she had expected.
"Spike..."
"Don't!" his voice was suddenly harsh and bitter, "Just leave me alone. Stop...tormenting me!" and he left her, again, on the porch, her body tingling with the memory of their kiss, confused and hurt by his sudden change in manner.
*
Spike couldn't sleep. Partly of course, it was that Giles's bathtub wasn't exactly the most comfy place for a good day's rest, even if he wasn't chained up anymore. Mostly, though, it was Buffy. He couldn't stop thinking about her. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her face. He was drowning in her. It had all started with that stupid spell - making him realise just how attracted he was to her. Even then, though, it had been a game, teasing her, trying to prove that she wanted him, but now...he was confused. He was a vampire. But he had feelings for her. He'd had feelings for Dru, of course, but that had been different. This was...wrong. He knew that. But every time he told himself that, the image of Buffy appeared in his head, taunting him, he could taste her on his lips, smell her scent, vanilla...it was driving him mad!
Uncomfortable, Spike tossed and turned in the bathtub until something struck him. He didn't have to be here! He could just leave, leave Giles's house, leave Sunnyhell...then he remembered the chip. But he could go where no vamps knew him, steal blood when he could. It was a mean existence but a small price to pay for getting Buffy out of his head once and for all. Spike's mind was made up. As soon as dark fell, he was leaving.
