{Paul walks in.}

P: "If Angel hadn’t been there I would have taken care of you Buffy, you know that."

{Buffy, Willow and Giles look surprised at Paul’s appearance, but Xander had seen him before he spoke up.}

B: "I’m sure you would have tried Paul."

{Buffy sounds like she’s trying to placate a child after a tantrum. Paul knows it but can’t think of anything to say to convince Buffy.}

"Buffy?"

{Paul looks around at Giles, Willow and Xander. When they don’t move away Paul sighs.}

"Would you like to go to the Bronze with me tonight?"

B: "Not really I’ll see you there though. I’ll be meeting Angel. My boyfriend. "

P: "Right. Umm. . . Will you show where homeroom is again I forgot."

B: "Sure let’s go. See you tonight guys. I’ll read some tonight Mr. Giles with Angel."

G: "Sounds good Buffy. Be sure your here after school for our appointment."

B: "Sure, I’ll be here."

{Buffy starts to leave with Paul behind her.}

G: "And no dawdling with your friends."

B: "Yes."

{Buffy says over shoulder as she leaves. Waving to Giles without looking backwards. Giles sighs. Now it’s nighttime at the Bronze Buffy is sitting at their table waiting for Angel. There is no sign of Cordelia or Oz. Paul walks up behind Buffy.}

B: "Hello Paul."

P: "How did you know it was me?"

B: "Your walk."

{Paul looks confused. But he shrugs and walks around so that he’s facing Buffy.}

P: "Do you want to dance?"

B: "Paul I . . . Hey Lover!"

{Paul looks confused then sees Angel right behind him. He does not look pleased.}

A: "Let’s dance."

B: "Sure love."

A: "He’s still following you."

B: "I know. I don’t know how to get him to stop."

A: "I have an idea."

{They had reached the dance floor. Buffy looks up at him with a question in her eyes.}

"Dance with me like you did with Xander."

{Buffy’s eyes widen.}

B: "I’m never going to live that down am I?"

{Angel shakes his head and smiles.}

"I guess it’s only fair that we dance that way. But only this one time!"

A: "Of course."

{Buffy starts to do the ‘sexy dance’ with Angel. She is obviously having more fun dancing with Angel then she did with Xander. Willow leaves to go to the washroom. Paul sits down next to Xander. Paul is drooling.}

X: "She danced with me like that once."

{Paul looks jealous and mad.}

"She never did that though."

{Paul doesn’t look to see what ‘that’ is. Paul gets up and goes over to the counter to get something to drink.}

A: "He’s left."

{Angel sounds a little out of breath. Buffy keeps dancing.}

A: "Buffy?"

B: "Ummmmm?"

A: "Paul left."

{Angel’s voice is sounding a little more strained.}

B: "Ohh! You want me to stop doing this?"

{Buffy dances up against him again.}

A: "Yeah that would be what I want you to stop!"

{Buffy smiles. She leans up and kisses Angel.}

B: "Alright I’ll stop."

{She takes Angel’s hand and leads him back to the table. Willow takes Paul’s chair, and Angel pulls up a chair of his own.}

W: "So Angel have you heard anything? It’s been quiet lately."

A: "I haven’t heard anything about any shipments our any unusual activity lately. Has Giles found any prophecies we should worry about?"

B: "Not that he’s told me about. We’ll just have to wait and see if Spike and Dru are up to anything paranormal."

W: "I heard about last night Angel. Were you scared?"

A: "Not at all that little twerp made so much noise it was easy to tell that he was following me."

{Paul was going to come out but after he hears this he waits to here what happens next.}

W: "I was talking about the muggers."

A: "Oh I’m not worried about anyone but Spike and Dru."

{Paul walks out the door. He walks out to the warehouse where the Slayerettes said the Vamps hung out. By some miracle he makes it inside. He meets a lackey vamp.}

P: "I need to see Spike."

{The vampire is about to eat Paul.}

"It’s about Angel."

{The vampire stops grabs Paul by the back of the neck, and drags him to the meeting room. Spike is sitting there and yells at the Vamp for disturbing him.}

S: "What do you think your doing in here. I said that I wasn’t to be disturbed for anything. Take him away I’m not hungry."

{Spike pauses.}

"Take him to Dru she hasn’t eaten tonight."

Lackey: "He said he needed to see you, that it was about Angel."

{Druscilla walks in. Spike thinks about it. Then he sees Dru and wheels over to her.}

S: "What are you doing here love? I was just about to send you a snack."

{Spike gestures to Paul. Paul finally understands that he is the ‘snack’ and starts to struggle against the vamp holding him.}

D: "No he will be useful."

S: "What do you see, pet?"

D: "He will be entertaining."

S: "It has been rather dull lately round here. Why not?"

{Spike wheels over toward Paul.}

"Leave us. Make sure all the exits are covered."

{The vamp nods and leaves.}

"So you said that you wanted to talk?"

{Paul nods.}

"Then talk."

P: "I need help to get Angel."

{Spike and Druscilla look at each other.}

S: "Why come to us?"

P: "I overheard him say that the only people he was worried about hurting him were Spike and Dru."

D: "He does remember us Spike how lovely."

S: "Yes pet, lovely. So why do you want to get him?"

P: "That’s my business. Let’s just say I need him out of the way."

S: "Well the only person who could get rid of Angel would be the Slayer."

{Spike looks at Paul to see if he knows who the Slayer is. He doesn’t}

P: "Great! Where can I find him?"

D: "Hah! I knew this would be fun. He doesn’t know. The Slayer is a girl. And she’s not going to help you kill Angel."

P: "Why?"

D: "She’s too busy kissing him!"

{Druscilla laughs.}

P: "He’s cheating on Buffy! ? !"

S: "No you imbecile! Buffy is the Slayer!"

{Paul looks shocked.}

P: "How do I get rid of Angel then?"

{Spike laughs.}

S: "I like him his goal orientated."

P: "I can’t do it."

D: "A demon could do it"

{Paul looks happy. Spike is worried.}

S: "Love even if he was a vampire Angel would beat him. Angelus is very strong. A newbie vamp couldn’t kill him maybe in a couple hundred years he could do it. But not right now."

D: "There are other kinds of demons."

{Spike smiles.}

S: "What kinds?"

{Druscilla starts to think out loud.}

D: "Something sneaky, that can be out in the light . . ."

P: "Why does it have to be sneaky?"

S: "You’d never be able to beat him with only strength you’ll have to trick him."

D: "I know! Oh love it will be perfect! I just need my book."

S: "Carrie!"

{A young vampire runs in and up to Spike.}

"Get Dru’s book."

{The vamp nods and runs away. A few moments later she comes running back in she places the book in front of Dru and then backs away quickly. Dru opens the book and then looks at Paul she starts to chant.}

D: "Paul do you want to get rid of Angelus?"

{Paul looking confused nods. Spike nudges him.}

P: "I do?"

{Druscilla nods.}

D: "Oh dark lords help this your servant,"

{Dru gestures toward Paul.}

"in this evil desire to destroy our lost brother,"

{Dru snarls.}

"Angelus. To help reach his goal please . . ."

{This goes on for a long while then Dru ends on a dramatic gesture and Paul screams and falls to the floor and Druscilla laughs. The next day at school outside in the courtyard, Buffy and Willow are sitting outside on the bench. Paul walks out from the shadows almost invisible.}

B: "I had so much fun last night."

W: "You mean with doing the sexy dance with Angel."

B: "UmmUhhmmm."

{Willow laughs.}

B: "After all that ‘dancing’ I had great dreams."

{Paul walks out in front of her.}

P: "Hey Buffy."

B: "Ohh Paul I didn’t see you!"

P: "I know."

{Buffy looks nonplused but shrugs.}

B: "I didn’t see you again last night, after I came back from dancing with Angel. You weren’t jealous of him, were you?"

P: "What’s to be jealous of?"

B: "Sure. Anyway look who’s coming over."

{Willow looks around, she looks at Buffy and shrugs.}

"Our fav lead guitarist."

W: "Where?"

O: "Right here."

{Willow turns around and smiles at Oz. He leans forward and kisses her. Buffy smiles at the couple. Then turns and waves Xander over.}

X: "Hey Paul."

P: "Yeah hey Xander."

{Paul isn’t paying much attention to Xander. He is sitting on the bench sunning himself and getting increasingly mellow and hard to see. Xander shakes his head looks at Willow and Oz blushes and looks at Buffy.}

X: "Those two need to get a room."

B: "I think it’s cute."

{Willow and Oz finally realize that they are the topic of their friends discussion. Willow pulls away and blushes and Oz smiles without a care in the world. Buffy looks at Paul. He is nearly asleep on the bench. It would also be very hard to see him if you didn’t know he was there. Buffy gestures to the others to move away. They all move away from Paul. Giles was walking toward them before and changes his course to keep up with him.}

B: "Have you noticed anything strange about Paul today?"

W: "What do you mean?"

B: "He’s nearly asleep right there on the bench."

X: "So he had a long night."

B: "He snuck up on me."

X: "So?"

B: "Only Angel has been able to do that before."

X: "Well he’s out in the sunlight. So he’s not a vampire."

G: "There are demons that are not Vampires."

B: "Could he be something like that?"

G: "What’s different about him?"

B: "Well he mellows out in the sun. So much that he is almost asleep. Also he seems to be blending in with his surroundings."

X: "Sounds like a chamaeleon."

{Everyone looks at Xander as if he had grown a third head.}

"A lizard."

G: "We know what a chamaeleon is. It’s just . . ."

{Giles pauses.}

"How do you know?"

X: "What now I can’t know anything?"

B: "No it’s just . . ."

X: "I know, I know!!"

G: "I’ll check out if he could have been cursed or some such. I’ll expect all of you today after school for research duty."

{Giles pauses.}

"Except Buffy of course. You need to patrol. Now all of you should be going to your homeroom classes."

W: "What about Paul? Do we just leave him here?"

G: "Until we know what if anything has happened to him, he should be treated as any other vampire or demon. Avoid him if possible if not get away from him as soon as possible and don’t get too close."

{Everyone except Xander nods and agrees.}

X: "He hasn’t done anything to deserve that kind of treatment!"

G: "He also hasn’t done anything to disprove it."

{Xander obviously doesn’t agree but seeing that Giles won’t be shaken he shakes his head and gives up. Everyone walks away to their classes, leaving Paul basking in the sun. That night at the Bronze Buffy is waiting for Angel. Everyone else is researching at the library. Outside the Bronze Angel is walking up to the front door. Off of the wall Paul comes out of nowhere from behind. Paul’s body is longer he has a small tail that is starting to show and if you look at his eyes you would see that they can rotate independently of each other. They are bulging out of his sockets and he’s eyelids are dropping down over his eyes. Once he is on Angel’s back he uses his tongue to wrap around him. Angel easily shakes him off. Paul scurries around in front of Angel. Paul backs up. Angel presses his advantage and backs Paul inside the building.}

A: "What did you do Paul?"

{Angel keeps moving forward and Paul keeps backing up.}

"Who did you go to? Huh?"

{Paul has moved backwards into the middle of the dance floor. The small crowd at the Bronze runs out of the doors. Except for Buffy who walks up behind Paul.}

B: "Angel what happened?"

A: "He attacked me outside the Bronze. Do you know what he did to himself?"

B: "Giles and the gang is working on it. You think he did it on purpose?"

A: "That’s the only way."

{Paul has gotten tired of Angel and Buffy talking about him he starts to lunge forward at Angel, but Buffy grabs him by the small tail. Paul breaks his tail off in Buffy’s hand.}

B: "EWWWWW!"

{Buffy drops the tail. At the loud sound Paul enlarges his body and hisses at both of them he backs around so that Buffy and Angel are in front of him.}

{A few minutes before in the library of the school the gang is researching. Willow is reading a book at the head of the table Xander and Cordelia are sitting together reading one book. Or trying to. Oz is on the other side of the table on Willow’s right. Giles is pacing with a book in one hand his glasses in the other.}

W: "I think I’ve found something. But it’s not a curse he’d have to volunteer to do it. And it would have to be for a specific mission. Once that was accomplished . . ."

X: "Yes?"

W: "Once he finished what he had set out to do he would die. This can’t be what happened to Paul he wouldn’t agree to any of this."

G: "He wouldn’t necessarily know. Would you trust Dru and Spike to tell he the whole truth?"

W: "No. But once he’s participated he can’t go back even if he achieves his goal he dies."

G: "How do we get rid of him?"

W: "I doesn’t say exactly. It says that the person takes on the characteristics of the chosen reptile. In this case the chamaeleon. I don’t know how to kill a human sized lizard."

X: "I think a crossbow through the heart would work just as well on him as anyone else." ,br> {Xander having discovered that his ‘friend’ had agreed to this, had no sympathy left for him.}

W: "The question is where is he?"

X: "The Bronze!"

W: "Why would you say that?"

X: "I’m pretty sure that Paul’s ‘goal’ has something to do with Buffy who is . . ."

W: "At the Bronze! Let’s go!"

{The gang grab crossbows and other weapons out Giles’ school arsenal and run out he door to the Bronze. Meanwhile back at the Bronze , Buffy and Angel are still fighting Paul.}

B: "How could they do this to him?"

{Buffy sounds angry. She punches Paul and then ducks and rolls to avoid his tongue.}

A: "They couldn’t."

{Angel has to stop his explanation to duck. While he’s down he rams himself against Paul.}

B: "What do ya mean?"

{Buffy is starting to sound out of breath. Paul falls backward toward Buffy. Buffy jumps him from behind.}

A: "He’d have to agree to have this done to him."

{Paul shakes Buffy off and runs to the side so he can look at both Buffy and Angel. Paul looks at Buffy.}

P: "Buffffy."

{Paul’s voice has a definite lizard like sound.}

"Bufffy, get out offf hereee. I don’t want to hhurt you."

{Paul turns to Angel.}

"I onlly want himmm."

B: "Too bad. ‘Cause I’m not leaving without him."

{Paul turns to look at Buffy.}

P: "Whhy? What’s sooo good about him?"

{Cordelia, Willow, Xander, Oz and Giles all walk in as Paul is talking.}

B: "He’s gorgeous and mysterious . . ."

{As Buffy is talking she is walking backwards toward the stage. Buffy gives Willow and Cordelia a look that says follow my lead. Giles looks questioningly at Buffy who gestures with her head towards stage left.}

W: "Buffy’s right he’s gorgeous."

{Willow looks at Oz who at first seems mad but nods when Willow looks at him.}

C: "Oh yeah! It’s that tall dark brooding look."

{Willow and Cordelia are heading backwards toward the stage. Buffy is already there. Giles has walked around behind everyone as quietly as possible. Angel is looking confused at all of the attention he’s getting. Xander is mad and is starting to say something when Oz stomps on his foot.}

X: "It drives me crazy! The girls are always falling all over him."

{Xander gives Oz a look that says you better agree with me.}

O: "I’ve given up trying to compete. It doesn’t matter what I do, I lose."

{Buffy, Cordelia and Willow are backed up against the stage. Paul has walked forward to follow the girls. Xander and Oz join Angel behind Paul. Paul is again blending into the background. He’s almost invisible.}

P: "Youu only want himm ‘cause he’ss a demon. You all get a thhrill from that."

{Paul is advancing on the girls with the guys following close behind. Buffy appears to be waiting.}

B: "Is that why you became a demon to get girls?"

{Paul stands his ground.}

"It won’t work. If we all like Angel because he’s a demon, it’s for the tragedy of it. There’s no tragedy in your story you choose to be the way you are."

{Paul is getting even more angry.}

"You won’t get the girls or me. And you’ll still be a lizard."

{Paul starts to take a step forward and say something. But Buffy interrupts him.}

"Now Giles!"

{Giles starts to flash the stage lights on Paul. Every possible color is flashing onto him. Paul is trying to keep his camouflage up by changing colors. But the colors are changing so quickly that it takes all of his concentration to do it. While he’s distracted Buffy gives him a kick to the head breaking his neck. Giles stops flashing the lights and gets off of the stage. Willow and Cordelia go over to their respective boyfriends.}

W: "I’m so sorry Oz! You know . . ."

O: "I know."

W: "No offense Angel, but your not my type."

{Angel smiles at Willow and nods. Oz puts his arm around Willow and they leave.}

C: "Well he’s my type."

{Xander looks at Cordelia with murder in his eyes.}

"But your taken. And the whole creature of the night thing is very uncool."

{Xander still looks mad but he is pacified. Cordelia leans forward and they kiss. After a while Giles coughs embarrassed they break apart. They leave holding hands. Behind them Paul’s body is changing back to normal.}

G: "I’d better go make an anonymous phone call to the authorities. I suggest that you two remove yourselves from the crime scene before that time."

{Angel nods and takes Buffy’s hand to lead her away she is staring at Paul’s body. Angel takes them to the cemetery. He sits the still shocked Buffy down on the bench then sits down beside her.}

A: "I’m sorry Buffy you shouldn’t have had to do that."

{Buffy starts to say something but Angel stops her.}

"No, I mean it’s horrible to have killed someone you know."

B: "That’s not it. At the end he was just a demon that had to be killed. What I can’t believe is that. . . He did it for me. He became a demon to get me! I don’t want that kind of responsibility."

A: "You had nothing to do with it. You didn’t encourage him in fact you did that . . .dance. . . with me to discourage him. You couldn’t have made it any clearer. You wanted nothing to do with him."

{Buffy had stayed silent through out this.}

"Right?"

{Angel sounds a little worried.}

B: "I don’t think I did. But what if I was giving him signals unconsciously?"

A: "You have nothing to worry about."

{Angel sounds relieved.}

"The guy was so delusional he probably thought that when you wore your hair up it meant you wanted him. If he hadn’t been obsessed with you it would have been some other girl who more than likely would have ended up calling the police on him. It’s not your fault!"

{Angel sounds angry when he says the last. He is stroking Buffy’s hair with his hand.}

B: "You always know what to say to make me feel better."

{Buffy smiles up at him.}

"I love you."

A: "I love you too."

{They kiss.}
