This Year’s Girl Episode Guide

Break Down

This was bound to be good, as it was written by Faith scribe, Douglas Petrie. He really knows how to tap into the character (IMO). I love this episode, but I also find the whole four (including Angel) episodes slightly annoying for one reason. It was more than clear in Graduation Day Part 2 that Faith and Buffy made up. Faith even helped Buffy (on the astral plane) by telling her the Mayor's weakness! However, it would seem that the producers and writers have far more fun with Faith 'on the dark side of the force' rather than pre-Bad Girls. Also, I suppose it's far more interesting for us (as viewers) to fully flesh out Faith's redemption. (Also, four whole episodes devoted to Faith is never a bad thing!)

So, it had to start somewhere, and what better place than right where Faith left off? On the astral plane! We see that Buffy and Faith initially are still O.K. In fact, both Slayers are talking about Dawn i.e.: 'Lil Sis'. However, the clever part is that even though things seem to be fine, Faith's still aware of the knife. Hence the dripping blood and Faith's question to Buffy about is she ever gonna take it out. The cue to the 'real' dream sequence lets us in on Faith's state of mind once she wakes. She's scared. Just like Faith, Hope and Trick. We've come full circle. Faith is running from someone she just couldn't defeat. (Kakistos in Faith, Hope & Trick and Buffy here). This time around though, she has no one to help her.

Add to the mix that she's still pretty messed up. Not only that, if Faith noticed what part of the hospital she was in, that'd also add to her hurt. Note that she's in a dilapidated part, where old records are kept. The tiles are old and cracked. The floor is concrete. What does that say about how people view her? To just put her in with old, useless stuff. It's not exactly a 'we love and miss you' environment.

What people have to realize is Faith's problems all stem from one thing and one thing only. She's terrified of being alone/lonely. To add to her terror, things have changed so much for her. The one person who cared for her is dead. She finds out that no-one visited her the whole time she was in a coma. By finding that out, we revisit the long running theme of Faith becoming furious via an emotional hurt. She also finds out that Angel, whom Buffy was all too willing to kill her for, is no longer in the picture. That's got to hurt her too. Essentially, Faith has confirmation that her life doesn't mean much, if it could be taken for a 'transient' boyfriend. There is one difference from Faith, Hope and Trick though. Thanks to the Mayor, Faith is slightly more confident than the young girl we met in FHT. Also, she believes she has nothing to lose in seeking vengeance on Buffy. Again, we revisit her belief that no one cares about her. Indeed, bitchy Buffy tells her so face to face! And Faith's speech to Joyce tells us what we knew. Faith feels totally betrayed by Buffy. "You think you matter, you think you're a part of something and then you get dumped!". I was SO glad to hear her say that, as it confirmed what we thought.

Faith was fitting in the Scooby Gang right up until Revelations where major damage was done. Despite Christmas with the Summers' and the pre-death joy of Slaying with Buffy in Bad Girls, Faith never got over being left out of the loop. Indeed, Tara says the same to Willow in 5th season. She doesn't feel part of the gang either. She actually says it's hard to 'fit in' because they're all so close. Where Faith went wrong was that she assumed Buffy would feel the same sisterhood that Faith was feeling. Revelations opened her eyes on that score. It also hurt her irrevocably. She mentions the animals in the tar pits as slowly sinking and no one noticing.

Indeed, a mega annoyance to me, is that no one cared about Faith. She came and went and at most, a sentence was devoted to her. "Where's Faith" - "On walkabout". Buffy, herself, even mentions that too much 'alone time' isn't good. And Willow thought they should socialize more with Faith. But, as I've stated before. It was all lip service. They never socialized with Faith. At most, we saw Faith collect Buffy for a night's patrol. Whether it was from 'the gang' or Angel. She was never with Buffy when night fell. The only socializing done was Faith's introduction and then when Buffy found the joy of abandonment in Bad Girls.

So, we have it all laid out for us. Faith thought she mattered and then truly believed she didn't. Buffy wasn't prepared to go to bat for her in Consequences either, and Faith called her on that at the time. It's so easy to see things from Faith's point of view. Unless your name is Buffy.
