<Episode 124: Beneath You>

Spike helps track a Tremors-like Slugoff demon.

Plot Highlights:

Buffy dreams of a german girl being killed. Spike stalks a rat, babbles. Xander drives Buffy & Dawn to school. Principal Wood chats with Buffy. Giles convinces Willow it's time to return to Sunnydale. Nancy's dog is eaten, she meets Xander and the gang. Spike offers his assistance. Dawn threatens Spike. Spike & Buffy investigate. Nancy hits on Xander, the underground demon attacks. The scoobies confront Anya. Anya notices Spike's soul, a melee ensues. Nancy flees, gets attacked again, Buffy & Spike intervene. Xander finally convinces Anya to turn the demon back to human, just as Spike is in the midst of skewering him. Spike goes nuts, babbles, runs off. Buffy catches up to him in a church, his secret comes out.

Memorable Moments:

• Principal Wood's 'boot, bat & bastinada' joke falling flat. Buffy's decision to keep quite as to Principal Flutie's fate.
• Giles convincing Willow that she must return to Sunnydale, whether or not her friends welcome her back.
• Spike showing up unexpectedly cleaned up, calmly and lucidly offering his help.
• Dawn threating Spike with a firey wake up call should he hurt her sister.
• Nancy's bemused "Is there anyone here that hasn't slept together?" eliciting a fleeting glance between Spike & Xander.
• Spike's horrified reaction to accidently skewering suddenly humanized Ronnie.
• And of course, the whole haunting final scene in the church, ending with Spike sprawled smoking on the cross, under Buffy's teary gaze, longing for forgiveness, love, rest.
