<Episode 3: In the Dark (Angel, the Series)>

EPISODE COLLAGE: In the Dark
Season: Episode 3 of Season 1
Original Air Date: 10/19/1999
Written by: Douglas Petrie
Directed by: Bruce Seth Green

Notes:
Spike comes to LA seeking the Gem of Amara.

Plot Highlights:

Spike narrates as Angel saves a girl from her boyfriend. Cordelia invoices. Oz delivers the Gem. Doyle has a hangover. Spike attacks, his hired vamp Marcus ambushes Angel. Marcus tortures Angel. Spike demands the ring from Cordy & Doyle in exchange for Angel. With Oz's van, they free Angel, but Marcus gets the ring. Spike fumes. Angel goes after Marcus, gets the ring. Angel smashes the ring.

Memorable Moments:

  • Spike mocking Angel for his super-hero schtick (and questionable masculinity) from the shadows. Esp. precious if you've seen later BtVS eps...
  • Doyle bemoaning his post-bender to an unsympathetic Cordelia; Cordy's description of his previous evening's behavoir
  • Marcus torturing Angel to classical music; Spike's ribbing of Angel RE: Buffy (again, even funnier now then it was then!)
  • Oz's fascination with how pale Angel is.
  • Doyle and Angel's rooftop chat as Angel watches his last Gem-of-Amara-based sunset before smashing it. The ending banter.

NOTES ON EPISODE ART: CREATED 07/2003 ~Okay, one more s1er before I go play with something else. Didn't take me long to decide on the images I wanted to use and the coloring, but the arrangement was an entirely different matter. There were 2 completely different layouts (and quite a few variations on each) before finally I decided this was the best I could do. I'm still a little unhappy with the floating head prominance, but I could find any midrange shots with such perfectly appropriate expressions, so that's how it goes.... Caps for this one come from Buffyverse.info and buffycaps.be, with some very light use of a few custom brushes from insomniac brushes. I used some stock pics of warehouse lighting fixtures and structural ceiling beams to fill in a little texture here and there.
