Xander gets split in two by a demon named Toth.Plot Highlights:
The gang watches tv in Xander's basement. Xander goes apartment shopping. Giles fights Toth off with a fertility goddess. The gang finds Spike & Toth at the dump (where Spike acquires his Buffy-manaquin). SuaveXander gets promoted. ScruffyXander enlists Willow's help. SuaveXander calms Anya down. The Xanders confront each other. The Xanders are reintegrated.
Quick Review:
The Replacement proves that there's plenty of life left in the good old "Evil Twins Episode" concept, especially if you're willing to wink at the cliché (Willow's pouting "I handled it just fine"; the Trek reference -- thankfully omitting the fluffy alien dogs). In addition to a good sampling of humorous bits, we also got a satisfying indication that Xander does have a shot at being more than just a clowning "butt-monkey" and a glimpse at the darker undertow that will soon be tugging at the Buffy/Riley relationship. All in all, a solid episode.
Memorable Moments:
- Giles trying to fight Toth off with various magic-shop nick-knacks and later getting defensive about it when the gang questions him.
- Dawn being oh-so-bratty-kid-sister, gagging at Buffy & Riley kissing & trying to enlist Joyce; her smug smile ending in an "ow!" when Buffy slams the door in her face.
- ScruffyXander trying to convince Willow he's the real Xander with the snoopy dance and the firetruck story.
- Riley's telling Buffy that there's no part of her he's not in love with as they BMW their way to Xander's rescue.
- Anya's suggesting they leave Xander split for the night & Giles' injunction that they all pretend they heard none of the disturbing sex talk.
