Quick Review:
Another robot? An evil twin wandering around Sunnydale? Haven't we been there, done that, this season already? I was skeptical and a little disappointed when the idea was introduced at the end of I Was Made to Love You. But I should have trusted Joss, as this episode turned out to be one of my favorites of the season. The way BuffyBot wandered chipperly through the episode exposing everyone else's attitudes towards the real Buffy was wonderfully entertaining as well as being deeply revealing. And of course, another great Spike episode full of vivid scenes (see Memorable Moments below) and great one-liners (does it get funnier than "impure as the driven yellow snow"?). Definitely a top-tenner for the season, and a must-see for the Spirit Guide bits that set up the big show in the season finale.
Memorable Moments:
- Buffy's reaction to Giles' vision quest supplies (gourd & a bunch of twigs) & his Hokey-Pokey ritual.
- Spike's insistance that BuffyBot not remind him that she isn't the real thing.
- Willow, Tara, Xander & Anya's individual reactions to the mistaken idea that Buffy is sleeping with Spike. Willow's & Xander's attempts at rationalization.
- Buffy's reactions to meeting BuffyBot, to her friends not realizing BuffyBot was a robot, & to Spike's obvious motivation for having her built.
- Spike's refusing to reveal the Key's identity despite Glory's torture tatics and delivering a top notch symphony of insults to get her to kick him out the door; his attitude disintegrating when he sees the cavalry arriving.
- A very beat up Spike's declaring himself to the faux-BuffyBot, only to find himself being gently kissed, strongly chastised & ultimately forgiven by the real Buffy.
