Quick Review:

This episode had its fair share of truly comic moments (see below) and a realistic daub of angsty confrontation to balance things out. And yet somehow though the parts were good, the whole was somehow a little lacking. It was the episode that had to happen to deal with fall-out from the previous season finale and the previous episode, and it was well crafted, but still, it leaves you anxious for the season to REALLY get started. Giles' & Oz's contributions to the humor are highlights.

Memorable Moments:

  • Giles sneaking off to the kitchen for a moment of unobserved emotion.
  • Synder and his "nearly physical sensation of pleasure" at keeping Buffy out of school; Joyce's reaction to him: "nasty little horrid, bigoted rodent-man"
  • Oz at the Hellmouth petting zoo, naming the zombie cat "Patches"; Giles huffily telling the Scoobies he's not taking it home for a warm saucer of milk. Buffy's "I wanted pine fresh, but mom wanted dead cat".
  • Cordelia "the dip girl" and Oz's discourse on gathering vs shindig vs hootenany.
  • Gile's mocking of Joyce and her American knack for taking exotic cursed objects home as a nick-knacks.
  • Giles bringing out a bit of Ripper for a smiling/threatening chat with Snyder on the subject of Buffy's readmission.
  • Willow enjoying the euphoric benefits of moral superiority; Buffy & Willow's good-natured exchange of character aspersions ("Tramp!" "Bad Seed!")

NOTES ON EPISODE ART: CREATED 10/2001 ~When Buffy and Joyce discuss how to handle Dawn in "Blood Ties" and Buffy says "I wouldn't want my mother and my sister coming at me from all sides" I was reminded of this Season 3 episode, where she dealt with that sort of thing first hand. And so for this collage, I thought I'd put Buffy in the middle and have the whole gang surrounding her, all focused on her, and not in a happy way.

(March 2003) What with all the other season 3 collages looking shiny and new, I just couldn't leave the hideous old version of this collage, so I redid it, in keeping with the original idea, but better.
