He had always been vigilant; keeping them all at arms length, never allowing any to break his carefully constructed walls and enter his heart. He’d laughed at the weak, the foolish ones who made themselves vulnerable to wounds that didn’t heal. 

Now he stood teetering dangerously on the precipice and his head spun. His mind screamed at him to run, to flee before it was too late. His heart screamed at him to surrender.

 “Ethan?” 

The deep, warm voice called to him, and turning he lost himself in the depths of his lover’s eyes and knew his heart had won.
