Synopsis

Money The Short: From the
WB11 home page: Our sulking hero discovers that the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart have sunk to new lows. Yes, it turns out that the underhanded legal eagles are stealing large contributions that were intended to go to a Los Angeles teen shelter. So, rather than just kill, mutilate and destroy, Angel decides to go with the law, call their bluff and expose the law firm's criminal activities. Unfortunately, an old nemesis has other plans for our guy. Seems he and Angel go way back and they have a score to settle. As Angel tries to convince the teen shelter's manager that Wolfram & Hart is all kinds of evil, Wesley, Gunn and Cordelia decide to set up shop of their own, they have a little demon-hunting experience after all. At the charity ball set up to net the firm, er shelter, large sums of money from wealthy contributors, Angel tricks Lindsay and Lilah into revealing their plans and then walks off with the money... aided by his old nemesis. The teen shelter's manager, who's had her own experience with vampires (could she be the runaway that Buffy met during the premiere episode of season 3?), wonders where the money went. Angel battles is out for honor with his nemesis and shows up at the shelter with the blood money.

The Long: After a ''Previously on Angel'' segment (see Continuity #1) we open on a serious confrontation between Wesley and Gunn as they play a board game at Cordelia's house (see Reference #1). Cordelia comes out of the shower and tells them to leave, they argue about if they are waiting for Angel to call or if they are working separately now. Wesley wants to scrap the calling cards (see Continuity #2). As Wesley and Gunn brainstorm about plans for a new agency Cordelia has a vision of a two headed fire breathing giant in the sewers (see Reference #2). Wesley and Gunn run off. Elsewhere on a sidewalk Angel accidentally runs into a blonde woman knocking her package to the ground and helps her. She's carrying clothes to the teen center and they chat a bit. Angel gets home and pulls out her wallet, which he stole. Her name is Anne Steele according to her drivers license and Angel has pictures of her with Lindsey, he's obviously been watching her (see Continuity #3).

Unfinished.

Creature Feature

Boone Cordelia has a vision of a giant two headed fire shooting monster of unknown origin. It's never seen on camera, but is killed by Wesley and Gunn.

Boone is an unclassified type of demon with blue skin, enormous strength and resistance to harm. Boone can emit steel coils around his hands, which he uses to increase the damage of his punches. Evidently he does not die from old age either.

Angel confirms in this episode that demon lairs require no invitation for a vampire to enter.

Cool Quotes

  1. Lilah: ''So, what if this guy is actually as good as he says and actually kills Angel?''
Lindsey: ''Boo-hoo! Let me wipe away the tears with my plastic hand!''
Now I remember why I like Lindsey.

  3. Merl: ''Well, nearly drowning me and leaving me hanging in the sewer ain't exactly Emily Post either.''
Emily Post authored a number of books on etiquette.

  4. Merl: ''Ow. Surveillance, you know? Dig up dirt. Check people out for him. Not that he appreciates it. Who the hell are you anyway? I.R.S.?''
The I.R.S. is the Internal Revenue Service, who are the agency under the Department of The Treasury in charge of collecting income taxes in the United States. The Internal Revenue Service has a web site at http://www.irs.gov/. Also referenced by Cordelia in City Of and The Ring.

  5. Boone: ''Haven't seen Angel since Juarez in the twenties. We had a little disagreement over a senorita. I called him out. We fought for three and a half hours.''
Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, lies across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. Much of fighting of the Mexican Revolution took place there in 1911. Prohibition in the U.S. brought a boom to Juarez in the '20s. It currently benefits from the twin-plant program with American companies. (Thanks to Melissa Evans for this information.)

    Napoleon
  6. Lilah: ''Hey, Napoleon, we are co-vice-presidents. This plan of yours explodes and we both end up in tiny pieces.''
Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821, was a Corsican who rose to become Emperor of France. He is both an historical figure and a legend. A great military commander and superb civil administrator, he was also accused of being a power-hungry conqueror.

  7. Liza: ''Serena, I have to know, this thing with making your character gay, is that like all about ratings? Because I don't get it.''
This could be a sly reference to the small controversy over Willow's relationship with Tara on Buffy The Vampire Slayer after years of dating men.

  8. Cordelia: ''mmm milk. mmm milk. mmm milk. milk.''
Cordelia is reenacting from the series of ad campaigns for milk, which had celebrities saying ''mmm milk'' or wearing a milk moustache. Among the celebrities who have done this are Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz.

  9. Wesley: ''Price. Wesley Wyndham-Pryce.''
James Bond (a.k.a. Agent 007) is the main character in a string of secret agent movies, who often introduced himself the way Wesley did. The character, who has been played by such actors as Sean Connery and most recently Pierce Brosnan, is notoriously suave, sophisticated, and popular with the ladies. Also referenced by Cordelia in The Prom, who was referring to Wesley at the time, Xander in Fear, Itself and Buffy in Out Of My Mind. (Thanks to the BuffyGuide for this entry.)

  2. Wesley: ''He's not going to call, is he? Right. I tell you the first thing we're scrapping. These stupid calling cards.''

Lonely Hearts - Cordelia had calling cards of her own design made for Angel Investigations.

    Lily

  6. Lilah: ''Aren't you forgetting something? The senior partners want Angel alive.''
Redefinition - Lindsey and Lilah were informed that Angel was not to be killed.

  7. The events of the later episode Birthday would imply that Cordelia turned 20 just before this episode took place.

    Chantarelle
  8. Anne: ''A few years ago it would have been a big turn on. I thought vampires were the coolest.''

Trivia

David
  • During the first broadcast of this episode there was a commercial for the film Valentine starring David Boreanaz, who plays Angel.

  • Anne works for the East Hills Teen Center on Crenshaw street.

  • There is a inconsistency in the closed captioning when Merl talks to Boone. Although he says ''Dig up dirt.'' the captions say ''Pick up dirt.'' There is another problem near the end where Lindsey runs to catch Anne before she plays the tape. Lindsey's lips move and the captions say ''No. Something happened.'' but you hear nothing.

  • If Boone's story is to be believed, he fought Angel in Juarez in the 1920's.

  • Anne's Drivers license appears to say ''ANNE STEELE, 5692 WILLOUSKY AVE, LOS ANGELES, CA, 90001, SEX: F HAIR: BNL, HT: 5-09, WT: 119, RSTR: NONE''

  • The video played at the charity event states Holland Manners was born in 1951 and died in 2000.

  • New name for Wesley: English (by Gunn).

  • The Morgue

    1. Two-headed demon: Slain by Wesley and Gunn in the sewers (off camera).
    2. Boone: Supposedly beaten to death by Angel in the lobby of the Hyperion Hotel (off camera).

    Points Of View

    Mathew:

I enjoyed seeing Anne again. She was a character with potential. It's also nice to see she's grown from the little lost girl she was on Buffy. Boone was an interesting demon, with a very different sort of power. It was good to see how they worked in Holland appearing after his demise. The inside jokes were welcome. I honestly didn't see it coming that Boone was working with Angel, they got me. I hope we'll be seeing more of Anne.
