Sanctuary
Story Line
A wet and slightly beaten up Faith and Angel ride down the elevator from Angel's office to his apartment. Angel tells Faith to 'come on.' He guides her to his bed where Faith sits down. She's withdrawn and won't speak. She wraps her arms around herself. Angel tells her that things are 'okay' and that she can 'rest here'. He gets her a towel and wraps it around her shoulders. Faith, still silent, lies down on the bed. Angel covers her with a blanket and once more, tells her to rest. He picks up her duffle bag and puts it on the chair next to
the bed, telling that he'll be close. He starts to leave when Faith gently calls to him. He turns, and just as in Who Are You, Faith has a vision of what she wants to do. She attacks him with a butcher knife. It's a quick flash. Back to reality, Faith merely tells him "Nothing". Angel then leaves her alone.
Post credits sees Cordy going through some office files when Wesley walks in. He gently inspects Cordy's black eye (courtesy of Faith). Wesley says: "Bitch." Obviously stunned at this, Cordy gives him a look. He says: "Not you, obviously. I can't tell you how sorry I am that I allowed this to happen."
Cordy comes back with: "I believe it was Faith who allowed her elbow to collide with my face. Not your fault." She sighs. Wesley states: "At least you only got the elbow."
Cordy, always one for light relief, says: "Well, if it's any consolation it really does look like you were tortured by a much larger woman." Wesley gives a small smile then asks if Faith is still here. Cordy animated, says: "He gave her his bed!" At that moment, Angel walks in and curtly greets Wesley. Both aren't entirely happy. Angel says he didn't expect Wesley to be in today, then asks how he's feeling. Wesley says he feels as well as can be expected. Angel merely says: "Good." He's preoccupied. He looks to Cordy "Good... Donuts?" Cordy points and Angel opens the box.
Wesley, sensing the obvious asks kinda of narky "Developed a sweet fang, have you?" Ignoring Wesley, Angel asks Cordy: "You got jelly?" Keeping well and truly out of what's to come, Cordy has her eye on what she's doing and just says: "Whole selection." Wesley, getting more annoyed by the second, asks: "Won't she find it difficult enjoying delicious, jelly-filled donuts, if she is... one assumes...bound and gagged?"
The reason for the guys' discomfort with one another now comes out.
Angel says: "Wesley, we went through all this last night." Wesley counters with: "Yes, you were right. The police would be ill equipped to hold a Slayer against her will. I understand why you chose not to turn her over to them. I do not, however, understand why the woman who brutally tortured me last night...this morning... gets pastries!" Angel simply says: "I don't really have anything else downstairs. What do you want to do, Wesley? Let her starve?"
Wesley replies: "Certainly not. There are far more humane ways to deal with a rabid animal." Angel, like the rest of us, retorts: "She is not an animal."
Wesley comes back with: "No?" Angel continues: "She's a person. In case you've forgotten...we're not in the business of giving up on people." Wesley, somewhat stupidly says: "Don't you dare take the moral high ground with me after what she did. I believe in helping people. I do not believe in coddling murderers!"
Angel replies rightly with: "It wasn't too long ago that you were the one making the case for her rehabilitation." Wesley lamely replies: "It wasn't too long ago I had full feeling in my right arm!" Angel finally spells it out for Wesley: "She wants to change." But Wesley's having none of it, citing that: "There is evil in that girl, Angel. It doesn't matter what she wants, or says she wants, you set her free, she'll kill again." Angel doesn't reply. Wesley leaves.
Angel notes to Cordy (who's just walked up to him getting him to sign cheques) that Wesley will 'come around'. Cordy, more interested that Angel is signing, concurs sarcastically, saying that people always 'get a little funny after being tortured'. Nicely keeping the BtVS continuity, she notes "Well, you'd know."
Angel asks Cordy if she understands that they have to help Faith. Still more interested in getting Angel to sign in the right places, Cordy once more speaks from the teeth out, saying she does. Angel, however, is rightly focused. "We can't just arbitrarily decide whose soul is worth saving and whose isn't." Cordy again, totally So-Cal, says: "Oh, I know!" She gets him to sign once more then rips out the page of cheques. Angel finally notes that they're all made out to her. Cordelia simply says 'Yeah'. Cordelia is leaving on paid vacation because she doesn't want to be around Faith who, she notes, is 'downstairs with 3 tonnes of medieval weaponry'. Laughter comes with her parting shot as she dons her jean jacket and sunglasses. Referring to the donuts she says: "Oh! And I'm thinking sugar high? Maybe not a great idea." She then leaves.
In the interim, Kate and company (LAPD) are investigating Victim Number One's (aka sleazeball at Bus stop) apartment and Faith in general.
Back at Angel's, he comes downstairs with the donuts. He notes the bed is empty and looks around. He finally sees Faith standing against the wall leading into the kitchen. She's holding a butcher knife. Putting down the donuts, he slowly walks up to Faith saying: "I understand what you're going through..and I want to help...but there are a few things you have to do. First, I need you to give me that knife." Faith doesn't really realize she has it. She appears to be in a fugue state. She does, however, give Angel the knife, hilt first. Angel gently takes it and tells her she should be resting. Faith simply replies "I've been asleep for eight months. You rest."
Comedy comes in the form of the 3 L's. Lilah walks into Lindsey's office and pours herself a drink, telling him that they've found her...with Angel. Lindsey asks if Angel's dead, Lilah says: "Well, he is a vampire...so technically, yes, he is dead. But not by her hand. She is his house guest." Lindsey can't believe it. Lilah continues: "That's right. The reason our little assassin hasn't made good on her contract is she's rooming with the mark." Lindsey, still a little flabbergasted, says: "We hired her to kill him." Lilah gives us all a giggle with "I believe I covered that with the assassin part." Lilah goes on a 'I told you so' kick...noting Angel can't be bought and apparently he can't be killed, "..even by a Vampire Slayer. Rumor has it he used to actually date one."
Lindsey asks who else knows. Lilah replies "No one outside of this room." Concerned, as always, about what the Senior partners will think, he notes "We conspired with her, paid her half up front, and now she makes us look like fools. So... question is...how are we gonna fix it?" We finally see Lee. He wants Faith dead due to Faith's 'How do you look now' pummeling. He's wearing a neck brace and his face is almost 100% swollen black and blue.
Back at Angel's, Faith is sitting on the bed, finally having showered and changed (unseen). She's thinking back to her accidental killing of Alan Finch (see Bad Girls). You can see she's trying to shake it off. The next thing, she's packing up her duffle bag when Angel enters the room. She throws a look his way after he calls her name, then continues doing up her bag. Angel says: "You're in no condition to leave here. You walk out that door now and you'll be running for the rest of your life, and my bet is, it'll be a pretty short run." Faith walks past him, bag in hand and says: "You know what? It doesn't matter."
Angel stands between her and the door and says: "It does matter. It matters to me." Confused that
someone is actually caring about her, Faith asks: "Why are you doing this? Why are you being nice to me? Just... stop it." Angel doesn't move or say anything. Faith, noting Angel's resolve says: "You gonna step aside or do we throw down? I mean, am I your prisoner here?"
Angel tells her that she's not his prisoner. Faith says: "So I'm free." Angel counters with "I don't know about that." He slides the door behind him open. "But the door is open." Faith walks past him. Angel calls after her. "Where are you gonna go? Back out in that darkness?" Faith stops, again, confused. She then keeps walking. Angel plays psychologist again: "I once told you that you didn't have to go out in that darkness." Again, Faith stops and listens, although she doesn't turn to face him. Angel continues, tentatively walking up behind her: "Remember? That it was your choice. Well, you chose. You thought that you could just touch it. That you'd be okay. 5x5, right, Faith? But it swallowed you whole." He's right behind her now. "So tell me...How did you like it?"
Faith turns and punches him hard. He doesn't retaliate, just slowly turns back to look at her. Faith stares for a moment then looks anywhere but at him. Faith hesitantly asks: "Help me?"
Angel replies with a simple: "Yeah."
Meanwhile, Wesley, still pouting, is in a pub, drinking a beer and playing darts by himself. As he goes up to get his darts a dart flies close by his head to hit the bull's eye. Wesley turns and sees Weatherby (CoW Wet Works team) sitting in his chair miming throwing the next dart at him. Collins and Smith (the other two members sent after Faith) come to stand next to his chair and Weatherby picks up Wesley's beer to mime a toast to Wesley. Soon Wesley and the Council goons are sitting in a booth and a waitress brings them more beer. Collins deliberately lights up a cigarette. Wesley looks at a no-smoking sign on the wall next to him. Collins looks at it as well then at Wesley. After a bit of small talk about how 'cheap' the CoW is, and how Faith (Buffy actually in WAY) 'cleaned their clocks', get down to business. They want Wesley to betray Angel and help them get Faith with the lure of him being reinstated to his 'rightful position as Watcher'. "She's betrayed our calling...Council... you. She has power and the willingness to use that power for evil. She must be stopped."
Faith is leaning on the microwave in Angel's kitchen. The box of donuts is sitting on top of it still closed. Angel comes in. Faith glances at him and asks: "So, how does this... work?" Angel gets deep, saying "There is no real simple answer to that. I won't lie to you and tell you that it'll be easy because it won't be. Just because you've decided to change doesn't mean that the world is ready for you to. The truth is, no matter how much you suffer, no matter how many good deeds you do to try to make up for the past, you may never balance out the cosmic scale. The only thing I can promise you is that you'll probably be haunted... and may be for the rest of your life."
Faith indicates the microwave: "So how does this work?" Slightly stunned, Angel walks over to program it: "Uh power level, time, start. Sure that popcorn is gonna be enough for you?" Indicating her cat-like self preservation (Grad Day 2) she says: "Yeah. I can live off the stuff. Tell Cordelia I'll pay her back." Angel replies with: "Actually I think it belonged to Wesley." Faith, naturally uncomfortable recalling her previous night's activities, says "Oh, maybe we just don't mention it then." Angel counters with "Maybe we do." Faith asks "Are you saying I gotta apologize?" Angel asks: "Think you can?"
Faith is still confused and slightly upset. "I don't' know. How do you say 'Gee, I'm really sorry I tortured you nearly to death?'" Angel chides: "Well, first off I think I'd leave off the 'Gee.' And secondly I think you have to ask yourself: are you?" Faith looks at Angel and genuinely asks "What?" Angel ends his question "..sorry."
Faith is tormented now. She asks: "And what if I can't say it? There are some things you can't just take back, no matter how sorry you are, right?" Angel concurs with: "Yeah, there are. I've got some experience in that area." Faith points out: "Right. And you've been doing this for a hundred years! I'm not gonna make it through the next ten minutes." Angel encourages her: "So make it through the next five, the next minute." Faith explains that she doesn't think she can. Angel assures her that she can. Faith walks away from him, agonized. "God, it hurts! I hate that it hurts like this!"
Angel follows her and once again, tries to wake her from her self pity with being short. "Oh well, it's supposed to hurt. All that pain, all that suffering you caused is coming back on you. Feel it! Deal with it! Then maybe you've got a shot at being free." Faith lets out something between a laugh and a cry: "I've got to be the first Slayer in history sponsored by a vampire." Angel says: "Yeah, well, I've got some experience in that area, too." The penny drops for Faith. "Oh God. B! How am I ever going to make things right with her?" Angel says: "Faith, this isn't about Buffy."
This is a moan of ours as Buffy never cared for Faith the way Faith explains here. Faith continues: "All my life there was only one person that tried to be my friend, went out of her way when I had no right or reason to expect her to and I screwed her. Not to mention her boyfriend, only, him...literally." Angel, a little confused, says: "Faith, you and I never actually..." Faith replies: "No, not you. The new one." Faith notes Angel's stunned reaction and apologizes: "Oh, my God! Angel, I'm so sorry I..."Angel cuts her off. "No, there. You can say it. That's good." He turns away from her and mumbles. 'Good'. This conversation clears up the 'Did Angel sleep with Faith' question in Enemies.
Back at Wolfram and Hart, Lilah, Lindsey and Lee have recruited another assassin (non human) to take care of both Angel and Faith. The assassin/creature has scraggily black hair, blue skin, a mouthful of fangs and four eyes. Back at the pub, the Wet Works team are still trying to convince Wesley to help them. Wesley looks at a folded napkin that Collins has slid across to him. He opens it to show a syringe laying on it. Wesley reaches to inspect it. Collins tells him to be careful, that the sedative contained inside is powerful enough to bring down a Slayer. Wesley is a little surprised that they intend to take Faith alive. He agrees to help them as long as they promise no harm comes to Angel.
Faith is eating popcorn while flicking through the channels on Angel's
TV. Some thing scampers by behind her unnoticed. A wet and steaming Angel sticks his head out of the bathroom. He calls out to Faith "Is everything okay in there?"
Sarcastically and not taking her eyes from the T.V., Faith replies: "It was touch and go for the four minutes you left me alone, but somehow I got through it."
Angel goes into his bedroom to finish dressing while the 'assassin' skitters along the ceiling above Faith. She flicks through channels and stops when she sees her photo. It's a police report. "Los Angeles police in conjunction with Federal authorities are looking for this woman tonight, a felony suspect from the California town of Sunnydale." Naturally thrown, Faith reaches for her drink and spills it. Angel hears the glass fall as he is putting on his shirt. He calls to her. When there's no response, he proceeds to the living room. "Faith-What is it?" He comes up beside her and seeing Faith's picture on the TV, crouches down beside her chair. He reassures her: "Faith, it's ok, alright? We knew about this. Nothing's changed, alright? Nothing's..."He takes the remote and is about to switch of the TV when Kate appears on the same report. He listens: "Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of this subject should get in touch with law enforcement immediately. Do not approach her. She is violent and unpredictable. I'll take a few questions." Angel hits the power button on the remote. Faith is all but transfixed to the now-turned-off-TV. "Listen to me Faith. You're safe here. You hear me? You're safe."
The 'assassin' hanging on the ceiling picks that moment to drop down on top of them. It throws Angel off Faith, then tosses Faith onto the sofa, over turning it, when Angel comes right back at it. The 'assassin' tosses Angel towards Faith and he pushes her into the kitchen to get her out of harms way then takes a hold of an overhead beam and swings both feet into the things face. In the kitchen Faith grabs a hold of the big butcher knife and hurries back to the fight. Angel comes sliding past the opening to the kitchen. The thing is charging a slightly dazed Angel as Faith comes up behind it and stabs it with the butcher knife. A few blows later the thing lies dying in the floor.
Faith is staring at the bloody knife in her hand as Angel picks himself up. It's too much for her. She whispers "No" and drops the knife and stares at her hands, gasping and shaking her head. Angel comforts her, leading her to the bed. "Shh. Hey. Sit down. Shh. It's- it's okay." Faith wraps her arms around Angel's neck, careful not to touch him with her bloody hands. He cuddles her and says: "Hey. It's gonna be okay. Okay? Shh. Alright." Angel looks over as he hears someone come down the stairs. It's Buffy.
Angel gets up, buttoning his shirt and slightly surprised: "Buffy. I didn't know you..." Buffy's not pleased. "What..." She looks from him to Faith still sitting on the day bed staring at her bloody hands, then back to Angel. She misconstrues the situation. "How... What are you doing?"
Angel replies honestly "She - we were attacked." Buffy is agast. "We? You and..."
Angel finishes for her: "Faith." Buffy replies by rote. "You and Faith." Angel can see where she's coming from now and says: "Oh, it's not what you think." Buffy, not knowing whether to pout or yell, says: "You actually think that I can form a thought right now?" She attempts to get on track. "Giles heard that...that she tried to kill you."
Angel is downbeat and calm. "That's true." Trying the sarcastic route, Buffy states: "So you decided to punish her with a severe cuddling." Angel picks up on why Buffy's come to him. "Is that why you're here? To punish her?" Buffy counters with: "I was worried about you."
Faith, not knowing what to do until this point, finally speaks up. "Buffy." Buffy cuts her off with a death glare. Faith merely says: "...Oh, God." Buffy walks closer to Faith who is cringing away from her-still on the bedsit. Buffy, in her most annoying and self-righteous way, states: "You didn't think I was going to find you, did you?"
Angel interrupts with: "Buffy, let's talk." Buffy, still on her high horse and totally invading Faith's 'comfort zone' snaps: "Oh, I don't think talk is in order right now." Angel counters with: "She needs help." Buffy whips around to face Angel. "Help?! Do you have any idea what she did to me?" Angel, simply says "Yes."
Astounded, Buffy asks: "Do you care?" Angel focuses on the fact this isn't about Buffy. He tries to explain: "She wants to change. She has a chance to..." Buffy cuts him off, saying: "No. No chance. Jail." Faith slowly gets up. Angel asks Buffy "You think that'll help?"
Faith, attempts an apology. "Buffy...I'm sor..." Buffy whips around to face her.Trying to contain her anger, Buffy states in a measured tone: "Apologize to me and I will beat you to death." Faith quietly says: "Go ahead." Angel steps between Faith and Buffy, protecting Faith. He states to Buffy "This is not gonna happen." Buffy, defiant, asks: "You're gonna stop me? Because you're gonna have to." Faith shakes her head: "Don't... do this." Angel is angry now. Much like a father, he says: "Faith, go upstairs - now." Buffy, much like a furious mother, yells: "You think I'm gonna let her out of my sight?" Angel says: "Buffy, just back off." Faith is still standing, much like the lost little girl she is. Buffy, astounded, yells: "There is no way I'm letting her out of my sight!"
Angel, not taking his eyes of Buffy, demands: "Faith, go!" Faith goes up the stairs and Buffy moves to stop her, saying "Don't you move a..." However, Angel catches Buffy's arm and she turns to punch him full in the face. She hauls back to hit him again, but Angel blocks her fist and hits her across the face in return. Angel steps back as Buffy stares at him with a hand over her mouth...stunned. Angel apologizes. Faith opens the upstairs door and steps into Angel's office. She looks down at Buffy and Angel. Wesley comes in from the outer office as Faith stares down the stairs. "Faith? Going somewhere?" He asks. Faith turns to look at him then turns to stare back down the stairs: "No. Just wanted to be alone."
Wesley comes closer and asks (a little menacingly): "Angel downstairs?" Faith replies with a 'Yeah'. Wesley sighs: "Right.".
Back at Wolfram and Hart, Lindsay is pacing in an office with Lee sitting at the table. Lilah comes in. Lee asks: "Well?" Lilah replies: "Strike two." Lee is furious. He states: "This is getting ridiculous. The first assassin kills the second assassin - sent to kill the first assassin, - who didn't assassinate anyone until we hired - the second assassin to assassinate the first assassin!"
Lindsay states: "Alright. This obviously isn't working." To which Lilah sarcastically replies: "You think?" Lindsey tells them they've gone about the whole thing wrong. That they're lawyers and it's a mistake for then to try to work outside the law. Lilah thinks he's being ironic, but Lindsey states he's not and it's about time they moved the fight to their 'own turf'.
Back at Angel's, Buffy's still pouty and self righteous and Angel is still attempting to make her see reason. He states that Faith will not 'run'. Buffy replies with: "Well, why would she? When she has her brave knight to protect her? Got you. Does she cry? Pouty lips, heaving bosom? I thought you needed help." Angel asks: "You think I wanted this to happen?" Buffy, amazingly, returns to the whack Angel gave her. "You hit me." Angel replies: "Not to go all schoolyard on you, but you hit me first. In case you've forgotten - you're a little bit stronger than I am." Buffy pouts that: "You did it for her."
Angel points out that Buffy was "...about three seconds from making her run, you know that! She's at a crucial stage." Buffy counters with: "She's playing you. She tried to kill you!" Angel states that it was "...just a cry for help."
Buffy counters with: "A cry for help is when you say 'help' in a loud voice." Angel states that: "I know Faith did some bad things to you." Buffy counters that he couldn't possibly know. Angel replies that "And you can't possibly know what she's going through."
Arrogantly, and somewhat below the belt for Buffy, she says: "And of course, you do? I'm sorry. I can't be in your club. I never murdered anybody." At this stage, footsteps can be heard coming down the stairs. Angel thinks it's Faith. In fact, it's Faith and Wesley. Wesley tells Faith to get her coat and tells Angel there's been a 'slight change of plan'. Angel asks Wesley what's going on. He tells him that: "..the Council's operations team is coming in here. They'll expect to find you gone and her (Faith) drugged." Angel asks how many, Wesley replies three. He finally notices Buffy, greets her, and tells her she's come at a bad time. However, Buffy knows this.
Angel asks why Wesley brought 'the team' to his place. Wesley replies that he couldn't shake them and had to '...pretend I was helping them.' Buffy (obviously) says she knows these guys (WAY) and that they're killers. Wesley tells them that they've surrounded the building. Angel says he'll check the sewers, if they're clear, they'll leave that way. He turns and calls for Faith. No answer. They all turn to look for her, but she's gone. Wesley observes that she 'must've slipped out'. Angel replies that she'd head for the roof. He turns to head for there, but Wesley says that Buffy will protect Faith. Wisely, Angel states he's not sure that's Buffy's agenda.
Wesley states that the sewers 'are still our best route' He conitnues that he didn't do this for Faith. He did it because he trusts Angel. (One presumes-his judgement). At the police station, Kate has her arms crossed and is far from happy. She's talking to Lindsey, asking why she should believe a word he says. Ducking the verbal arrows that Kate aims his way, Lindsey merely states that while they do differ on a great many issues, they do have one common enemy. He lays a picture of Angel onto the table. He weaves her father's murder and her revenge into the scheme of things, then goes on to tell her that "The woman you're looking for? She's with him."
Buffy comes out on the roof to see Faith standing near the edge, looking over. A helicopter flies around in the background. Buffy says to Faith from behind her: "You're not gonna run, Faith." Faith gives a half laugh, saying: "What do you wanna do? You're gonna throw me off the roof...again?" Buffy, calmer than before, says: "Any reason why I shouldn't?"
Faith turns to look at Buffy, stating simply: "There is nothing I can do for you, B. I can't ever make it right." Buffy challenges: "So you're just going to take off again. Leave us to clean up yet another one of your messes." Faith replies that: "It would make things easier for you." Buffy anticipates: "Till you got bored with the whole guilt thing? Decide to come back to shake things up?" Faith states: "That's not gonna happen."
Buffy is getting angry again. She concurs with, then twists Faith's statement, making it a challenge. Faith says: "Angel said there
was no way you were gonna give me a chance." Buffy's furious at this. "I gave you every chance! I tried so hard to help you, and you spat on me. My life was just something for you to play with. Angel, Riley, anything that you could take from me, you took. I've lost battles before... but nobody else has ever made me a victim." Faith finally has something she can speak to. "And you can't stand that. You're all about control. You have no idea what it's like on the other side! Where nothing's in control, nothing makes sense! There is just pain and hate and nothing you do means anything. You can't even.." Buffy cuts her off with "Shut up!"(Basically because everything Faith was saying is true.) Faith, simply and honestly asks: "Just tell me how to make it better."
Annoyingly, at this point, the door to the roof bursts open and Collins steps through, machine gun in hand. Buffy tackles Faith to safety as Collins opens fire. Angel and Wesley, standing next to the sewer entrance in his apartment, hear the shots. Angel notes it's coming from the roof. Just then Weatherby comes in shooting at them with his machine gun. Angel and Wesley take cover.
Wesley yells that he didn't give Weatherby the signal. Weatherby tells him to 'Shut it'. He smiles at Angel as he lifts a loaded crossbow saying: "Vampire."
Despite Buffy's appalling attitude, she teams up with Faith. She tells her: "I think we can make it to the other building." They run but before they reach the edge a black helicopter comes to hover in front of them. Smith is in the open door, machine gun in hand.
Buffy and Faith run to hide behind a skylight. Collins has to reload and Buffy and Faith change skylights.
Back inside Wesley is trying to get Weatherby, listen to reason. Weatherby piffles the idea, disgusted, he says: "Reason? A Watcher working for a vampire. It's perversion."
Back on the roof, Buffy tells Faith that she has to take out the 'guy with the gun'. She tells Faith to 'stay here'. Faith agrees to. Buffy lunges over the skylight and tackles Collins. They fight with Smith unable to shoot without hitting Collins.
Inside: Weatherby is on a rant. He asks Wesley "...Do the sacred oaths you swore as a Watcher mean nothing to you now?" Wesley replies: "As a matter of fact they do. I swore to protect the innocent." He tells Angel to "... Get to the roof. Help them." Angel runs for the stairs while Weatherby drops the crossbow and shoots at Wesley as he runs for the cover of another pillar.
Buffy is fighting Collins. - Wesley takes the cap from the syringe and throws it like a dart. It hits Weatherby in the side of the neck and he drops his gun. Wesley smiles and says to himself '180'. Weatherby pulls the needle out. While he stands there swaying Wesley walks up to him and knocks him out with a right cross. - Angel is running up the stairs to the roof - Buffy and Collins are still fighting. - Angel sees the helicopters spotlight through the milky Skylight above the top landing - Buffy knocks Collins down and turns to face the helicopter just as Angel comes shooting through the skylight, catching it's left rung with his arms. He reaches up and pulls Smith out of the door. Smith lands at Buffy's feet, while Angel climbs up to stand on the rung. Angel, in vamp face to the pilot to 'Take it down'. Buffy watches the helicopter leave then turns around. Buffy turns and calls for Faith. But Faith is nowhere to be seen. A bunch of police cars drive up with lights and sirens as the helicopter sets down. Kate storms up to Angel and demands to know where Faith is. He says nothing. Kate tells him he as one shot. Still, Angel refuses to say anything. Kate tells an officer to arrest him, starting with aiding and abetting a wanted felon. The cops cuff Angel and lead him away.
Wesley and Buffy arrive at the police station in Angel's car. They quickly catch up to Kate and Angel as Kate says "I think you're gonna like the cell we have for you, Angel. It faces east. It'll give you a great view of the sunrise in about four hours." Buffy's horrified. Angel tells her it's okay. Buffy asks Kate if she knows what he is. Kate merely asks who she is. Angel tells Kate she's 'nobody'. Buffy steps between Angel and Kate as the reach they reach her desk. "Wait. This is murder." Buffy states. Angel tells Buffy it's okay again. Buffy protests that it's not alright. Bored and annoyed, Kate tells an officer to get Buffy away. Buffy pushes the cop off her. She yells: "You are not taking the fall for her, Angel." Kate insists that Buffy gets out. But Angel looks over and sees Faith sitting at another desk with her back to them. He says: "Buffy." and indicates in Faith's direction. Everyone in their group turns to look. A cop tries to pull Angel away and Buffy pushes his arm away. Faith looks over her shoulder at them and slowly stands up as Kate walks over to her. She says simply to Kate: "I'd like to make a confession."
Buffy and Angel are standing alone in the hallway of the police station. Buffy says: "You should have told me what was going on." Angel replies: "I didn't - I didn't think it was your business." Amazed, Buffy says: "Not my business?" Again, Angel replies truthfully. "I needed more time with Faith. I'm not sure.." Confused and hurt, Buffy says: "You needed... Do you have any idea what it was like for me to see you with her? That you went behind my back..." Again, Angel cuts her off. "Buffy, this wasn't about you! This was about saving somebody's soul. That's what I do here, and you're not a part of it! That was your idea, remember? We stay away from each other." Buffy says: "I came here because you were in danger." Seeing RIGHT through her, Angel calls her on it. "I'm in danger every day. You came because of Faith. You were looking for vengeance." Buffy astoundingly replies: "I have a right to it." Angel counters:"Not in my city." Buffy turns away for a moment then turns back. "I have someone in my life now. That I love." Angel swallows hard. Buffy continues: "It's not what you and I had. It's very new. (She steps closer) You know what makes it new? - I trust him. I know him." Angel lets out a breath and says angrily: "That's great. It's nice you moved on. I can't. You found someone new. I'm not allowed to, remember? I see you again it cuts me up inside and the person I share that with is me! You don't know me anymore. So don't come down here with your great new life and expect me to do things your way! Go home!"
Buffy looks at him for a moment then goes to pick up her jacket, while Angel walks over to the wall and braces his hands against it. Amazingly, Buffy's too into her own deal to even get Angel's point. She merely says: "See? Faith wins again." Angel tells her to go without even looking at her. Buffy goes. After a moment Angel slams his hands against the wall and sighs. Wesley comes over to him and asks if he's all right. Angel replies "For a taciturn, shadowy guy - I've got a big mouth." Wesley asks "Did you want to go after her?"
Angel replies that he did. Wesley, speaking gently, says "I don't know how much my opinion counts for, but - I think you did the right thing." Angel, still with Buffy on his mind, asks: "Yelling at Buffy?" Wesley replies "No. The other thing."
Angel shakes his head: "I didn't do it. Faith did."
We see Faith sitting alone in a jail cell, leaning back against the wall almost content. We hear Wesley say: "I hope she is strong enough to make it. - Peace is not an easy thing to find." Angel replies: "She has a chance." A close-up of Faith's face. Faith closes her eyes. Fade to black.
