Graduation Day 2 Episode Guide

Story Line

An emotionally confused Buffy watches the truck carry Faith off into the night. She's not in the least bit happy. She walks slowly to the fire escape, taking one more look around at the now empty rooftop. At that moment, the Mayor arrives and walks over to the broken window. A vamp interrupts his thoughts, announcing that there's nobody in the apartment. "No, she'd take the fight outside." The Mayor replies. He then walks purposefully down to the main area. Continuing, he says: "My Faith doesn't like to be cooped up. We have to find her. Put everyone on it. Do it now." The vamp asks about the Ascension, but the Mayor doesn't care. He only cares about Faith. Clearly distraught, he yells at the lackey and repeats: "Find them!" He then goes on to reassure himself that Faith will be OK. "Faith's a good girl. She can take anything they'll throw at her. She's gonna be alright. She's going to be alright. She'll be alright."

Post credits has Xander bringing Giles coffee. Both are worried about Buffy as she hasn't returned. Focusing on work, both look up books that may have the key to defeating the demon the Mayor will become. At that moment, Cordy enters, saying she's received a phone call from Wesley. She wants to know what's going on. Giles obliges and tells her that Buffy has quit the Council and no longer needs a Watcher. Deflated, Cordelia agrees to help Xander and Giles. (Perhaps one of the few insights into 4th season Buffy, comes from Cordelia). Angry on Wesley's behalf, she mumbles that it's: "Such a Buffy thing to do. She's always thinking of herself." Neither Giles nor Xander respond though.

Cut to Angel's mansion and we see Willow wiping Angel's brow. He's delirious and mistakes her for Buffy, telling her that he was wrong to think he could leave her and that he ". . .needs her." Willow nervously corrects him, saying he needs Buffy. Angel then realizes it's Willow he's talking to. He asks after Buffy. Willow says she'll be back soon. She leaves Angel and goes to Oz. She tells Oz she feels guilty to feel so great on such a terrible night. As she and Oz kiss, Buffy enters. Both Oz and Willow ask about Faith, but Buffy doesn't need to reply. Her faces says it all. She asks to be alone with Angel. Willow tells her that they'll look for another cure, but Buffy knows there's no time. She goes to Angel, who is glad that he gets to say goodbye. Buffy tells him he's not going to die. That there's a cure. She removes her coat and tells him to: "Drink". Angel is confused. Buffy spells it out for him: "Drink me. It's the only way." Naturally, he refuses. He gets up out of bed. Buffy tells him the blood of a Slayer is the only cure. He asks about Faith. Buffy informs him she tried. Angel tells her "It's over then." He blunders out into the main room. Buffy won't give up. She hits him and forces him to drink from her. The tables are soon turned when a cured Angel rushes into hospital with Buffy in his arms, telling the Doctor that she's lost a lot of blood.

When next we see Faith, it's in hospital. A doctor tells Mayor Wilkens that the damage to her kidney's is repairable, but the head trauma is too severe. The doctor says he's amazed she's alive at all, due to the massive blood loss. He goes on to say: "I'm sorry sir. There's almost no chance that she'll ever regain consciousness. " The Mayor is clearly in deep disbelief. Faith is in a coma and is unlikely to ever come out of it. He walks to her bedside and tenderly moves aside the same strand of hair that he had in her apartment. He strokes her face, telling the unconscious Slayer: "It's your day." He then overhears a nurse telling the doctor that they have another girl in with severe blood loss. Instinctively, he knows that it has to be Buffy. He goes to make sure. Upon seeing that it is, he tries to smother her. However, Angel arrives in the nick of time. He pulls the Mayor of Buffy, saying: "Don't do that!" The two clearly despising each other, the Mayor replies: "I'll do that and worse! Murderess little fiend. Did you see what she did to my Faith?" Angel quickly replies with: "I hadn't made plans to weep over that one." The Mayor is in full fury. He tells Angel: "Well I'd get set for some weeping if I were you. I'd get set for a world of pain! Misery loves company young man, and I'm looking to share." At that point Angel has had enough and pushes the Mayor so hard he flies back into the wall. Dusting himself off, he laughs, saying: "Looks like somebody's been eating his spinach." He looks around, suddenly aware that he's the Mayor and people are puzzled. With some of his usual charm back, he says: "It's okay folks, it's alright. The show's not over, but there will be a short intermission." He walks past Angel saying, "Don't want to miss the second act! All kinds of excitement."

The gang all arrive at the hospital, slightly confused that Angel's OK but that Buffy's not. Willow thinks Faith got to Buffy, but Angel tells her: "Faith's no longer in the picture. Buffy put her in a coma." Oz observes that Angel seems fine. Angel tells them that he fed off Buffy. The gang are far from impressed.

Once Angel leaves, the scene cuts to the Astral plane, set in Faith's apartment. Things are packed up in boxes, as though, if this were 'this plane', Faith would be moving. Buffy is confused. She walks around, surveying the place. A cat meows and jumps onto Faith's bed. Buffy, sensing Faith, although not turning, asks: "Who's gonna look after him?" Faith comes in from behind Buffy telling her: "It's a she. And aren't these things supposed to take care of themselves?" She continues past Buffy. Buffy asks Faith: "A higher power guiding us?" Faith gives a small laugh and replies: "I'm pretty sure that's not what I meant." She, too, takes a small glance at her apartment, while continuing to walk to the window that she often looked out of, and that both she and Buffy crashed through. Sunlight bathes her face, as she stops at the window.

Buffy is puzzled. She tells Faith: "There's something I'm supposed to be doing." Still at the window, Faith agrees: "Oh yeah! Miles to go. Little Miss Muffett counting down from 7-3-0." Buffy gives a small smile and sighs: "Great. Riddles." Faith apologizes: "Sorry. It's my head. A lotta new stuff." She regards the window and says: "They're never gonna fix this, are they?" Buffy, after seeing the cat turn into Faith and how she appears in real life, is more concerned with Faith's health, saying: "What about you?" Faith turns to her and smiles. She reassures Buffy, indicating her facial area and saying: "Scar tissue. It fades, it all fades." Reality is getting closer now, as Buffy sees a flash of the knife she stabbed Faith with. She looks up from her hands and back to Faith. Faith simply says: "You wanna know the deal?—Human weakness. Never goes away. Even his." Buffy asks seriously: "Is this your mind or mine?" Faith laughs, clearly having no idea, she says: "Beats me." Buffy gives a small smile. Faith becomes serious again, telling Buffy: "Gettin' towards that time." She walks to Buffy. Looking around, Buffy asks: "How you gonna fit all this stuff?" Faith merely says: "Not gonna. It's yours." Buffy says: "I can't use all this." Faith replies: "Just take what you need." She gives her peer a small smile and asks: "You ready?" She then gently puts her thumb to Buffy's lips. A blinding light transfers Buffy from the Astral plane to her hospital bed. She instinctively knows where Faith is and walks to her. She pauses and looks remorsefully at a very bruised Faith, and then kisses her gently on the forehead. She takes one more look at the young Slayer, and is determined to stop the Mayor.

Having dressed, Buffy walks to her friends who are all waiting for her in the corridor. Buffy tells them to gather everyone. That she's ". . .ready." Willow asks the all important: "Ready for what?" Buffy replies simply. "War." In the library, Buffy wraps up her 'basic plan' and asks if anyone thinks she's crazy. Willow says crazy is such a 'strong word'. Giles tells her he wouldn't rule it out though. Cordy tells her she couldn't think of a crazier plan, at which point Oz says: "We attack the Mayor with humus." Cordelia stands corrected. Buffy tells Xander he's the key, as much of the plan rests on his knowledge of when he was 'soldier guy'. Giles tentatively tells Buffy that "This is all rather dependant on you being able to control the Mayor." To which she replies: "Faith told me to play on his human weakness." Willow asks: "Was that before or after you put her in a coma?" Buffy replies: "After." Giles asks the crucial question though. "Play on the Mayor's weakness. . .which is?" After to-ing and fro-ing about germs, Angel finally comes up with the answer. "Faith. At the hospital he was grieving. Seriously crazed and not in just a homicidal 'I wanna be a demon' way. She's his weak link." Buffy tells the gang that she can work that.

Wesley then enters saying that they don't have a lot of time. Buffy tells him that the Council is not welcome, she has no time for orders. But if she needs someone to 'scream like a woman' she'll give him a call. Wesley simply says: "Just tell me how I can help." What proceeds is wonderfully intercut scenes from both the library and the Mayor's office. Buffy 'laying it out' for their side, the Mayor 'laying it out' for his. An eclipse will take place, which is rather handy, not only for the vampire lackeys of the Mayor's but also for Angel. Angel tells Buffy that he won't say goodbye to her once 'this' is all over. He'll just go. Buffy, crushed, agrees without saying a word.

Buffy then unravels the knife. Given to Faith by the Mayor, Faith used it to save Wesley's life from one of the 'creatures' from the box of Gavarock. She had to leave it behind, and Buffy took it. Buffy then used it to knife Faith. Stained with Faith's blood, Buffy is certain it's the key to control the Mayor. At the actual ceremony, the Mayor begins his speech. He tells them what a special day it is. The 100th anniversary of the founding of Sunnydale. However, he's aware that it means nothing to the teens gathered before him. He speaks of the road everyone took to get ". .here today." And cites some of the emotions. He mentions grief and loss. He goes on to say that "Some people who are meant to be here today, aren't." (Obviously and blatantly meaning Faith). Buffy knows she can get him now. She's sure. Before he can finish his speech, he ascends and transforms into the demon. While some do flee, amazingly, most kids stay. They have weapons under their gowns. Medieval to flamethrowers. Xander has everyone organized. However, there are vampires blocking any escape. Xander orders the flank to use their bow and arrows. After the 'bowmen' fire, the vampires attempt a retreat, however, Angel and his cohorts are there to stop them. A huge fight ensues in which Harmony is bitten.

Buffy stands firm, getting the demon's attention. She shouts: "Hey!" The former Mayor looks down at the Slayer. Buffy continues: "You remember this?" She shows him the knife. "I took it from Faith. Stuck it in her gut. Just slid in her like she was butter. You wanna get it back from me...Dick?" Buffy then runs toward the library, the now snake-like demon in full pursuit. Not bothering with the hallways, he crashes through the school.

Having run into the library, Buffy then dives out a window, to where Giles is waiting with a detonator. They've loaded the library with every explosive they could find. The former Mayor's last words are: "Well gosh." The school goes up. After, Giles (having sorted through all the diplomas) gives Buffy hers, Angel disappears and Buffy and the Scooby gang all marvel at how they survived High School.
