Buffy Holds a Grudge at Comic Con
I've chased Sarah Michelle Gellar all around the world. Interviewed her in Japan, Australia, Canada, Los Angeles and now San Diego. Where next? I'm hoping Europe, actually. Humorously, I've never really asked her a single question about Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

Stars Attack SciFi Shindig
The Firefly faithful were out in force to welcome Joss Whedon and the cast of Serenity, the feature-film version of the canceled-but-not-forgotten Fox TV series. Fans were so happy to see the Buffy mastermind that they greeted him with a rousing standing ovation. Whedon returned the favor by premiering an action-packed teaser for the movie, due in theaters next April. The love in the room was so thick, you could only break through it with one of the Serenity crew members' wicked guns.

Finding Serenity in Pen & Ink
The once-failed FIREFLY empire continues to grow. The scifi/Western TV series canceled abruptly late in 2002 by Fox is now a film in production called SERENITY. And now creator Joss Whedon says he plans to create a line of comic books based on the film.

Comic-Con Sunday
Last but not least, Joss Whedon turned up with the cast of Serenity, the big-screen version of his short-lived TV series, Firefly. And judging from the reception in Room 20, it was like God himself had decided to show up (He hadn’t of course; He was in the Autograph Area, doing a signing). Still, to many geeks, Whedon – the creator of Buffy, Angel and Firefly, but also the guy who wrote the ‘Do you know what happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning?’ line in X-Men, so he’s not perfect – is God. And he’s brought something with him to show us. It took him more than seven days to make the montage of recently-shot footage from Serenity, but lo it was good.

A quickfire series of action shots (including plenty of gunplay) and clever Whedon-patented wiseass dialogue, the clip received a huge ovation. And then on came the cast of the series, each of whom has made the step up to the big screen. The diehard Firefly fans will also make the step up, when the movie comes out in Spring.

There were no major effects shots to speak of in the clip (although Chiwetel Ejiofor makes an appearance as a deadly assassin), but the prospects for Serenity look very bright indeed. Look out for more details and a transcription of this later this week.

Global Frequency
Busily broadcasting from bed, creator Warren Ellis kiboshed rumors of a casting crisis on his Bad Signal mailing list. The rumor was that actress Amber Benson was out of the running for a role on the show, based on her playing a lesbian on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." "Big surprise, that Amber Benson thing now appears to have been a bunch of crap, presumably released into the wild by someone with an axe or two to grind. Not that any of the people who felt like demanding information from me yesterday and this morning could be arsed to let me know. Also a big surprise. I harbour many foul suspicions about the whole thing."

More Notes from Jewel
We are officially "more than half way" to finishing "Serenity". It's unbelievable that time is flying by this fast. And it's even more unbelievable that I still don't know my way around the Universal lot. I know where the Starbucks is, though. And I know exactly how much time it takes to get from my house to the front door of my trailer in the morning. I've timed this so I can sleep in as much as possible, which is kind of sad and stupid, because another eight minutes of sleep really doesn't make any kind of difference at all.

WB Trying to Age Gracefully
The WB's shift in emphasis came too late for the latest reincarnation of Dark Shadows. The gothic soap opera was considered a sure thing for the fall schedule, so much so that it is widely seen as the reason the network's existing vampire series, Angel, was canceled. Ancier said this isn't so, that they were separate decisions. But he also said if Angel hadn't demanded an early pickup and waited until late spring -- coincidentally, when the network decided not to go ahead with Dark Shadows -- the call might have been different.

Watch with Kristin
Have you been reading that the new CEO of the WB says they might have made a mistake canceling Angel? Vindication! It tastes so sweet and so sour at the same time!
I asked him the exact same thing and have some promising news for you guys, but I have to get my hands on the tape (the interview was for E! News Live) and transcribe it for you. If I can't get it up tonight, I promise it will be in this week's column. For now (just so I don't torture you), I'll tell you that he sounded very pro-Angel, and verrry interested in doing Angel movies this season.
