Serenity News |
Universal Big on Serenity? This isn’t a big update on the Joss Whedon feature directorial debut Serenity, but it’s something that starts to put my mind at ease. This hasn’t been a stellar summer for Universal, and their two big films featuring space ships, Riddick and Thunderbirds, have been basically buried at the box office. I am concerned that the studio will not realize that these are bad movies, but will rather think that space films don’t fly, and thus will do bad things to Serenity when it’s released, like dump it in a few hundred theaters to die. |

Joss News |
Joss Whedon Waxes About Astonishing X-Men A few months into his hugely popular and critically acclaimed run on "Astonishing X-Men," Joss Whedon has copped to why he's shoving aside the glitz and glamour of Hollywood for the four-color world of comic books.
POLL RESULTS: Who you think should direct X-MEN 3 And the winner with 35% of the popular vote was Joss Whedon (SERENITY, creator of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER). Whedon's got the experience: not only did he perform an uncredited rewrite on the first X-MEN movie, he's also currently writing the monthly ASTONISHING X-MEN comic book series for Marvel Comics. While the fans may have spoken, the Joss-man may not have the time to come save the day for Professor X and his pals since he's knee-deep in filming SERENITY and then has to get it through post-production in time to make the film's April 22, 2005 opening date. Still, there's nothing preventing Fox from hanging on for a few months and maybe cough up enough greenbacks to interest Whedon, right? |

Second Verse, Same as the First Sometimes, the history of television reads like something out of the Old Testament. LOVE AMERICAN STYLE begot HAPPY DAYS begot LAVERNE & SHIRLEY and MORK & MINDY. THREE'S COMPANY begot THE ROPERS. DIFF'RENT STROKES begot FACTS OF LIFE. ALL IN THE FAMILY begot THE JEFFERSONS. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER begot ANGEL. CHEERS begot FRASIER. Sometimes, it's a case of audiences wanting more of the same, where rather than spinning off a popular character, such as FRIENDS attempt this fall to become a franchise with JOEY, a concept is carried over into a new locale with a new cast. (More mentions of Angel further down.)
FCC Denies Will and Grace, Buffy Shows Indecent U.S. communications regulators have denied complaints that TV stations violated indecency rules when they aired episodes of NBC's "Will and Grace" and UPN's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with fake lesbian and heterosexual sex, according to orders released on Monday. |

Seth Green News |
Seth Green: Animated Guy Seth Green is best known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer's werewolf Oz and Dr. Evil's son in the Austin Powers movies. But he's thrilled to be reprising his role as dimwitted teenager Chris Griffin on the short-lived (but much-loved) Family Guy. After abruptly canceling it a few years back, Fox has decided to resurrect the animated comedy series. New episodes start in 2005, but to catch you up, a mini-marathon of old episodes will air on Aug. 18 and 25 at 8 pm/ET. Green's glad the cartoon is getting a second life. |

Joss News |
X-Men 3 Fallout The Hollywood Reporter and Variety report that director Bryan Singer and 20th Century Fox have officially parted company. The X-Men director recently agreed to helm Superman for rival Warner Brothers, despite his production company Bad Hat Harry having a two-year deal with Fox. .... For what it's worth, a recent fan poll at Cinescape Online named Joss Whedon the favorite to replace Singer as director of the next Marvel mutant movie. X-Men 3 was slated for a May 3, 2006 release. |

Angel Merchandise News |
Angel CD Soundtrack News Another good omen for Angel music fans in regards to the upcoming CD of the series' musical scores, "Angel album looks like a go: nearing final stages of completion." - Rob. But along with the good news, Rob also had some slightly bad news to add to it, and that was that the CD will not be released in the USA, but will be everywhere else in the viable marketing world. |

Seth Green Movie News |
Without a Paddle Ah yes, this is the requisite "Why, Seth Green, why?" paragraph I re-write every few months. The talented actor who was soufully laconic on Buffy the Vampire Slayer has followed that show by making a slew of heinous films. Scooby-Doo 2 was the latest crime against nature, but I guess my beloved Oz didn't feel that he had quite struck bottom. Instead, he chose to do this movie about three morons who raft down a river in search of the lost fortune of D.B. Cooper. |

Listen up, Hollywood -- is there a female version of Spidey for our times? When undercover warrior Eowyn roared these words in the Peter Jackson's adaptation of "Return of the King" last year, just before trouncing the vilest of the bad guys, she got an appreciative roar from theater audiences. It was a great punch line -- literally. (Buffy mention) |

Sarah M. Gellar Movie News |
Behr: Grudge Translates Well Jason Behr, who plays the boyfriend of Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in the upcoming horror remake The Grudge, told SCI FI Wire that the new version remains true to the spirit of the original Japanese film, Ju-On. "The Grudge, I think, [is] the best of both worlds, because it doesn't lose any of that Japanese sensibility," he said in an interview. "It definitely has a different flavor, in that way that Ju-On was very unique. But The Grudge is that with American actors in Japan telling that story. It's pretty terrifying." |

General Cast News |
TV Gal Plays Casting Agent Oh, dear readers, if you learn one thing from me let it be this -- you just can't get too attached. The TV industry is a fickle business. Beloved shows are abruptly cancelled (let's pause once again for a moment of silence for "Boomtown.") Favorite characters are suddenly written off (seriously, I'm still bitter about Detective Danny Sorenson on "NYPD Blue"). Pilots that look like sure things never see prime time (how long were we hearing about the remake of "Dark Shadows.")
Cast mentioned include Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield and Iyari Limon. |

Sarah M. Gellar News |
Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy Movie Sarah Michelle Gellar was asked recently, at Comic-Con, whether or not she envisions a “Buffy” film ever happening. “A Buffy and Angel movie?…that’s actually one I haven’t heard before”, Gellar said, according to a transcript at SMGFan. “Um, you know, the answer to that is that I don’t know what’s going to happen with that. I know there’s been a lot of talk about it. You know, for those of you who don’t know this….there was a Buffy movie originally, and I spent the first two years of my show trying to explain to people “no, no, no, it’s different than the movie. It’s different than the movie”….and part of the reason the movie didn’t work was because Buffy was a story, in my opinion, that needed to be told over a period of time. And it works…to me it worked better when you spent time. And it wasn’t over so neatly. I wish the finale was two hours. It didn’t seem long enough to me. [crowd cheer in agreement] And I would be really fearful of putting all of that heart and all of those characters into two hours because I know that at some point there would be a letdown…whether Xander didn’t get featured enough, or Willow…or whatever it was. And um…if someone came to me and it looked like just the perfect two hours that I thought wouldn’t disappoint…then it would absolutely be something that I would consider, but I haven’t seen that yet”. Don't see it happening myself. |

Buffy News |
Rest in Peace: A Tight Crew Helped Buffy Knock 'Em Dead Now in its seventh and likely final season, with lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar quitting the show, UPN’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a well-earned reputation for witty tales of the undead, sophisticated special effects, and even the odd musical number. What’s less widely celebrated is its status as one of the smoothest-running shows in the business. “It’s the best-oiled machine I’ve ever been a part of,” reported associate producer Denise Pleune, whose credits include stints on The X Files and who was “a big Buffy fan” before she joined the show. |

Buffy News |
Buffy Takes on Religion Jana Riess liked watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- a lot. She liked the television show's witty dialogue and demon butt-kickings. But there were other reasons she was drawn to the one-hour comedy-drama, which had a seven-season run. Riess, the religion book review editor for Publishers Weekly magazine, said she was having conversations -- serious, deep conversations -- with friends and colleagues, stemming from the spiritual and ethical aspects of Buffy and its characters. |

Joss's X-Men News |
Astonishing X-Men #3 Review The meat of this issue is exactly the right move for this story to make at this time. Whedon has set up the basic issues for his limited run: a cure for mutancy exists, it’s apparently legitimate, and various factions are involved in the creation of it. Rather than explore those factions in detail yet, Whedon keeps the focus on his main characters, and their varied reactions to this climactic news. There’s no way this topic is not politicized, not for these warriors on the front lines of mutant rights. So here Whedon has allowed himself to do what he does best, what he developed so well in three excellent TV shows: he lets people who care deeply about each other rip each other apart while we watch. |
