Joss News |
Astonishing X-Men #4 Review Of course not in my wildest dreams could I have expected Marvel to scoop up Joss Whedon in a weak moment. The writing genius behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to make the impossible look easy. He scribes rich, characteristic dialogue that goes down smooth. He deepens a plot that already had enough depth to keep me involved, and he does all of this through an economy of words and twists to create a sublime tableau. |

Two Guys, a Grrl & A Jiffy Pop So the new TV season approaches, and as near as I can tell, the creative landscape is bleaker and more barren than ever. A few low-lights: The WB cancelled Angel , which means that a year after Buffy limped to a close and Firefly got buried, TV is now fully purged of its quirkiest and most profound voice, Joss Whedon. Meanwhile, Fox pulled the plug on Wonderfalls, an intriguing offering from Whedon associate Tim Minear, after something like three episodes on Friday night. Fox also barely renewed Arrested Development, a truly hilarious ensemble comedy (and arguably the first new quality sitcom in years) that won universal rave reviews and solid ratings. |

David Boreanaz News |
Sequel Rumors Attack Looks like the interview with David Boreanaz the other day which mentioned he was in a big movie with 'Four' in it isn't "Fantastic Four" or Indy IV but the next "Jurassic Park". Casting is about to happen on the project and people who've put feelers out have apparently been told Boreanaz will have the lead role. |

When Hollywood Studios Attack There's an old adage in business that says your best advertising is good word-of-mouth. Just imagine if your friendly local plumber was just so good at what he does that the neighbors got together and put up a website in his honor. Not only would the plumber probably be flattered to no end, he'd be absolutely giddy at all the business that would come his way as a result. |

Charisma News |
Carpenter Rules Out Angel Former Angel star Charisma Carpenter told TV Guide Online that she's not interested in reprising the role of Cordelia Chase in any proposed Angel TV movies or feature films. "You know, I'm not interested," she told the site. "Not because of [star] David [Boreanaz] or anyone I worked with. I think we're all just done. I don't think my fans should be offended, because they're not Angel- or Buffy-specific. They've proven over time that they'll follow me no matter what I do, so I'm not afraid of taking anything away from them, and I hope they wouldn't feel that way." Boreanaz has also said he's not interested in doing a TV movie, but might consider a feature film. |

What's Left to Watch on Whedon Free TV? As I sit on my couch being happily mesmerized by the Summer Olympics in Athens, I know they won’t last forever, much as I might wish that to be the case. So, once the closing ceremonies are over and the flame has been extinguished, what’s a girl to do? I have too many years of centering my television viewing schedule around ANGEL and BUFFY. It just became habit, I suppose. Sure, I have my DVDs of both shows and of FIREFLY handy, and I’ll be first in line to pick up producer Tim Minear’s WONDERFALLS when all thirteen episodes are released on DVD in December, but what’s left to watch on television now? |

The show will follow AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE and FAMILY GUY. The show will be a stop-motion parody, “... like 'The Night Before Christmas,' but spoofing," Green said. "Like a 'Saturday Night Live' variety show, but with toys and dolls and stuff like that. It's hard to explain, but it just looks really funny." |

Charisma News |
Charmed gets Charisma Charisma Carpenter is best known from her popular stints as Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel. What's she been doing since both vampire shows bit the dust? Last year, she gave birth to son Donovan Charles (who's now 16 months old). Then this June, the 34-year-old Hollywood mom reclaimed her va-va-voom by posing nearly nude in Playboy. She'll continue her hot streak by guest-starring as a sexy seer on Charmed in at least two episodes. (Her first appearance airs Sept. 26.) Last week, TV Guide Online visited the Charmed set to watch Carpenter torment costar Brian Krause (Leo) with her spooky predictions. We also stole some time to dish between scenes. |

Seth Green News |
Coming Soon To Cable: Seth Green Playing With Dolls Forget the paddle, right now Seth Green is without a title. The actor, whose "Without a Paddle" opened Friday, is launching an animated series in the winter. Just don't ask what it's called. Clearing a name has not been easy. "It's a really complicated process where the lawyers tell you, 'You can't call it that,' " Green said recently. "'We want the show to be called 'Buggy-boo.' 'No, sorry.' 'Bugaloo?' 'Uh-uh. No.' 'Boogadie-boogadie-boo?' 'No, none of those are good. Some guy in Arkansas has a Web site that's all devoted to porn called Boogadie-boogadie-boo.' It's like, 'Huh?' " |

Boob Tube: Spoiled Rotten "Spoilers" are a funny thing. Little facts and titbits which would "spoil" the plot of a TV series, novel, book, or comic, spoilers have become part of the lexicon not only of the hardcore Internet savvy fan, but the mainstream viewer as well, as the word has filtered out into common usage over the last few years. Mainstream magazines use it regularly, even TV series stars an writers bandy it about in casual conversation. Spoilers are a hazard of the information age; some fans stock-in-trade, for others the bane of their existence. |

Michelle News |
Fashion Police & Michelle Wow! What's gotten into sweet and innocent little Michelle Trachtenberg? Our all grown up Slayer player looks way hotter than usual at the Teen People party in Los Angeles in a ginger frock, gold accessories and a wicked grin. Could it be the spillover from that steamy sex scene with her character's hunky gay black bodyguard on HBO's Six Feet Under? Hey, we'd be smiling, too. |

Firefly News |
The Ascendance of Firefly A firefly is a creature given to metaphor. Short-lived, dazzling, and surprisingly bright, it conveniently mirrors larger occurrences in history and allows us to essentialize and encapsulate them in one convenient image. When Joss Whedon gave his FOX show the moniker Firefly, I don’t think he did so with the foresight that it would so closely mirror the actual lifespan of the little bug. I’d like to think, rather, that he knew (given the right creative freedom) he could make the show sparkle and delight like its namesake. Happily, he was right, and I was utterly delighted. |

Conventional Wisdom Benz mistakenly thought her first convention — in England about six years ago — would be no big deal. But, "it was insane ... I was really blown away by the whole experience." "I used to feel that people were slightly disappointed when they met me, because I'm not this dark, evil vampire from hell. I'm much sunnier and loopier," says Benz. "But I have to say that my fans know the difference between fantasy and reality. The fans of Angel and Buffy are a pretty intelligent group. |

Angel News |
Watch with Kristin Angel fans, you never cease to amaze me. Though the show is long gone, and we have nothing left but our anger at the WB to cling to, you've still managed to turn it around and do something positive. (Omarosa could learn a thing or two from you.) This week, I received my very first fruit basket from the fruitcakes (I say that lovingly) at Support Spike, along with a 12-inch-tall collectible doll that is making this a one-handed column as we speak--I cannot bear to release my kung-fu grip on wittle Spikey. The fan publicity kits were sent to the WB, Mutant Enemy (Joss Whedon's production company), Fox Studios and a few press types like moi. Their mission: stir up support for a Spike-centered event movie or spinoff series. |

Firefly News |
Born Again TV Shows like the short-lived sci-fi series Firefly, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. This gritty, well-acted space Western, in which an unlikely band of ne'er-do-wells shares various interstellar adventures, was such a surprising success on DVD (boosted by three never-before-aired episodes) that Whedon decided to make his feature-film directing debut a big-screen spinoff from the series. The upcoming Serenity, named for the spaceship on the show, reunites the entire original cast. |
