Serenity News |
The Future May Belong to Those Who Speak Mandarin In his short-lived, space-western series, "Firefly," Joss Whedon already has. Throughout the dozen or so episodes, Whedon and his writers have his characters (none of whom are Asian) occasionally break into Chinese. Think it's odd for Caucasian and black characters set 500 years from now to be uttering Mandarin phrases out of the blue? |

Serenity News |
Joss Whedon and a Few of His "Serenity" Cast Turn Up at Wonder Con 2005 Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly”) can get a crowd worked up into a frenzy like no other filmmaker around. His entrance on stage at the 2005 Comic Con was met with a standing ovation, after which he proceeded to have the audience so caught up in his charms, they did practically everything but worship at his feet. Whedon began his presentation by saying he’s still in the process of putting together “Serenity.” With a scheduled release date of September 30th, Whedon joked he knows he’s supposed to finish it up soon but added, “I may just workshop it for a few years,” a statement met with a mixture of groans and laughter by the Joss Whedon faithful. |

Angel DVD News |
DVD Feature: Fallen Angel To celebrate the final season of “Angel” on DVD, We take a look back at one heck of a show, that, far from deserved to be staked. When it became unmistakably clear that the character of "Angel", Buffy Sommers beau on TV’s "Buffy", was just as popular as the title character herself, creator Joss Whedon suggested to the network that they should do a spin-off. Since Buffy basically ‘made’ the WB network, they were happy to fulfil the proposal. For the uninitiated, Angel is a vampire with a soul, seeking redemption after many years of killing innocents. After the demise of his relationship with Buffy (it didn’t help that he turned Bad), there wasn’t much left for him to do in Sunnydale – so he split. |

Serenity News |
ON THE SET: 'Serenity': So Not How Things Should Work See, when you write a movie and it turns out just the way you hoped it wouldn't, you're supposed to lick your wounds, cash the check and move on to writing another script that a director will again turn into something that embarrasses you when you hear it mentioned in the supermarket. |

Joss Whedon News |
Buffy's Whedon Wooed for Wonder Woman The long-gestating "Wonder Woman" project may actually come to term thanks to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon. "The Matrix" producer Joel Silver revealed at the 2005 San Francisco WonderCon on Saturday, Feb. 19 that he's courting the popular writer-director for the project featuring the lasso-wielding superhero, report news sources.
Bassinger The Wonder Woman Front Runner The eternally spunky Kim Basinger - most recently seen in, what I thought was junk, "Cellular" - is Producer Joel Silver's first-choice to play "Wonder Woman" in the forthcoming pic, says The New York Post. Silver wants Basinger to play a more mature Wonder Woman. If the studio ultimately doesn't go for his aged-superheroine idea, he's also fancying "Blade Trinity" babe Jessica Biel. |

General News |
Dumpster Busting TV: Buffy’s Lost Connection For fans of innovative, story-arc driven, genre blending television, there’s little argument that the two biggest names of the last decade are Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams. It’s a lamentable fact indeed that with the cancellation of both Firefly and Angel, Whedon has finally been driven off the idiot box (though into the open embrace of film, where he has been quite busy, especially in helming Serenity, Firefly’s transition to the silver screen, due to release this Fall). |

Jewel Staite News |
A Note from Jewel Staite Spring has sprung! It's still damn cold, but I see cherry blossoms, so I've convinced myself that pretty soon the winter jackets will have to be stored away. Then again, come February, isn't everyone slightly delusional that spring has arrived? Unless you're lucky enough to live somewhere where it's warm all year round? |

Angel DVD News |
DVDVerdict.com Angel Season 5 DVD Review And so the "Buffyverse" and all extensions thereof came to an end when the highers-up at the WB television network decided to pull the plug on Angel, and lay to rest the adventures of the brooding vampire with a soul. A spinoff that, for my money, outperformed its source show, Angel etched its legacy into the annals of genre television with the necessary ingredients—humor, action, unpredictability, demons, prophecies, wrist-mounted grappling hooks, father-son love triangles, and, ultimately, too small of a following, rabid and devoted as it may be. It cannot be said, however, that Angel went quietly into that good night. The show's fifth and final season, sporting some of heavyweight writers imported from Buffy, represented an explosion of creativity and innovation, and while the format relied less on season-long story arcs (as it did in the second, third, and fourth seasons) what eventually unspooled were 22 episodes of unrestrained imagination—and one of the best television series finales ever. |

Firefly Merchandise News |
Firefly Figures! Along with the usual Buffy and Angel figures which are being released at this year's Toyfair 2005 - DST let us see the new Firefly figures too but alas, didn't let us take photos of them. They'll be out in September around the time the movie comes out. The figures will be Mal, a Mal variant, Jayne, a Jayne variant and something else that I don't know what it was...and since I didn't read the script...I can only speculate. It was some kind of monster. |

Angelic Recruits There’s a rumor going around that a couple big-name comic writers are lining up to potentially do Angel miniseries for IDW later this year. From what I can gather, nothing has been signed just yet… Incidentally, former ATR scribe, Markisan Naso recently interviewed Jeff Mariotte about IDW’s first Angel miniseries. You can check it out here. |

Joss Whedon the reluctant genius of "Buffy" and "Angel" fame greeted a roaring crowd of die hard fans as the "Serenity" panel opened Saturday at Wonder Con 2005. BtVS News |
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2? Much in the same way that the Austin Powers sequel out-grossed its predecessor with one strong opening weekend, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer 2 looks to have a similar scenario. The original Buffy only managed to scrape together $16 million in 1992, with the resulting TV show finding a core audience in 1997. Since Buffy 2 is based on the television show using many of the same actors, the film could plausibly out-pace the original mid-way through its second day at the box office. Rumors about the sequel set Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her cohorts in the distant future, where vampires outnumber humans by a significant margin. |

Serenity News |
Serenity Comics Due Soon Joss Whedon, director of the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told fans that he will oversee a three-issue Dark Horse series of Serenity comics as a prequel to his upcoming SF movie of the same name, based on Fox's canceled SF western series Firefly. "Dark Horse is putting out a three-issue prequel to the movie Serenity that will sort of bridge the show and movie for some people," Whedon, an avowed comic fan and creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told an audience at WonderCon in San Francisco on Feb. 19. "That's going to be coming out starting in the summer. ... It's going to be written by Brett Matthews [who authored Dark Horse Angel comics] from a story we're working on." |
