Full
Metal Jacket DVD
Starring: Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, Dorian Harewood, Ed O'Ross
Directed by: Stanley Kubrick
A superb ensemble cast falls in for action in Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant saga about the Vietnam War and the dehumanising process that turns people into trained killers. Joker (Matthew Modine), Animal Mother (Adam Baldwin), Gomer (Vincent D’Onofrio), Eightball (Dorian Harewood), Cowboy (Arliss Howard) and more - all are plunged into a boot-camp pitbulled by a leatherlung D.I. (Lee Ermey) who views the would-be devil dogs as grunts, maggots or something less. From its rigours of basic training to its nightmare of combat in Hue City, Full Metal Jacket scores a cinematic direct hit.

28
Days DVD
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Dominic West, Viggo Mortensen, Elizabeth Perkins, Steve Buscemi, Azura Skye, Diane Ladd, Margo Martindale
Directed by: Betty Thomas
"Alcohol is like love: the first kiss is magic, the second is intimate, the third is routine" (Raymond Chandler). Successful New York writer Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock) rarely stops at just three kisses: she's a party girl who ricochets from nightclub to bar, from one hangover to the next. Her boyfriend Jasper (Dominic West) exhibits the same self-destructive streak so Gwen can't see the damage she's doing to herself, not until she turns up half drunk for her sister Lily's (Elizabeth Perkins) wedding and trashes the reception and the bridal limo.
Fortunate not to end up in jail, Gwen is sent to a rehabilitation clinic for 28 days where, under the aegis of counsellor Cornell (Steve Buscemi), she's told to get her life in order. Despite some initial hostility, Gwen's carefully constructed defences can only withstand so much pressure and eventually the companionship of her fellow rehabbers forces her to take a good long hard look at herself...

Brian's
Song DVD
Starring: Sean Maher, Mekhi Phifer
Directed by: John Gray
Sean Maher and Mekhi Phifer star in this excellent remake of the 1971 Emmy Award-winning drama about the friendship between football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers. When Gale Sayers joins the Chicago Bears in 1965, the running back is befriended by fellow rookie Brian Piccolo, a brash young man whose personality is the exact opposite of the stoic Sayers. As their friendship begins, the two compete for starting positions on the team, but Sayers' talent far outshines Piccolo's and he quickly rises to the top of the game.
When they become roomates, their friendship deepens, and when Sayers injures his knee, it is Piccolo who encorages him to get back in shape and back in the game - if only so Piccolo can compete against him on an even playing field. Both men become better ball players because of - and in spite of - each other, and when Piccolo begins his descent into illness, they form a bond that will last forever...
