Sarah Michelle Gellar News
The Return of Sarah Michelle Gellar Gellar plays Joanna Mills, a tough young Midwesterner determined to learn the truth behind the increasingly terrifying supernatural visions that have been haunting her. Joanna has made a successful career for herself, as sales representative for a trucking company. But her private life has been difficult; estranged from her father (Sam Shepard), stalked by an obsessed ex-boyfriend (Adam Scott), and with few friends, Joanna fears that she is losing control. She sees and feels the brutal murder of a young woman she's never met, at the hands of a heartless killer - a man who appears to be making Joanna his next target. Determined to fight back, Joanna is guided by her nightmares to the murdered woman's hometown. Once there, she will discover that some secrets can't be buried; some spirits never die; and that the murder she is trying to solve may be her own.

BtVS Comics News
First Look: The new 'Buffy' comic From comics she was born, and to comics she shall return: Buffy the Vampire Slayer's post-cancellation adventures will soon begin anew -- penned by Joss Whedon himself -- in the pages of Dark Horse Comics. Here's an exclusive cover image (by artist Georges Jeanty) from issue No. 1. As you can see, she's kept in shape during her hiatus. (Dark Horse will debut No. 1 at Comic-Con this week.) This isn't Buffy's first foray into comics. And it remains to be seen if it ranks anywhere near Joss Whedon's best foray into comics: the all-too-brief "future slayer" saga Fray, which follows the dystopic advetures of Buffster's 24th-century successor. (Some will persuasively argue that this is Joss' best comics effort. I will counter with a spin move and the old axe-to-the-head. So watch it.)

Mark Lutz News
Mark Lutz had his own Olympic dream, now he gets to play a gold medalist Mark Lutz is a natural to be working on a film about swimmer Victor Davis. The Montreal-born Lutz spent much of his youth swimming with the Pointe Claire Swim Club, and he dreamed of swimming for Canada at the Olympics. But his Olympics dreams came crashing down when Lutz blew out his shoulder in his early 20s. A couple of operations later, his competitive swimming career was over. He turned to acting and has since carved out a niche for himself in the American TV biz, appearing in shows like Friends, ER and, most notably, the cult hit Angel, in which he played the half-human/half-demon Groosalugg.

Serenity News
Serenity HD DVD Reviewed Joss Whedon's portfolio as a screenwriter is decidedly chequered. Throughout the 1990s, he made something of a name for himself doing uncredited rewrites on everything from the lamentable Twister to the phenomenally successful X-Men, as well as contributing to the screenplays for the wonderful Toy Story and the embarrassing Titan AE. Despite his feature writing credits, however, he is still best known as the creator of cult TV hits Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and, more recently, the short-lived Firefly, a "Sci-fi Western" series that was cancelled by producer 20th Century Fox mid-way through its first season, with many of the episodes that had been filmed eventually only surfacing on DVD.

Alyson Hannigan News
No More Buffy for Aly Oh, and for all you Buffy fans out there, Hannigan says she doesn't know anything about a movie, but that she doesn't think she'll be in it. “I think I'm pretty well gone after that finale,” she says in that sweet voice. “But, you never know.”

Anthony Stewart Head
Anthony - Big in America Dollar rating: About Ł4.3m, based on earnings of $50,000 per episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its 144-show run. It all happened over a cup of coffee. The Camden-born actor came to fame on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 1980s for his starring role in the Nescafe Gold Blend adverts (known as Tasters' Choice, state-side). Wider recognition earned him a role in a new American television series about a high school student who keeps vampires at bay between lessons. Buffy the Vampire Slayer became one of the most popular shows of the 1990s, with Head playing the part of the professorial Rupert Giles, a "watcher" whose job is to tutor the show's eponymous star in how to kill her fanged foes.
Why Do You think Serenity Failed at the Box Office? I'm going to say: because it was episodic. There were something like four self-contained episodes in the story. Each resolved almost completely, leaving just enough plot to ignite the next episode. So the movie didn't feel like a coherent story. It felt like a bunch of television episodes rammed together.

Alyson Hannigan News
Willow Top TV Sidekick The once-mousy No. 2 behind Buffy's hottie superhero, Willow (a nerd-cool pioneer) tempered the vampire slayer's quip-spouting, melodramatic ways with patience, reason, and a readiness to roam the nether regions of the demon world. Eventually, Willow developed her own superidentity — without ever upstaging her stake-wielding pal — by dating a werewolf, becoming a scary-good witch, and gracefully outing herself.

Firefly News
Adventures in Font Matching I have always enjoyed looking through font books. I get a special joy out of the fact that the fonts that make my favorite movies and TV shows and such are available for purchase and download (some just download as they are offered for free). I remember flipping through the old Letraset catalog back when type was still rubbed down and the feeling of “I know I’ve seen this before…but where?” that I’d get when I spied a font that had long been associated with a corporate logo or pop culture icon. I dig this stuff. I’m by no means an expert at it, but I really dig it, you know?

Firefly/Serenity News
The End of a Whole Mess An editorial highlights Firefly and Serenity: I’ve never been sympathetic to the fluoridated-water-is-a-Commie-plot crowd in real life, but in science fiction it can be a useful shortcut for exploring tensions between individual freedom and the greater good. Fans of the cancelled Fox TV series Firefly found out that government pharmaceutical meddling was indeed the root of all evil when Serenity, a terrific space cowboy movie based on the series, came out last year. The libertarian right loves Firefly — I remember how pleased Samizdata’s Perry De Havilland was when he visited Los Angeles and met Tim Minear, one of the show’s writers — but I should note that Firefly is also a great favorite of the lefty blog Crooks and Liars’ John Amato.
