The Box Says:
DARKNESS AND LIGHT The Creature from the Black Lagoon’s less attractive cousin has hit the Sunnydale scene, and Buffy and Co. are all over the new threat. So the Scoobs are stunned, naturally, when members of the Watcher’s Council arrive, explaining - or rather, insisting - that they’ve got the matter “under control.” Enter Faith. The Council has found a way to spring the rogue-but-repentant Slayer from jail to combat the water beast, and she is enjoying her stint as “the Good One.” Buffy, a self-declared independent operator for quite some time, thinks she is going to have to do a little digging. What connection could the Council have to these horrific creatures? There’s some soul-searching in store for the Slayer. Even if Buffy is ready to align with the Council, is this a battle worth fighting?
We think:
I was dissapointed in this, actually :/ I expected a deeper book for some unkown reason - and I couldn't get over how sort of 'lite' it was. I'm probably doing Mr. Golden an injustice, but that's honestly how I felt. I also didn't care for the actual story, either. Underwater demon types do just not do it for me. I remember reading a Star Trek book once that had dolphin crew member [because it was the 'future' and they figured out how to communicate with them and all] - and I could barely get through it. This was sort of like that in that respect.
The other big moan of mine for this was, of course, Spike. I'm sorry, I won't rant and rave here -but I'm so sick to death of that character that when I see him in anything, I want to hit something. sigh
Faith is not too bad in this. Not as canon as I'd hoped, but okay. I like that she was approaced by the Council et al, it rang true and I liked the outcome of that. But because I'm so into Faith, I get annoyed that she's a lesser character - and it takes away from my enjoyment, also. Other chars include the usual - with Tara also there. I liked her, didn't like Willow, Xander was quite good however - ditto Buffy. But...eh. Enduring Buffy/Spike moments about sea demons and grossness that comes with that - the book left me cold.
NOT what I'd hoped and I won't read it again.
