That Night

Synopsis

In 1961, Long Island, Alice is just that bit younger than her playmates. She doesn't quite understand yet about some grownup things and is teased a lot. Her heroine is Sheryl, the teenager over the road who has a succession of boyfriends. Alice even copies her perfume and favourite records, though she has never spoken to her. When Sheryl's father dies suddenly and she takes up with Rick, who is viewed with horror by all the parents around, she and Alice become firm friends as they try to keep the romance going.

Review

'That Night' is the film that should've shot Eliza to instant stardom. However, I'm kind of glad it didn't. Rather than have a glut of 'cute' Macauly Culkin-type films, she was noticed only by people who like films like 'That Night'. A coming-of-age story that is wonderfully acted by everyone. Eliza in particular.

I still have the reviews where she's noted as "a real find." Even at 10, with no formal training, she grabs you. C.Thomas Howell has always been under-rated, and is wonderful. Juliette Lewis is also good but unlike everyone else I didn't go wild about 'what a talent' she was with 'Cape Fear'. I thought she was far better in 'Kalifornia'. However, that said, 'That Night' is a lovely film and the critics were right! Eliza's a real find.

Also noteworthy 'Roswell's Katherine Heigel is also in it as one of Alice's so-called 'friends'.
