Graduation Day 1 Episode Guide

Story Line

Pre-credit has Faith knocking on the door of a Professor Worth. When he opens the door, Faith says: "Hi. I'm looking for Professor Worth?" He tells her that she has to come back during office hours. She explains (a bit nervously) that she's not from the college, that she's there on behalf of the Mayor. He asks her in. He tells Faith (as she looks over his place), that he's surprised to be hearing from the Mayor. He didn't think a politician would be interested in his research. Faith informs him that Mayor Wilkens is a 'big fan'. She then proceeds to ask if they're alone in the apartment. He informs her that they are. Things become sinister when Faith produces a knife and asks 'Lester' to: "Turn and face the wall." Suitably confused, Lester asks: "What are you doing?" We see a fleeting hint of sorrow on Faith's face. However, the condescending way the professor tells her to "Put that away" soon has her back on track. She promises to 'make it quick'. He tells her that he'll scream. In a moment of very black humor, Faith reports with "Who wouldn't?" He asks her "Why?". However, Faith isn't into 'who what where or why'. She replies simply with: "You know. . . I never thought to ask." She then kills the professor.

Post credit sees us back at Faith's apartment. Mayor Wilkens is tidying around and he asks Faith if things "...went smoothly with Mr. Worth.". To which a disembodied voice replies: "Not if you're Mr. Worth." (Faith is changing into a pink dress-unseen) The Mayor laughs and then ends the conversation with "Well, you know how I hate lose ends." He proceeds to straighten the young Slayer's apartment. Eventually, he asks if she's ". . .ever coming out of there?". Faith feels very uncomfortable and replies that she ". . .doesn't know.". The Mayor cajoles her out with "Oh, come on." She uncomfortably walks out in the dress that he's bought her. He sits and tells her she's a vision. She replies: " I feel I look stupid in this." He shakes his head and honestly tells her she looks lovely.

Like a caring father, the Mayor goes on to tell Faith that the dress is perfect for the ascension and any boys that survive will be lining up to ask her out. (This scene is beautiful between Eliza and Harry. Very tender) Faith, still incredibly uncomfortable, tells him that she feels: "It just isn't me, though." Once again, the Mayor boosts her confidence. He walks over to her, looking her in the eye and genuinely feeling for her, tells her: "Nobody knows what you are. Not even you! Little Miss 'Seen-it-all'." He goes on, trying to bolster her esteem. He tells her that: "The Ascension just isn't my day. It's yours too. Your day to blossom. Show the world what a powerful girl you are. When I think of what you've done. What I know you will do." He gently puts a strand of her hair that has fallen out of place back. "No father could be prouder." Faith, looks to him and says: "I hope I don't let you down." The Mayor reports with: "Impossible." He then tells her to change back into her street clothes. He then lightens the mood (as only he can) by saying he'll buy her an icy. Faith finally smiles and goes to change.

In the interim, Buffy is convinced that Worth's murder was committed by Faith and she wants to 'investigate' his apartment. Both Giles and Wesley tell her not to under-estimate Faith. Buffy states that Faith isn't much for 'follow up'. Also, she states from the outset that she's not about to kill Faith—but she can: ". .make her cry uncle though.—And I intend to." Buffy goes on to tell Wesley that stopping Faith is her 'work'. At that moment, Xander enters with Anya—the only 'person' to have witnessed an Ascension. Anya proceeds to tell Buffy, Giles, Xander and an almost smug Wesley, what she witnessed 800 years ago.

When next we see Faith she's sitting in the 'U' of the cinemaplex. She's just shot Angel with a poisoned arrow. The vamp lackey informs Faith that: "You missed the heart." Faith smiles and replies: "Meant to."

Our next encounter sees Faith entering the Mayor's office. He's about to eat his 'spiders' Faith comes in smiling saying: "He's dropped, boss" The Mayor would probably be more enthused, but he literally has his hands full (with the box) and replies: "Applause applause." Faith continues: "Right in the back. He pitches over and Buffy's freaking— looking around all panicked. It was a good time." She looks to her father figure who has put the box on his desk. He looks up to Faith and responds with: "Well, that should keep her occupied for a spell." Faith asks simply: "What next?" to which the Mayor replies: "The ritual of Gavrock. I have to ingest several of the inhabitants of this box." Faith repeats the word 'ingest', clearly not knowing what it means. The Mayor clears it up for her, simply saying. "Eat." Faith smiles and in her Bostonian colloquialism says: "You're wicked gross." He laughs saying: "Well, you don't have to watch. Just y'know, go home, take it easy. It's a big day tomorrow." Faith protests with: "You gotta gimme somethin' to do. There's no way I'm sleeping. Don't you need anyone dead or . .maimed? Maimed! I can settle for maimed! "

Again, the Mayor laughs fondly. He calls Faith a "Little firecracker." What follows is what seems to be Faith's fondest memories growing up. The Mayor can't help smiling as he listens to her childhood story. "My mom used to call me that—when I was little. I was always running around. . ." She trails, looking slightly sad. Her mood changes and she becomes slightly aggressive. "Tomorrow, at the ascension and all that. . Am I gonna get to fight?" The Mayor is still taken at Faith's revelation. He leans on the box, listening to Faith, attentively. "If everything go smoothly you won't have to. But, how often do things go smoothly?" Faith replies: "So you're still gonna need me in there?" The Mayor smiles. "Always"

Again, Faith smiles at a memory and again the Mayor is entranced. Faith sits down. "When I was a kid, a couple miles outside of Boston there was this quarry— and all the kids used to swim there and jump of the rocks and there was this one rock, like, 40 feet up. I was the only one that would jump of off it. All the older kids were too scared. " The Mayor is caught up. He anticipates her follow-up. "Not you though." Faith smiles. "No. I could do it easy." Both look at each other knowing that tomorrow is a world away from Boston. The Mayor breaks up the trip down memory lane. He tells Faith to: "Get some rest" Faith gets out of the seat and glances at the box. She gives him a small smile: "Good luck with your spiders there." and leaves.

In the interim, the 'Scooby Gang' are running a trace analysis on the poison. Wesley contacts the 'CoW'. However, they refuse to help a vampire. Buffy, calm, but furious, quits the Council. Wesley (ironically) is the only one that can see the woods for the trees, explaining that Faith poisoned Angel to get Buffy out of the way. But Buffy doesn't care. She only cares about Angel. The 'Gang' find out the poison is called 'Killer of the Dead'. Unfortunately, the only cure is the blood of a Slayer. All bets are off. Buffy's determined to find Faith and kill her.

A small 'training montage' follows. Faith at the punching bag, training physically. Buffy preparing mentally. She also takes Faith's knife (that she lost in Choices)

Cut to Faith's apartment where she's reading comics and listening to music. Suddenly, the music stops. Faith turns to see Buffy. She's not surprised. She smiles. Buffy speaks first: "I thought I'd stop by." She says almost casually. Faith's dark question is almost tinged with delight: "Is he dead yet?" She gets up of the bed she was reading on, and faces Buffy who informs her: "He's not gonna die. It was a good try though. Your plan?" Faith smiles and moves slightly closer to Buffy: "Uh-Huh. Mayor got me the poison. He said it was wicked painful." Buffy, unmoved by Faith's apparent enthusiasm replies calmly: "There's a cure." Faith, still happy at Buffy's arrival (probably thinking Angel was dead and Buffy was there for revenge) merely states: "Damn. What is it?" Buffy replies: "Your blood." There's a dramatic pause here. Then Buffy proceeds as Faith takes it in. "As justice goes, it's not unpoetic. Don't you think?"

Faith doesn't bother with a reply. She merely states the obvious: "Come to get me? Gonna feed me to Angel? You know you're not gonna take me alive!" Buffy coldly states that it's: "Not a problem." Faith is intrigued now. Taunting Buffy, she walks closer saying: "Look at you! All dressed up in big sister's clothes." Buffy moves toward Faith now, telling her: "You told me I was just like you. That I was just holding it in." Faith merely asks: "Ready to cut loose?" Buffy replies: "Try me." Both girls only inches away from each other. Faith smiles: "O.K. then. . .Give us a kiss." (Buffy strikes Faith-Faith returns the favor. Then it's on.) After what could only be termed as 'round one', Faith gets Buffy in a headlock saying: "You're not getting tired are you? I'm just starting to feel it." Buffy breaks loose. As is tradition now, the fight takes both Slayers through glass (in this case, the window). Both Slayers are slightly stunned but recover quickly. Buffy cuffs Faith to her saying: "Stick around" (from Enemies).

Cut to the library—Giles & Xander discover how big a demon the Mayor will become. Another edit, and this time we're at the Mayor's office. He's chowing down on the spiders when a vamp runs in and informs him: "Sir, there may be trouble—at Faith's." The Mayor's instantly worried.

Back to the fight and Faith is still cuffed. She manages to get the upper hand by swinging Buffy into a wall a few times. Buffy comes back and gets Faith on her knees. Buffy, taunting Faith says: "What's the matter? All that killing(!) and you're afraid to die?" Faith, angry, punches Buffy in the face, flips her on her back and manages to be a literal arms length away from Buffy. She secures her feet against B's shoulder and pulls with all her Slayer strength at the cuffs. The cuffs break. Faith grabs a mid-length pipe, while Buffy takes out Faith's knife. Faith notices it and says: "That's mine." Buffy replies: "You're about to get it back." Faith swings at Buffy, knocking her over. Buffy comes back fast. Both Slayers are now on the edge of the roof. Faith looks down to the road, then back at Buffy and says: "Man, I'm gonna miss this." Buffy steadies herself and knifes Faith in the stomach. Faith looks down at the knife. Buffy is far from jubilant. Faith looks at her fellow Slayer, in pain, saying: "You did it." Buffy's stunned. Taking advantage, Faith takes a swing and knocks Buffy away from the edge. She looks down at her wound again, then to Buffy saying: "You killed me." Then she looks down to the road and sees a truck coming. Lifetime of practice kicks in. She looks back to Buffy, stepping onto the ledge of the building and says: "Still won't help your boy though." She smiles. "You shoulda been there B. Quite a ride." Faith then deliberately falls back of the building. Her timing is perfect. She lands on the truck and Buffy can only watch from the roof, as the truck keeps on going down the road. To be continued...
