Willow tells Tara in Dead Things that she has done no spells for thirty-two days. She gave up magic after endangering Dawn in Wrecked. Willow had a small lapse in Doublemeat Palace after Amy gave her a spell though Willow didn’t want it.

In Dead Things, Jonathan uses his magic bone, which first appeared in the episode Life Serial. He also uses his shape-shifting spell from Life Serial to turn himself into Katrina.

In Dead Things, Buffy believes that she’s killed a human, which echoes the earlier episode Ted, where she killed her mother’s boyfriend, who turned out to be a robot.

In Dead Things, Buffy says of her bedroom, “I think the New Kids On The Block posters are starting to date me.” She’s referring to the American boy band, who formed in 1984, and split up by 1994.

Bernard Addison, who played a cop in Dead Things, appeared in the Buffy spin-off show Angel as “Root Monster” in the episode ‘Couplet‘. He also played a waiter in a couple of episodes of Frasier.

Rock Reiser, who played the desk sergeant at the Police Station in Dead Things, has also appeared in Never Been Kissed, Letters from a Killer, Charmed, ER, Melrose Place and Northern Exposure.

In Doublemeat Palace, Xander says, “I thought Jonathan completely learned that lesson”. He’s referring to the events of Superstar, in which Jonathan created a spell to be everyone’s ideal. The spell went horribly wrong.

In Doublemeat Palace, Buffy mentions she has waitressed before in an L.A diner with lots of people who didn’t tip. This is a reference to season three’s opening episode Anne, where Buffy ran away briefly to L.A.

Kirsten Nelson played Buffy’s boss and manager Lorraine Ross in Doublemeat Palace and Normal Again. She has been in The O’Keefes (as Ellie O’Keefe), Baby’s Day Out, The Fugitive, Frasier, Ally McBeal, The West Wing, Just Shoot Me and Boy Meets World.

In Gone, Buffy namechecks invisible girl Marcie Ross from Out of Mind, Out of Sight:

Xander: “Buffy, how did this hap– wait a sec. Have you been feeling ignored lately?”
Buffy: “Yeah, ignored. I wish. No, this isn’t a Marcie deal.”

After making social worker Doris Kroeger look crazy in Gone, Buffy whistles part of her song ‘Going Through the Motions’ from Once More, With Feeling. She whistles “I can’t even see, if this is really me” - a fitting choice for the episode.

In Flooded, Andrew says, “I had nothing to do with the devil dogs. I trained flying demon monkeys to attack the school play. School play, dude!” In Gone, he tells Buffy, “I summoned the flying monkeys that attacked the high school.”

Willow tells Amy in Smashed that Larry was gay (discovered in Phases) and that he died in the attack by the Mayor in the season three finale Graduation Day (Part 2). Larry’s death was never explicitly stated before this episode.
