Blood links

We discover in Somnabulist that vampires who are linked by blood (such as a sire) can sense each other’s presence and can be physically linked in dreams. This occured when Angel began to dream about the murders commited by the vampire he sired, Penn.

Willow
Crucifix

A crucifix is a Christian symbol which depicts the cross on which Jesus was crucified. It can be used to repel vampires, and will burn their skin if it touches them. For some reason, it also repels non-Christian vampires. For example in Doppelgängland, Willow, a Jewish vampire, was warded off …

Dart to heart

It is well-established that though a vampire possesses a heart, it does not pump and, accordingly, does not circulate blood through the vampire’s vestigial circulatory system. (Recall in the episode of Angel, when electro-Gwen kisses Angel, we, the gentle viewers (sorry), are given a rather graphic demonstration of Angel’s …

Dodgy mythology

A discrepancy (and not the last!) in vampire mythology is shown at the beginning of Never Kill a Boy on the First Date. When Buffy stakes a vampire, he leaves a ring behind, but in all other cases when a vamp is staked everything turns to dust including clothing and …

Drowning a vamp

In Showtime, we see the First Evil (in the guise of Drusilla) instructing a Turok-Han to hold Spike’s head underwater. Slightlyembarrased wrote the following on this site: “As I understand it, vampires do not breathe (a point made time and again through this series as well as Angel), so why …

Dusting vampires

When vampires are killed (via wooden stakes, sunlight or beheading), they turn to dust. The Scoobies use the word as a verb to describe killing a vampire (i.e. “We dusted him”). The first person to use the word in this way on the show was Buffy in The Harvest, “So, …

Garlic

Traditionally, garlic is supposed to ward off vampires, though no explanation is properly given why. Buffy uses garlic, hoping to put off Spike if he tries to go to her house, in Wrecked. She also hung garlic in her room in Passion, when Angel was a threat.

Harvest Time

The Harvest was a ritual to release The Master, and reopen Sunnydale’s Hellmouth. In the episode The Harvest, the Master joined his power with a ‘vessel’ (the vampire Luke) who then set about feeding from humans to give sustenance to the Master. Buffy killed Luke before he succeeded in setting …

Healing ritual

In What’s My Line? (Part 1), Spike and his gang discovered a healing ritual for sick vampires hidden in the Du Lac Manuscripts. He used the ritual on Drusilla by tying her and Angel (her sire) together, and putting a dagger through their hands. The dagger was hidden within The …

Holy water
Holy Water

Holy Water is water that has been blessed by a member of the clergy. Like other religious symbols (such as the crucifix) it burns vampires, and can even kill them if it touches them in large amounts. Holy Water has been used as a weapon occasionally in the Buffyverse. In …

Invitation addendum

Another vampire invitation rule is clarified in Real Me: only someone who lives in a residence can invite a vampire in. So, for example, Xander couldn’t invite a vampire in Buffy’s house.

Killer of the Dead

Killer of the Dead is a poison used to kill vampires. It causes extreme pain, and a long death. Faith shot Angel with an arrow dipped into the poison in Graduation Day (Part 1). The only cure is for a vampire to drink the blood of a vampire Slayer. After …

Master’s skeleton

When the Master is killed in Prophecy Girl, only his soft tissue is dusted: his skeleton stays intact. There is no explanation for this other than as a plot device for the season two premiere When She Was Bad.

Public places

A vampire can enter a public place such as a school or hospital (this is seen in Passion and Killed By Death). In Passion Angel says the sign outside the school says ‘Romatia transicara edicatorum’ which translates to ‘Enter all ye who seek knowledge’.

Revivification spell

A revivification spell is a ritual to bring a dead vampire back to life. The ritual requires the bones of the vampire (if available) and the blood of the humans nearest to the vampire when it was dusted. The Anointed One instructed his lackeys to perform the ritual in When …
