Marti on the end of season six

Marti Noxon had the following to say about the end of season six:

“It was the first season climax that Joss did not write and direct. There were some production problems. I was massively pregnant at that point and a little slow on my feet, so it wasn’t as easy-going as some episodes that we’ve done.” (1)

Marti had a great deal of influence on this season, as Joss was away a lot of the time, and many fans who were disgruntled with season six blamed her for it’s outcome. Marti said in an interview with the BBC:

“I’ve been accused of being the sort of pain and chains girl. My episodes are often about dark issues and nasty sex. Joss would say that until I got this show, it wasn’t quite as nasty, and I take that as a compliment.” (2)

It didn’t seem like Gellar enjoyed season 6 either, in the interview for Entertaiment Weekly “Buffy Quits”, she says it wasn’t who Buffy was, and wasn’t the character she loved.

I have to agree with her, the show success was the blend of humor and horror, with the trials of triblations of real life with monsters of being metahphors for that, season 6 felt more like you were watching a daytime soap, with over the top sex, enough depression and personal problems for 100 people let alone 4, drug additicion, jilted love and on and on.

I think Noxon’s vision of the show as a teen soap, or she wanted to make her mark on the show once she got the helm, whatever happened, it didn’t work.

      I agree.
      Season 6 was awful..
I hated Buffy and Spike and got pretty disgusted by theire sexy scens—

I never actually liked Buffy (as a character-person), so that part didn’t bother me. Season 6 was the beginning of the end, as far as having good strong writing and stories. That said, I still enjoy watching parts of season 6, the musical, tabula rasa (Randy Giles!), evil willow…but i tend to skip more episodes in that season than in the others that I own and watch regularly.

I’ve only seen the series through once, on TV (I’ve just started watching it through again on DVD). But as of now season 6 is my favourite season. Seeing the Scoobies dealing with their inner demons helped me feel more sympathy for them than I had before, and I got more emotionally involved in the series. Plus, the musical episode was not only a brilliant episode in itself, it also raised the whole season to a higher level for me. (I love good musicals!)

Season 7 was a bit disappointing, I would agree, but still well worth watching.

    5. Dawn says:

      I loved season 6…
      they all growed up…
its a dark season but its realistci…
everyone goes trough a dark phase in their life…

      Xander/Anya with their wedding
      Willow/Tara with their magic
      Dawn with stealing
Buffy & Spike with their ‘relation’
and Willow going bad after tara dies…

I think this season was really important…
and to have a lot of humor wouldt be appropriate because Buffy just came back from heaven…

This season had to be made just to understand the characters even better

    6. Longlostscooby says:

I liked and disliked season 6 for a few reasons.
My boyfriend and I watched Buffy together and we both loved Spike, so when Buffy and Spike got together we had mixed feelings about the whole situation. Happy they were together but sad because he truly loved her and she treated him like stinky garbage.
I still think Xander was stupid for leaving Anya at the alter and then being all, I still want to be together. Um no, you don’t deserve her now. Although on another hand you can say it’s poetic justice after the thousand plus years that she caused so much misery.
Evil Willow was a great villain so I don’t mind Tara’s death, even though she was sweet (and side note, I loved that she was a real sized person, not a twig like other cast members that will remain unamed.)
Plus Once More With Feeling… favorite episode.
