The British TV show Spaced (1999-2001) references Buffy the Vampire Slayer numerous times: In the episode ‘Dissolution’, Tim tells Brian that his ex-girlfriend Twist is “shallow… like Cordelia from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and latterly Angel which is set in L.A.” In the episode ‘Leaves’, Daisy kicks in a door, Buffy-style. In the episode ‘Ends’, Tim prays to a poster of Sarah Michelle Gellar. In the episode ‘Change’ Tim is awoken suddenly and moans “Buffy”. Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Spaced (in which he stars as Tim Bisley) and Shaun of the Dead, is a self-confessed Buffy fan.

Hi there,
I`ve seen SPACED and got the DVD`s too.
It is one of my most favourite british comedies. incl. Little Britain with Anthony Stuart Head and i recommend both series in a second!!

I’ve purchased though not yet viewed “Little Britain”? It has been trumpeted as an idiosyncratic treasure…or something equally hyperbolic, in the manner in which critics are wont to speak. But now I see b’cakes is giving it two enthusiastic thumbs up (I always wished I had enthusiastic thumbs…), so I may take the plunge soon.

By the by, “Shaun of the Dead” is, perhaps, one of the funniest “horror-comedies” of our time….with “Werewolves of London” a close second.

Yes, and one of the few romantic comedies that I advocate. Of course it also supports my theory that all romantic comedies are crap save for the few that are mixed with other genres. For example, “The Princess Bride” (fantasy, romantic comedy) and “Harold and Maude” (dark*, romantic comedy)
*dark comedy isn’t really its own genre, but its conventions are what make this movie oh so special.

mairce hates “romantic comedies” too…to quote the ever-quotable Andrew, “You are the perfect woman!”
Mairce…what ARE we going to do?

we could continue to amuse and/or bore everyone to death with our flirting or you could be my new best internet friend.

Spaced is a comedy devoutly to be praised - not least because after twelve episodes it was gone. Not cancelled - simply, its work was done. A simple, perfect gem.
Shaun of the Dead is Spaced the movie. With all the actors from Spaced’s mates in it. Because that is what happens when you give a huge comics/movies/stuff fan a pile of cash and say “hey - make a movie”.
It is also one heck of a Romero homage.
