Sometimes Buffy writers leave little jokes of their own in their scripts. The following is a stage direction for Innocence, a little nod to the fact that it costs more for extras to speak: “A couple of soldiers pass. Xander suavely nods to them. They nod back and pass without comment, because they are extras.” Another direction from the same episode regards a kiss between Xander and Cordelia: “They haben der big smootchen.” |

another fine example can be seen/read in “graduation day 2″. here’s an excerpt from the script: “People are helping the wounded into ambulances, milling about in postwar shock, leaving, talking, hugging, crying (probably not crying, they’re extras, but we can always hope).”
i love the way reading the shooting scripts gives a whole depth to the entire Buffy experience. that is how i actually got to know most of the Buffy ‘verse. the writers have these little catch phrases that were never actually used on the screen, that are really priceless. like calling the soon-to-be victim “schmuck bait” or that “they do not speak for they are extras” routine (which were used a zillion times). sometimes these lines crack me up even more than the actual show.

errr…how about for free? :D i’ve been looking for angel shooting scripts since for ever, but i have only come across transcripts. and they are so lacking in flavour.. and now i dont have any clue on what’s happening in angel-town (they haven’t aired a single episode out here). i got my buffys from a site that doesn’t post them anymore for a long time now (what with the script books being out on the market and all) something blue, if you want to i can send the buffy scripts to you, i’m only a couple eps short, which i have replaced with transcripts.

What’s the difference? Between transcripts and the real deal, I mean?
January 23rd, 2006 at 2:07 pm
I may be wrong but I think transcripts are taken from watching an episode and regular scripts were used during shooting (so including little writers’ notes, as mentioned above).

Another great site from transcripts is www.buffyvsangel.com
They have the transcripts for every episode of Buffy and Angel.

Buffyology has every Buffy transcript too.

Jess is correct. The transcripts are the word for word text of what is spoken during an episode and includes some stage-direction type details, although I believe those are added by the transcriber post-airing and not written by the show writers. The shooting scripts are the actual original scripts from the writers with their directions, ideas and with which the Director frames the episode. However, during editing or even filming, things get changed, deleted and moved. So the scripts are the original intentions of the writers with their thoughts included and what actually airs is an edited version of that. What I like about the shooting scripts is that if Buffy gives a meaningful look to Willow or Angel, you think you know why, but the shooting scripts actually sometimes say what she is supposed to be feeling internally in that moment. Very, very cool. Like reading inside writers minds.
An example that I liked, in the shooting script for Innocence, during the scene when Buffy sees Angel for the first time after making love, there is a writers note:
Buffy: (a last plea) “Angel…I love you”
Writers Note:
The son of a bitch actually winks at her
Angel: “Love ya too.”
Additionally, the shooting scripts set this scene outside of Buffy’s house when it ended up being shot in Angel’s apartment. Good inside info from this script.

Note to star*naming: Thank you for trying to send me the scripts via email. I was never able to actually open them, but I did receive 3 script books from my mother-in-law for Christmas, so I was delighted to read them. Thank you for sending me those anyway, though!
