A Nightmare on Elm Street

NOES

The idea of people’s nightmares coming true in the episode Nightmares most likely comes from the A Nightmare on Elm Street movie series, in which villain Freddie Krueger has the ability to hurt people while they sleep.
The demon Der Kindestod in Killed By Death was clearly influenced by the look of Freddie Krueger.

Der Kinderstod was also definitely influenced by folksie granny-wooer Charlie Landsborough - the scary hat cocked at an angle, the smile, the hair…. I shudder everytime I see his “tapes” (No - Charlie can’t be bought on CD, guys) at my grandmother’s house.

The name “Kindestod” could also be a reference to a phenomenon called “Plötzlicher Kindstod” in German (I think the English name is “Sudden Infant Death Syndrom”). It refers to deaths of very young children without any obvious cause.
