A polite note to all

Hi all, apologies, but I need to have a bit of a moan!

Please PLEASE when writing comments on this site, try and use correct English:

1. Do not use ‘text speech’
2. Please capitalize the first letters of each sentence, and any other appropriate word (’I agree’, not ‘i agree’).
3. Please try and use correct spelling, as much as you can. If you’re not sure about a word, you can always check a dictionary.
4. Read through your comments before submitting, to check for any errors.

This will make your comments easier to read.

I try very hard to keep this site to a certain standard and am asking all commentors here to do the same.

I have edited a few comments this evening, but this takes a long time, so please note that any comments which I see not following these guidelines may be deleted. I realise that some people have difficulties in spelling, but a few people here have become quite lazy in their approach to the site.

I appreciate this,

Jess

I am the very worst at capitalising. I will try hard to change my ways, apologies to you Jess. Your website is my favourite thing in the world, and I’m going to embrace the SHIFT key like never before.

    2. Jess says:

Thanks, guys. I hate to seem bossy! Shift key like there’s no tomorrow, cardboardy!

    3. NotFadeAway says:

I personally love the idea of better writing on this great site. Some of the posts are almost impossible to read because of the problems that you mentioned. Thanks for putting up this note.

    4. Mel says:

The one thing I hate about forums is the the way they allow text speak so good on you Jess.

I really don’t see the point of it at all, as most of the time you are only dropping one letter.

I used to go onto a forum where text speak was allowed and I could hardly understand half of what was being posted, it was like a foreign language.

I am that bad, I don’t even use text speak when I text from my phone!

    5. ant4buffy says:

Its the young whippersnappers of today that like to do the text speak. I think its a load of rubbish so nice one Jess for enforcing it.

    6. Jess says:

Excellent - it’s great to see there’s a general consensus on this.

    7. Sunnydalehigh says:

Just thought I’d weigh in also. I agree with the general consensus. If you ever see misspelled words or incorrect English (well, American-English anyway) coming from me, it’s probably just a typo and definitely not intentional.

    8. beagle says:

I will try to do better also. Does this apply to the forum?

    9. Jess says:

Beagle - Not really, the forum is more ‘in the moment’ so fire away on that. It’s really just the standard of the comments on the main site that I want to improve.

Obviously I understand that words get mispelled all the time (even that is probably not how you spell the word!) so don’t worry too much about that. It’s more the capitalization and grammar that needs to improve - including mine! There’s tons of bad English in my trivia.

    10. MagicBone says:

I go on the internet sometimes but everyone’s spelling is bad. It’s depressing.

    11. MagicBone says:

Go mock yourself. (Nice Buffy quote, eh, BoysP?)

I’m on this forum and there’s this girl who abuses text speech. It’s sad. Even sadder is that it is a forum for Philippa Gregory novels, about Tudor England and stuff. The bad thing about forums is that people are too far away to beat incessantly. But in a nice way.

    12. Abby M. says:

I agree with the general consensus. In fact, I think I broke the statisitcs because I am the only one of my friends that doesn’t type like this: “OMG A-B! LIK3 U R KOOL!!! LOL!!!”

    13. MagicBone says:

Well, only because you don’t type to yourself, right?

No, joking, me too. And the thing with the LeTtErS.

      KeWl, rite????

    14. Abby M. says:

      ToTaLLy! :)

    15. somethingblue says:

Thank you, Jess, for upholding standards! Hooray for you and your better sense of class and style! (that’s why we love you so much!) Also, wanted to mention that we’re having a fabulous time on the forums, thanks so much for branching us out, if that makes sense. You are a rock goddess!

    16. Jess says:

Thanks, guys. Glad you’re enjoying the site so much!

    17. MagicBone says:

Well, it’s always fun to mock stupid tXt speek.

      Hi
I’m new, and happy to see correct speech is encouraged. Even on my mobile I tend to use full words - takes longer but then I’m sure people can understand what I’m saying. I did want to ask though - does this mean that even things like LOL aren’t allowed? There is so much humour in Buffy, how are we meant to indicate a fit of the giggles without it?
      Open to suggestions

    19. luckykitty89 says:

I agree with you, alicat17. I can’t stand the text speech but even I have adopted a few shortcuts. LOL is the only one I can think of at the moment but I am sure there must be a few others. (If not than ‘yippee!’ for me, right?)

    20. Soraia says:

I just want to remind everyone that some of the users on this forum and the page is not from English-speaking countries. That’s why some of our comments may seem a bit strange, both regarding spelling and word-placement in the sentences. In Norway we don’t capitolize (is that even a word?) half as much as English people do.

      :o)

    21. MagicBone says:

No, what Jess means if for the native English speakers not to use text speech, like weird abbreviations and add letters to your words, like people do on the internet or in instant messaging.

    22. cardboardy says:

A good reminder, Soraia. People who speak English as their first language have a responsibility to write properly so everyone else can understand it, not just other English speakers.

I guess the message for all is write as well as you can.
(and don’t be lazy with the capitals!!)

    23. Jess says:

“I guess the message for all is write as well as you can. (and don’t be lazy with the capitals!!)”

That’s exactly what I mean, cardboardy! I’m aware that there are a few non-native English speakers who frequent this site.

    24. tadpole says:

I must confess that I have been guilty of the e.e. cummings-like lack of capitalization. I love your site, Jess, and will, therefore, be more precise in my future comments.

However (he says with a lovingly humorous tone), as long as we’re talking standard English, your third point of “try and use correct spelling” should be “try to use correct spelling.” While “try and” has become idiomatic, it is generally considered informal and non-standard.

I type this with a laugh. It’s the teacher of English in me emerging uncontrollably.

I vow to be no longer lazy with my capitals. ;)
