Adoption

Kristine Sutherland revealed Joss’s initial plans for the Summers family, at the beginning of season four:

“I knew that Joyce was going to die suddenly. Initially when we talked, before I went to Italy, Joss’s idea was that Joyce adopted a five or six year old girl. It was interesting how that idea of adoption actually became The Key, and this whole other thing.”

Thank Grud they abandoned the adoption idea at a relatively early stage.

I can just imagine a sickeningly cute little scamp with big moo-cow eyes, being given lines like “I wuv you miss Wuffy”.

I’m sure Joss would never have let it go this far of course, but once you let those bloody kids in, you’re on a slippery slope to “The Cosby Show”.

    Children are demons.

Buffy would have had to kill it.

haha.. um that was a joke, right?

Just be glad the brat is as old as she is… Joss meant to make her about 10 or so.

Connor as a baby ruined much of Angel Season 4(?) for me.

  6. Wynter says:

You mean most of season 3, Connor was a teen for all of season 4. I didn’t find the baby thing annoying though, I liked how it reinforced the team being a “family”.

I must agree with Wynter (as I often seem to do) about Conner and all that. Also, I too am very glad that they didn’t use the adoption idea (and especially that they didn’t bring on a little kid), as that would have been really annoying and all. Of course, it would have been a real shame to not see Dawn and the dynamic there. A little kid would have been awful (although if anyone could make anything work, it would be Joss Whedon).
