Amy Madison

Amy

Amy was a friend of Willow’s at Junior High, and later got to know Buffy. Amy’s mother (Catherine Madison) practised dark magics (The Witch) and Amy later began to dabble in witchcraft. She helped Xander to create a love spell on Cordelia, which went wrong (Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered). She later turned herself into a rat to escape an angry mob (Gingerbread) but Willow was unable to return her to her human form for three years (Smashed). Amy began to mess seriously with magic, which eventually ruined her friendship with Willow. She got her revenge on Willow by turning her into Warren (The Killer in Me).

I always thought it was cool to have a relatively unimportant character in every season. It made it feel more real: You have a couple people you have known for a rather long time who aren’t extremely dear to you but they pop up every now and then.

    2. lins11 says:

She did play an important role in Willows magic addiction…if it wasn’t for her perhaps Willow would never have gotten as bad as she did as she would never have known about Rack.

    3. Abby M. says:

But it wasn’t like she was a main character like Oz or Angel at any point. That is why she was a cool character, she was an unimportant chracter who had some major plot points connected to her.

    4. mairceridwen says:

Kind of like Jonathan before season six.

    5. Abby M. says:

      Exactly!

    6. Angel242 says:

      and Harmony.

    7. Saintsaucey says:

      and Clem and Willy

    8. Dawn says:

      I liked amy also…
it was cool that she showed up in season 4 (briefly) and then in season 6 and 7 :)

      she was cool

    9. TwoToGo-Grave says:

She was cool, but when she showed up in seasons six and seven, there was something off about her. The character from her first three episodes seemed to have been replaced by someone new, with a new personality. I know that time has passed and all, but it seemed that the writers did not remember who this character was before when they brought her back. This may have been because Drew Z. Greenberg, who wrote her first epidsode back, was not around during the years that she was there before.

    10. Dawn says:

      yeah I agree…
      she was diffrent…
It was cool to see her back but she was diffrent…
In the first few episodes when we see Amy she was also ‘new’ with magic (her mother used it in the first episode we see her, not amy) but when she comes back in season 6 she is a POWER witch and nows how to find Rack… that was weird… she was not the ’sweet’ Amy from season 1 and 2 anymore…

    11. Comfortador says:

Being a rat for 3 years has to screw you up a bit. Plus she had been going to Rack prior to the whole rat situation

    12. MagicBone says:

I liked early Amy but Amy from S6 and S7 gave me the extreme urge to beat her severely about the head and neck (to quote my friend Ellyn) with large blunt objects.

    13. TwoToGo-Grave says:

The problem with the s6 and 7 Amy is that the writers sort of seemed to forget who the character was. Her personality, which made her likeable (and who she was, for the matter) was totally different. At least that’s one opinion.

    14. Angel242 says:

Exactly, before the whole rat-thing, she was a sweet, kind of shy, well… nice person (remember season 1, The Witch)
      what happened to her?
Only because she got addicted to magic she shouldn’t have changed that much, I think.
Sure, there has to be some consequences but she was so filled with hatred in the last seasons.

    15. MagicBone says:

“Only because she got addicted to magic she shouldn’t have changed that much, I think”

Remember when Willow got addicted to magic? She got Dawn in a car accident, and erased everyone’s memories and acted like a total junkie. She was obsessed with going to Rack’s place and that was all she could think about. She was all blaah and creepy. She totally changed.

Plus, we never really saw the real Amy. She was in The Witch but it was her mom as her. In Gingerbread she was only there long enough to do some spells and turn herself into a rat. When she came back in season six, she wasn’t there a lot and a lot of time had passed and she was addicted to magicks. Her quick reappearance in season seven just clarified what we learned in season six: Amy = a pissed off bitch.

Didn’t anyone else think Amy should have been punished for what she did to Willow (all the things)?

    17. Fahoom says:

I’ve always liked her and such, but I have a notion that maybe in the episode “The Witch (one of my all time favorites, if not one of the best episodes, classic)” maybe the transfer between her and her mother didn’t suceed, and the actual Amy which we barely saw was never actual there. Maybe it’s really Catherine Madison. Nothing explains her sudden liking for magic etc. But overall, Amy or Catherine, I love seeing S1 character’s like her being mentioned and reoccured, it gives homage to Buffy in it’s best and classic years.

I must diagree with that, as the episode showed her to be a monster, and the Amy of seasons two and three is nothing of the sort. She uses magic, but not in a really bad way (she’s kind of like Willow in that; it gives them a something in common beyond eating brownies in middle school). Amy did not become vicious like this until after being brought back from rat-hood, so that must be the main reason. Actually, I’d love to have found out exactly what happened to cause her to go all evil like she did.

    19. All4Spike says:

I think she was really envious of the way Willow achived power so much more easily than she did, and resented the length of time Willow took to transform her back to human.
She makes it clear that she’d been to visit Rack before she was ratted, so she’d obviously been experimenting with the dark stuff before then, after all the ratting spell wasn’t exactly ‘light’ was it? When she used it on Buffy at school in ‘BB&B’ it was a display of power use to harm another human for personal gain, she was already on the slippery slope then.

I am so glad summer has started which means I can actually come to my favorite website…thank you Jess.

I always thought it would have been kinda interesting to find out if Amy and Catherine had switched again somehow and all the time, Amy was in the statue and Catherine was in Amy’s body. But as Two to Go pointed out, it wouldn’t have worked. I think Amy’s decend into the dark side if you will was a compliation of her jealous nature and her thirst for power.

She was her mother’s daughter and she seemed to display some attributes of jealous behavior (like in BB&B, even though Amy was under a love spell she still used magick to get back Buffy). I guess all that and the horrors of being a rat for 3 years can make anyone go bad.
